In the second book in The Hundredth Queen Series, Emily R. King once again follows a young warrior queen’s rise to meet her destiny in a richly imagined world of sorcery and forbidden powers.
Though the tyrant rajah she was forced to marry is dead, Kalinda’s troubles are far from over. A warlord has invaded the imperial city, and now she’s in exile. But she isn’t alone. Kalinda has the allegiance of Captain Deven Naik, her guard and beloved, imprisoned for treason and stripped of command. With the empire at war, their best hope is to find Prince Ashwin, the rajah’s son, who has promised Deven’s freedom on one condition: that Kalinda will fight and defeat three formidable opponents.
But as Kalinda’s tournament strengths are once again challenged, so too is her relationship with Deven. While Deven fears her powers, Ashwin reveres them—as well as the courageous woman who wields them. Kalinda comes to regard Ashwin as the only man who can repair a warring world and finds herself torn between her allegiance to Deven and a newly found respect for the young prince.
With both the responsibility to protect her people and the fate of those she loves weighing heavily upon her, Kalinda is forced again to compete. She must test the limits of her fire powers and her hard-won wisdom. But will that be enough to unite the empire without sacrificing all she holds dear?

Review
”King treats the readers to stunning descriptions of Kalinda and her sister warriors’ characters, even giving villains redeeming traits and hints of sympathy. A descriptive action-packed fantasy in a vivid world…” —Kirkus Reviews
“…The most poignant and important parts of this novel are the relationships that blossom and grow. If you’re a fan of The Hundredth Queen, rest assured that The Fire Queen is definitely its equal. It’s just as fascinating, heartbreaking, and exciting…” —Hypable
“A great follow-up to the series. King writes with such a vivid detail that the imagery of The Fire Queen is stunningly real. The world she created is both extremely dangerous and invitingly beautiful. You will be drawn into this world of fantasy with ease and it holds your attention till the very end.” —Fresh Fiction

Kalinda struggles with not wanting to be the Kindred, the first-ranked rani (queen) of the empire, and her duty to protect her people and empire. She wants to be free and live in peace with Deven, her guard she fell in love with. She thinks that if she can find the prince and restore him to his throne, she can have that freedom. But she finds out it won't be that easy. She has to fight in another tournament against the princesses of the other empires for the right to be the prince's first wife and Kindred. She doesn't want her throne, but she also won't let it go to someone else who doesn't care about the fate of her people. So she eventually fights to keep her throne and her rank as Kindred. She struggles to keep her Burner identity a secret from her people to keep their favor as their champion, but they were raised to hate all bhutas, and she has to fight against the princesses who are also bhutas. She has no choice but to reveal her powers in order to survive against them. Comoared to the others, she is a nobice with her newfound abilities, so she'll need every advantage she can get.
Kalinda doesn't want to marry the prince, but she comes to trust and respect him and wants to help him save their people. She knows they can do that together, so she struggles between her duty to her people and her own desires for love and happiness with Deven. He promises she will be free at the end of this, no matter what the outcome, but he hopes she will want to stay by his side as his Kindred. He sees her strength of beliefs and her love for their people, and he believes she is the key to saving their empire and fixing it after his tyrannical father twisted everything.
Kalinda starts to come into her own in this book. She learns a lot about her own abilities and how strong she can be, especially when protecting the people she loves. She has been training more with fire and with weapons and is a more confident and skilled fighter now, with daggers and with fire. She is still timid and almost afraid of her Burner abilities because they are so new and she is still learning control while keeping them a secret. But as she gets to know the nature of fire and her origins, she trusts her natural instincts and becomes more powerful. It's pretty impressive how quickly she progresses with her powers with so little training and mostly fueled by instinct and forced by circumstances.
They're now facing an even greater threat at the close of this book, but I'm not sure how they'll face it, or what will happen next. So I'm starting the third book right now...
One of the things I most enjoyed about this book was getting to see more of the bhuta powers on display. At the heart of this series is a fascinating, elemental-based magic system, and there are some really fantastic scenes in this book where that magic comes into play to create some truly stunning imagery.
It was very apparent that Emily was really enjoying herself while writing this, because despite the dire situations the characters find themselves in, there's this undercurrent of fun that runs throughout and makes the story a pleasure to read.
The plot in this book is very fast-paced and high-stakes. It perfectly transitions the story from book one into the epic finale I imagine is coming in book three. If you enjoyed the tournament elements of THE HUNDREDTH QUEEN, then you certainly won't be disappointed with THE FIRE QUEEN.
The romantic tension between Kalinda and Captain Deven Naik continues to simmer throughout this story. We even get to read through Deven's perspective through some of this novel, which not only sheds more light on the circumstances Kali and Deven find themselves in but also shows us more of Deven's character and motivations.
Another element of the story that I found highly entertaining was that we get to see more of the empire in this book, as well as individuals from many of its different regions. The setting was beautiful and exuded magic. It also added some really interesting conflicts for the characters to overcome.
So often in second books, we see main characters who become plagued by self doubt when things begin to go awry. And while there are so many different elements in this story that make Kali question her purpose and her goals, she steadfastly believes in her own strength, and I think that was the thing that I loved above all else in this story.
I am so in awe the way that Emily writes female characters. Reading these novels truly is like a lesson in sisterhood, and I cannot wait to read the next book in this beautiful series.
I was hooked from the very beginning until the end. Kalinda really starts coming into her own with her abilities in this story. She becomes more powerful. The story is told back in forth from Kalinda and Devin's point of view so you get more of a feel of more than one person's point of perspective in the story, which IMO I find more drawn into.
There are a lot of surprises in store for you when you read this. Emily King has done a fabulous job of ramping it up. As far as I'm concerned she knocked this one out of the park. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for Rogue Queen. Thanks Ms. King for sharing this one what a great ride.~A Faithful Reader

Right from the start there was drama and I was enticed straight away by it, I also love the way that different chapters are from Kali and Devens' points of view! Introducing Prince Ashwin to the series also was so interesting to compare him to his father. The other new characters and the introduction of different areas and customs was fascinating to read about and I think the world building just gets amazing in this book.
I have the third book to read already courtesy of NetGalley (thank you!) but I bought the two books before as I was intrigued.
