4.0 out of 5 starsTao's story
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019
I thought I'd really dislike this due to Tao being a giant jerk in most of the other books, but it was a good read. I liked the spin on the shifter romance with Riley being a raven when most of the other books involve wolves. If you've read other books in the Phoenix series, you might remember Riley popping up recently as the pack offered to make her a permanent member along with the two children that were in her care at the lone shifter centre. Riley goes out of her way to frustrate Tao as he was a douche canoe to her when she first arrived and was resentful of her presence. He continues to rile her in order to get close to Riley, worming his way into her affections.

A lot of this book is set in Riley's flock's territory. She's invited to celebrate her uncles' anniversary and decides to attend, accompanied by Tao. While there, Riley and others are shot at leading the pack to investigate who is out for blood. Tao and Riley's relationship moved along at a good pace. There's wasn't too much back and forth which was good and Tao was actually likeable for once. I also liked Riley's character, being typical of the lead females in this author's books - strong, funny and resilient.

I took a star off this book, which I hate to do to this author because I love her work, but the drama added to this story was just ridiculous in parts. * Slight spoilers below * While Suzanne Wright's characters always have a troubled backstory, this book's was really left field. Riley hadn't returned to her pack for years because one of her best friends had had enough of being bullied one night, got a gun and shot a bunch of his peers at a party. Some of the pack, particularly his mother, blamed Riley and said she had put the idea in his head. Erm, what? Tao's parents were against Riley because his mother had been in a pack where his father had had an ex that had made her life hell, so they'd always given him the advice not to date within his pack. As a result, his mother was a giant cow. There was also trouble for the pack because a infamous drug dealer's brother was dying and he was trying to bribe and then force Taryn into healing him, resulting in him threatening Riley and Tao. This was just as ridiculous as the elements above. It was a shame because the writing and core of the story was good - this stuff was just so over the top it was crazy and added little to the story. The other reason I took a star off was because of the female protagonist in the book who was from Riley's flock. While I'm used to Wright's book having a horrible ex/female in them to create drama (which I hated in the other books as well), the villain in this book was dating Riley's ex and had slept with half of the flock so that she could flaunt to the other females that she's had their man. I hated it. I see enough of women putting each other down in life without escaping to a book to see it happen there as well. Having another woman causing trouble and spoken about like she's a slut just isn't for me, especially when these females are added purely to create relationship drama and try to make the heroine jealous as well as make the hero dribble how she's the only one he wants. I found it demeaning and catty and, to be blunt, the book is no better for it as it's too over the top and dramatic. I hate being this negative in a review, but it's a gripe I have as it's been done to death and I prefer female empowerment (which Wright also does in her stories to her credit).

The person who was targeting RIley was pretty ordinary, but I still mostly enjoyed the book. I'll continue to read this series and even though I was a little harsh in this review (sorry, Ms Wright, please forgive me. I still adore you and you're one of my favourite authors!), the positives outweighed the negatives.

On a very positive note for me, Greta didn't feature too much in this book. Don't get me wrong, she was there and had a moment where she was her typical painful self, but her character wasn't excessive like she is in other books. This was great because I find her character super repetitive, over the top and annoying - not in a cute way, but in a done to death way. I also loved the start where RIley woke up with a wicked hangover with Tao in her bed. Normally with this author's book, there's the dance beforehand where the characters skirt around each other before taking the plunge. This was a great (and funny!) change with the story starting with them both having slept together after too much tequila. No judgement here lol.

Ive liked Tao from the very first book. I think hes a great character. I even really like Riley. I think it's cool that shes a raven shifter. There hasn't been much about any other kinds of shifters so it was interesting. The story is good. Suzanne is getting better about using different words and calming some of the intense parts down a bit. She still uses a lot of the same things but I think shes getting better about it.

Here comes the part I object to. It was a super small thing but it was really irritating to me.

You know I get that people either like Trump or they dont. With it being such a big thing right now why add to the upset and bring him into a book that has literally nothing to do with politics? She could have left that out so easily. Do we not have enough upset in the world already? It wasnt necessary and all she did by it was I'm sure piss off some of her readers.

Is stating that you dont like Trump really worth upsetting some of your readers? Do you have too many readers?

Is putting her opinion about the President of the United States of America in her book so important to Suzanne Wright that she'd prefer to lose readers just to state her opinion of him? Apparently so and I find that childish. Yes it's her right to say it but at the same time if it's just spreading drama, is it really a worth it? Just because you can doesnt mean you should. What's the point? Does leaning to one side or the other really hold that much importance? If so that's really sad.

Why not give people an escape from all the drama and hate and let them forget about it for awhile as they read her books? She has a great series here and I've really liked them so far.

I personally try and stay away from the drama from BOTH sides. One of the main reason I read is to get away from it and I find its creeping into more and more books. Which makes me very sad. You cant seem to get away from it anywhere now.

I'm not saying I like the guy but by putting that in there shes stirring the drama. I dont like books that do that. It leaves a bad whatever for me about the book.

I like the characters though. Tao has been a favorite of mine throughout the Phoenix pack books and I've been reading her books like a mad women just to get to Taos book. I wont hold it against him that Suzanne used him to spread the drama. BUT I wont recommend this book either.

I never thought I'd say this about a Suzanne Wright book, but I found this one boring. I'm giving it a three instead of a two because the last part of the book was up to her usual standard.

Fierce Obsessions is about Riley, a raven shifter who has come to live with the Phoenix pack, and Tao, the head enforcer for that pack. Tao is easily the least likable or interesting character in the previous books and he doesn't really come off any better in this one. He says he's a jerk and I agree. Usually he's just obnoxious, but when change or new people are involved he becomes a jerk to say the least. He's also really boring. Being obnoxious isn't really enough to carry a main character. We meet his parents, but we don't really get into his head unless he's feeling possessive or horny. I don't feel like I got much insight into Riley either. Maybe it was in the previous book, but I don't remember why she is so devoted to Savannah and Dexter or even how or when she found them.

The main problem with this book is that most of it was boring. Usually these books are very funny and the characters are very quick witted, but not in this case. I was really looking forward to Fierce Obsessions, but it didn't have the complexities that the other books have. There wasn't any technology issues (which were cool) or the human extremist issues (also interesting) or even any tension between the characters. This book starts the morning after they've slept together for the first time. We don't know how they fell into bed when they weren't really getting along before then. While there was some discussion about how they didn't really like each other at first, we never got to see how they got close enough to fall into bed. That would have made for a much more interesting book. As it is, I feel like I started from the middle of the story.

Do I recommend this book? Only if you've read the rest of the series and want to read it. It can be easily skipped for the next book, which will hopefully be as good as the last Phoenix/Mercury pack novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love this series!

When I started reading this book I wasn’t sure what to think about a raven shifter as a heroine. When I think of a raven (the bird), I can’t really say that I find them gracious or excited or exotic. But the writer proved me wrong. She managed to convince me that a raven shifter can just be an interesting shifter character as a wolf or a cat. One of the reasons that I wanted to read this book was because I have been curious about Tao’s story. His character fascinated me from the moment that I met him in the first book of this series. Just like the other characters in the previous books, Tao’s character has more layers to it than you would think on first sight. I love discovering the main characters’ secrets, their fear, their dominance and their heart.

I really enjoyed the interaction between Riley and Tao. The way how both reacted to the other and how both tried to unbalance the other with words and action. Riley is a dominant female shape shifter but she doesn’t really react like most dominant females, she has her own special way of making people crazy. I liked that very much! Tao surprised me too in a very good way. I also liked the fact that we saw more of the children Savannah and Dexter (who we met in the previous book). They are also special in their own way and very protective of Riley. It was very cute to read about it.

The story is again told from both POV’s. It was interesting to meet a totally different kind of pack in this story, we got to see the workings of a flock (of ravens). Again the story is filled with sassy women, dominant men, steamy sex scenes and some fighting scenes.

I’m really happy that I read this book.

Tao and Riley are an unlikely pair. Riley is a raven shifter. She came to stay on pack land to help settle two lone shifter kids under her care. Tao is the bodyguard of the Alphas' son and doesn't like or trust Riley and neither does his wolf. After a night of tequila leads to sex, Tao refuses to pretend it meant nothing. When Riley is invited to a surprise party thrown by her out of state flock, Tao goes as her bodyguard and more. As threats old and new stalk them, their relationship grows deeper. Sizzling action in the bedroom and the Phoenix Pack fights to the death an enemy who dares attack them.

Suzanne Wright has a funny way of describing characters and situations. You can't help but smile as you read along...Tao and Riley have a way of talking and interacting with each other that is very amusing. The Phoenix Pack stories are all full of action and intrigue, from emotional to conniving, the storyline takes you with it. I did not want to put it down. There are several packs entwined in this book. All of which have their own story to tell. It's nice to see Wright combining forces as well as threats among them. I also like the addition of the human drug lord. Not giving much away, the hot scenes are crude but warm too! The four stars is due to the fact that I would have liked more details and resolution to Cynthia 's character...maybe in a future story?
Read it. It will not disappoint.

This has to be one of the best stories in the series yet. You have a four year old mystery that surrounds the death of several of Riley's flock and the the fact they are now trying to hurt her or her friends. If that is not exciting enough you have a drug lord trying trying to get Taryn to heal his brother. He does not take no very well. And you have Riley and Tao getting together past all their past hangup. If you like this series you will love this book.

Tao is the Head Protector of the Phoenix Pack. He is loyal, fierce, and very protective of his pack. When Riley, a raven shifter is given sanctuary in the pack's territory, he immediately dislikes her, while at the same time wants her like he has never wanted a woman.
Riley doesn't feel totally welcome on the Phoenix Pack land because she feels the vibes from Tao. But she also feels his desire for her. Confused about everything, the fact that they end up in bed together after a party could complicate things. Or it could prove the best mistake of their lives.

I loved this book, the main story was amazing and all the side characters and their continued little storylines were awesome. I cannot wait for the next book.

Another good addition to the series. I love Suzanne Wright's books!! The alpha males are possessive, protective and loving of their females and Tao was no different. Tao accepted his feelings and needs of Riley with no BS. He is as straight as they come with no beating around the bush. Once he claimed Riley there was no turning back. Not for him or her. I liked Riley's loving and protective nature, but also her ability to let unimportant things roll off her back. She adopted the two orphan shifters, a viper and a cheetah, and took her responsibilities seriously. Tao and Riley are both dominant and drove each other crazy. But it was a good crazy, one you could laugh at and move on.

Another great book in the series. Riley, a raven shifter, and Tao, the head enforcer of the Phoenix pack, hook up after his birthday party. Riley thinks it is a one-night stand but Tao knows it is more and is determined to hold onto her. As trouble finds the pack once again in the form of a performance mobster, Riley is forced to confront her past during z visit home which almost gets her killed. Suddenly, there are two enemies circling her, Tao,c and the rest of the pack. Will they be able to defeat then before it is too late?
