This is a brilliant read! At first I could not quite connect. I got up grabbed a hot chocolate, sat back down and I was sucked in. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This novel has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. Like I said it is going to take you by surprise and you will be hooked! Can't wait to start the next novel in this series. I think this might be by far the best novel I have read by this author - but who knows the next one might even be better! I recommend this novel and would read more novels by this author.

The concept of the plot sounded promising, the writing, just totally killed it for me. The repeating of the same concept over and over and over just grates. Did you know she can't DO things because she had to leave the school? And her 'friend' she just picks up.... is more like an angry sister forced to follow but sniping at her. Yes the snark style for friends can work, but here it feels more like they can't stand each other. Oh and did you know she can't do magic since she had to leave her school? Add writing that feels all over the place and its hard to even get into the characters. Her power is explained poorly, and she can't do any powers that are helpful since she had to leave the school before she learned. (See what I am doing... that is how it feels reading this).
All in all this book felt more like a rough outline that just never got the love it needed to make it into something whole.

The characters (main and supporting) are interesting and the story carries the reader along like an older sister would a younger brother- mindful but with purpose. I am reading the second book in this series now, and find it hard to put the book down.

This was so weird. It was like the first third of the book was written by a middle-schooler. I was shocked. Very little plot was advanced. Sentences were repeated over and over describing the same annoying reactions of the two women. I stopped reading for a while and then tried again. I really liked this author previously. About one third in the writing changed. The plot started moving and the lead characters were not so obnoxious. It started to get interesting. It eventually turned into a decent story. I am not sure what happened here but I hope it doesn’t happen again.
