Sudden Death with Soccer
Verified purchase
Final Score: 6 out of 10: Above average direct to video movie starring Dave Bautista. Basically Die Hard in a football (soccer) stadium.

So onto the questions

Is it as good as Die Hard? Nope, not even close. Much as Jaws rip-off remind one how good Jaws really was most Die Hard ripoffs simply remind us how good of a film Die Hard really was. I include all the Die Hard sequels in this statement.

Is it as good as Sudden Death? Unfortunately not. For those who don’t recall 1995’s Sudden Death, it starred Jean Claude Van Damme as a local Pittsburg fireman. (No really) who tries to save the Vice President (Seriously) during game seven of the Stanley Cup (I am not making this up). The fact he has a fight against a murderous Penguin mascot alone puts it heads and shoulders above this film.

Sudden Death had a child in peril does this movie? You betcha. Lara Peake plays Danni the daughter of a former army comrade that Bautista feels guilt over as he gave the order that got her father killed. He flies in from the states to check in on the family and takes the girl out to a soccer game. She ditches him for some boys and it is his search for her that leads to him discovering our nefarious terrorists.

Does the bad guy's plan make sense? I am going to say no. They are looking for their comrade who disappeared and is wearing a disguise. They don’t want to kill him as much as kidnap him and make him lead their revolution. So they wire part of the stadium with explosives and search the stands using face recognition software. What they don’t do is simply send their guys down to the stands and just grab him when he has to take a bathroom break or get a hot dog or something. Basically, they are fishing with dynamite.

Oh, Pierce Brosnan is in this. Is he the bad guy? No, he plays the disguised comrade mentioned above. He phones it in so much I have to think Bruce Willis is running a class somewhere.

Are there any good bits? Quite a few actually. The bad guys may have a silly plan but they have a mean streak a mile wide. They love shooting people in the head for little or no reason. Martyn Ford as the muscle man bad guy is a sight to behold. He looks like he could beat up a moving truck. Lucy Gaskell plays a bike riding bad girl who honestly needs to star in her own movie.

Outside of a well above average bad guy roster the action scenes are well filmed and clearly shot and the comic relief provided by an Indian usher (Amit Shah) is often amusing.

I notice you have yet to mention the star, Dave Bautista? Yeah, he is okay. His character lacks well character. He also suffers from the fact that no matter how ridiculous he never seems to get injured or even slow down. Dude falls forty feet onto concrete and barely limps. His character makes no sense. He has tactical training but can’t figure out how to alert the authorities in a football stadium that has a live television broadcast? His female ward isn’t any better mind you. I know she is supposed to be damsel on distress bait but the script has her ditch her “uncle” at the stadium for a boy. (Which marks her as a remarkably bad person). Then when she gets alone with the boy and he tries to kiss her she gets a case of the vapors like we were in a Victorian drama. Note to screenwriter; teenage girls do kiss boys they just ran off with, That is why they run off with them.

Okay, so there are some logic problems with the characters and the plot? The stadium is full of blind people. There are gunfights, explosions, motorcycles flying above them and not one player or fan even notices the chaos. Nor do they panic when the cell phones are all cut off and all the gates are closed and locked. I mean really?
Add in some serious stormtrooper shooting by the bad guys and Dave Batista walking off getting his head smashed against a hot grill and his hand dipped in a fryer and you have too much for the ye olde suspension of belief.

So more of a science fiction picture? Well, West Ham reaching the European Cup Semi Final is practically the definition of Science Fiction.

Anything Else to add? The bad guys and honestly the movie wuss out in the end. You have a stadium filled with C4 and yet the final explosion looks like an old pensioners oxygen tank went off. Overall an enjoyable film and a nitpickers delight. Dave Bautista does need to find a character other than the guy who doesn’t get hurt when clearly he should though. He also needs a new agent. Escape Plan 3 really? Dave, did you see Escape Plan 2? You know the one you were in?

Yes it's true. Dumb criminals. Really dumb teenage daughter. A mideast British side kick that is more irritating than a butt pimple. And the hero tries to go thru the motions, but seems to just muddle through.

I only made it through 1 hour, as it ran in the background while I browsed the web. The bad guys seemed really bad, and lacked common sense. I kept hoping the teenage daughter would be caught and killed, she was pretty irritating. I kept hoping the 200 cops would get a plan. With all this can see the plot must have been written on a napkin and approved by grade schoolers. Please take this off of Amazon so other viewers can retain their sanity - it's the least you can do. Since I "watched" about an hour of it, I must now go study something hard like calculus or chess to re-add the neurons that I lost. Thanks a lot Amazon.

This is a good movie! It is 80s style action movie. No computer graphics, no political correctness, no BS. Just straight up high-octane action with great stunt work & acting all based around a fine story about a good old US Army hero who saves the day! This new guy is alright in my book. This is simply an old fashion action movie of which they don’t make much of any more. I hope to see more of this star, director and style.

You would think it’s a mindless straight to DVD actioner in the same vein as the Steven Segal junk these days. You’d be wrong. Very wrong.

Dave Bautista seems to have come into his own. Maybe it was the push from his excellent performance in the Guardians of the Galaxy series that has brought out his acting chops but he is far better than the mindless muscled up meathead he sometimes is made out to be.

All in all, the story, cinematography, action sequences, direction, pretty much everything is far superior to anything else for movies in this league. Better than even some A-grade high budget films.

Enjoyable flick. Quite the surprise actually.

All the criticisms made in other reviews are fair, I think. There's not a lot of plot to work with. It follows a fairly predictable story arc. The script is meh, but does an adequate job.
Even so, if you're in the mood for an action romp that you don't have to engage your brain to watch and enjoy watching the bad guys get their butts handed to them, grab some popcorn, settle in and enjoy the ride. Nope, it won't win any awards, but if you're in that kinda mood, it'll definitely keep you entertained and the movie is very well cast, which helps add some shine to the otherwise mundane script. Not remarkable, but solid.

When I added this one to the Watchlist I didn't even realize he was in it. This makes 9 in a row that are 5.1. I only didn't like that it isn't 16:9. But that minor complaint is overshadowed by all the action and violence. I like the shooting. I like the punching and kicking and stabbing. I like the motorcycle chase scene as far as action. When I realized that Death Force was exactly the template for what I like I used the subsequent suggestion list and added 18 movies to my Watchlist. I had already watched a couple that didn't get on the new list. I thought that after watching Death Force that no other would satisfy me but this one really hit the spot.

Not a Complete Waste of Time - But this has been done before & done better.

Overall Score: 5.5 out of 10

*The movie has some good scenes, but they have all been done before and done better.
*A really predictable story line and a waste of some good talent.
*The connections the movie tries to make between the characters is rushed and poor.
*They did make the fights a little more real, raw, & gritty compared to a lot of the 80’s movies.
*The sober instrumental tone played at key moments in the movie was a nice touch.
*The one bad girl is bland and another hyped up estrogen commando who comes across as a slow lame over hyped character that fails to deliver.
*Also on the female note, a simple kick to the groin by the 15 y/o girl to the 15’ish y/o boy would have been enough- no way her skinny butt knocks him down with one punch like that- snooze fest.
Bonus Note 1: “The 80’s Action Flicks Still Get Action Chicks….. Done Right.”
Bonus Note 1: "Has Anyone Seen the Mustard.... yes that Mustard less than 2 feet away that the Whole Audience also sees." ( I miss the 80's.....)

Personal Preference(s):

I have never been a big fan of cussing, especially when it is not done right.

But because of the fallen nature of mankind occasionally some cuss words can express the true sincere emotions of characters in movies. But it should be done minimally and tactfully, after all it is the true intentions & motives of the heart people can & want to relate with.

But for the Love of Common Sense & Good Taste please “Stop all the Unnecessary Cussing.” This can ruin the experience of any decent movie. There are plenty of other words in the English (yes other mature languages as well) Dictionary to use to express and get the same meaning across. You can capture the emotion of any scene with some nice witty witting and honestly minimal to no cussing!
