5.0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to a Great Series
By DAVID A. DICKINSON on July 11, 2019
I love this series, and always look forward to the next installment of Fiction River short stories. Each one is a unique collection of tales from some of the most talented writers in the field. One thing that makes each collection unique is the fact that they're written off of a writing prompt, like you'd do in a workshop. This also makes the collection diverse, with stories running the gambit from science fiction, to fantasy, to romance and adventure.

Hard Choices doesn't disappoint, and may be the most diverse set of stories of the lot yet. Good fiction lays out moral and ethical choices, presenting hypotheticals that symbolize the best and worst in our character. Each story in Hard Choices is a fine example of this, with characters presented with difficult dilemmas. Should I seek vengeance, or rise above? Should I go down fighting, or live to fight another day? Good story telling lays out these very human choices, all with gripping, page-turning tales.

Think To Kill a Mockingbird, or early first run Star Trek at its best. Good fiction paints the moral arc of ethics that hold us together as a society. President Obama said about reading fiction: “When I think about how I understand my role as a citizen...the most important stuff I've learned I think I've learned from novels.”

And sure, sometimes, we want to just disconnect by the pool with a good book. Hard Choices has that, too. Our faves from the book where:

Tendrils by Leigh Saunders: Humans aren't the center of this universe in this sci-fi tale, but even alien life drastically different than our own can have tough choices to make.

Missiles of October by Dan Duval: Takes us back to the good old/bad old days of Cold War crises and iron lungs.

Killshot by Annie Reed: Should a combat-hardened vet get involved back in the world, or keep his distance?

Be sure to check out Hard Choices as a great introduction to the Fiction River series.
