About the author

For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Hope College and Southern Connecticut State University to work as a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.
Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother, and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.
Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.
Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published 27 novels. Eight of her historical novels have won Christy Awards for excellence in Christian Fiction: Hidden Places (2001), Candle in the Darkness (2002), Fire by Night (2003), A Proper Pursuit (2007), Until We Reach Home (2008), Though Waters Roar (2009) While We're Far Apart (2010), and Wonderland Creek (2011). She was inducted into the Christy Award Hall of Fame in 2013. Fire by Night was also one of only five inspirational fiction books chosen by Library Journal for their top picks of 2003, and All She Ever Wanted was chosen as one of the five inspirational top picks of 2005. Lynn's novel Hidden Places has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

I also understand how my mom got so caught up in her Civil War interest years ago. I was raised in the South, and would describe my family on my mom's side as "second generation Southern aristocracy". Needless to say, my sister and I were raised by black women in the southern tradition. I've been watching Ken Burns "The Civil War" PBS series along with the books and they validate her times, places and characterizations very well.
Final point: these books constantly convicted me of old thought patterns and an ungrateful attitude, that is so easy to slip into in this spoiled, rich day and age. Many times I came to tears as she paints a portrait of just how difficult African Americans had it during those years and the sickening racism that was the prevailing thought at the time. Only God's love can change hearts. I think there is real potential in Austin's writings for people to re-evaluate their own hearts in this regard.
My book club, who reads Christian fiction, chose this, and it was enjoyed by all.
I don't think it had anything to do with the way the story is written (although Phoebe's drilling exercised made me as impatient as she was for some action) in fact, the main characters are very compelling, even if I can't stand Nathaniel ever since he used Catherine's words as his own on the first book. He stroke me as weak then and after this one he's evolved to selfish and hypocrite...
See the way I felt emotions towards the characters proves just how good Lynn Austin is.
Fortunately Julia's character, who has turned into these beautiful strong woman, has seen the light at the end and chose the most interesting male character (including the ones from the first book) for herself.
Now I'm going to read the last book (and the one I'm most curious about) let's see how it turns out...

I loved how you went from a high classed lady to a poor women. The adventure they both go on is amazing. I loved the romance and drama and the history. You really felt part of the book. I also loved how they both meet but that's all I'm saying. It's really worth every penny and I'm definitely buying the last one right now

This trilogy is very different and at times harrowing as it's based on the American Civil War. The first book was based on those living in the South, this book based on the north and the third which I am now reading is on and by the slaves, definitely not a place to be.

This would make a great film!
