I used to be one of the people Nemo talks about in his book. I had no passion for my job and simply went through the motions day after day. But seven months ago I quit my day job to start my own law practice. In short, Nemo was right - it was the best decision of my career! I only wish I had this book years ago, because I know it would have helped me make the leap long before I actually did.
Nemo is a highly gifted writer and I can't wait for his next work to be published! Not only would I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to find renewed passion in their career, but also to anyone who enjoys a touching story with a brilliant delivery.
For those folks who think that their best or most productive days are behind them, or for those folks who have experienced setbacks such as physical/emotional trauma, accidents, bankruptcy, divorce, etc.....this is the book for you. Read it and get fired up to go out and live life on your own terms. As the saying goes, "If you're going to die your own death, you might as well live your own life."
What I discovered that makes Nemo different from most of these other speakers is that he is an excellent writer and a great storyteller. He spent 15 years as a newspaper reporter, talk radio producer and magazine writer. While many speakers are excellent in front of an audience, they struggle putting their ideas in print and sometimes even hire ghostwriters. Nemo tells not only the stories of others but also and more importantly his own stories.
While most of the content of this book is not new for me since I have read or heard many of the same authors and speakers as Nemo, I did learn a concept that fascinated me: Kintsugi pottery, the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery. Rather than throw the broken pot away, the Japanese would mend it with lacquer resin mixed with powdered gold. The breaking and repair is part of the history of the pot. Nemo uses the image of the repaired pot as symbol for the human condition. We have all faced challenges and to some extent have been hurt or broken. Rather than denying the pain, we need to embrace our brokenness.
John Nemo brought tears to my eyes with the telling of story of his father who died from cancer. His father had fought the disease for 10 years and as his death neared, he called a family meeting and informed everyone. John attempted to hug his father but it was not reciprocated because his father had nothing left to give. His father died nine days later.
I highly recommend this book because John Nemo is a passionate storyteller and we can all benefit from hearing his stories and insights. Nemo is not a wanna be. He is an authentic human being with a powerful story to tell.
