Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is a highly personal tale of an emotional journey that somehow also manages to feel universal. A snapshot of success and struggles that adds to the conversation about mental health.” -- Kirkus Reviews

“Stevenson makes herself vulnerable, and readers will appreciate her honesty, compassion, and hard-won wisdom.” -- Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Deeply affecting, heart-wrenchingly honest. This work of pure vulnerability and ultimately hope may serve as a vital lifeline for young fans in need of having their own inner struggles reflected in their heroes. An incredibly brave offering from one of comics’ most precious creators.” -- Booklist (starred review)

“Stevenson’s illustrations are sweet, simple, and confident. If the memoir feels a bit scattered at times, so does the experience of youth itself; Stevenson brings unique and endearing insight to the messy process of growing up.” -- Publishers Weekly

“[The book] is a coming-out story, a love story, a tale of disorientingly rapid professional triumph, and a story about mental health and illness.” -- The New Yorker

“The imagery Stevenson builds around mental health and burnout is so well-crafted and sincere that it should be added into the mental vocabulary of every creative human.” -- Buzzfeed

5.0 out of 5 stars Noelle is a treasure
By Samantha P. on June 27, 2020
I've been a fan of Noelle's since her Nimona comic first debuted on the internet, I took a "graphic novels as literature" class last year where we used Nimona as a point of discussion and I was pretty proud of myself for having already owned it ("chuffed" as the English would say). When she announced this book I preordered it so fast I almost hurt my hand. Noelle's memoir is a great series of drawings and life lessons, some learned the hard way, and her journey into her self discovery and acceptance was told in the best possible way. If I told you that I didn't tear up by the end (I read it all within one sitting), then I would be lying.
It now lives happily on my memoir shelf with other amazing lesbian autobiographies like Alison Bechdel and Erika Moen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! I would really recommend it to anyone, not just teens
Reviewed in Mexico on May 26, 2020
I just have read some parts but I think the book is relatable as many of the emotions and feelings described are quite there for some people like me. I like the doddle style of Noelle and I think the thoughts invested in the book are deeply explored. It's a refreshing and honest piece that talks you directly!
As for the person that said it was a "vague" take on mental illness, I don't really see how it might be vague. I think is quite fair to talk as much as you can about mental illness and no one can ask you to be more open about it, it's after all a choice you're making and it's entirely up to you to decide how much you share with others.
As a creative person who sometimes finds herself lose in doubt and in fear, this is also a good way to remind me that those feelings will no be there forever as we are always changing and it's also a good way to find a medium to express all those unpleasant feelings.
