PreS-Gr 2—An introduction to 26 simple Hindi words arranged in the order of the English alphabet. Each word appears in Devanagari script at the top of the page, then in Roman letters, followed by a short, rhyming stanza that defines the word contextually. Each rhyme begins with the Hindi word ("A is for akaash") and then uses the English equivalent in a sentence. Both words appear in boldface. No help with pronunciation is offered, and though most words will likely not be a challenge (e.g., tara), there are trickier ones (qadam, haathi). Bright, cartoonish acrylics depict a girl and her brother. The boy rides an elephant, spins a top, and flies a kite, while the girl drinks chai, swings, and dances. Both are shown reading, celebrating Holi, and catching mangos together. The author explains in the preface that Hindi is not the only language spoken in India and that Hindi is a "living language" impacted by English, Urdu, and more. She also notes that her vocabulary selections were based on terms children in India would likely use in their everyday lives. Farida Zaman is a Toronto based illustrator, author and educator known for her upbeat, bright friendly yet sophisticated and whimsical style. She specializes in children’s picture book publishing, map art and lifestyle illustration. She has worked with clients like Latin Grammy Awards, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Out London, Swatch, WHO, Unicef , Random House, London Underground, Toronto Transit Commission and many more.
Farida’s first authored picture book is “ I Want to Be” A Gutsy Girl’s ABC was published recently in spring 2020.
She is also known for her travel art used for posters and jigsaw puzzles.
Farida's love of global culture comes from travels from her childhood, collecting beautiful objects as a great source of inspiration for her work. She uses a range of materials - watercolours, acrylic paints, gouache, and at times finishing it off on Photoshop.
She is a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York, SCBWI (Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators), and CANSCAIP (Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers)
Farida is currently an instructor at Toronto’s Avenue Road Art School and teaches fine art and illustration. She has lived and worked in Geneva, London, and New York, and now lives in Toronto.

I hate giving such a cute book a 2 star review but it doesn't really do its job. This is not a good book if you want your kid to get familiar with Hindi words. It goes from A to Z in English but uses it for Hindi words like A for akash, J for jhula, K for kadam, etc. The pictures accompanying the words are cute but not really matching the description. For example for the letter A for akash (sky), the picture is of two kids in an airplace surrounded by hot air balloons. It doesn't show much of the sky or clouds. Then there is an outright English word (X for X-mas). Um, what? This could have been so much better. It was not very well thought out and executed.

Beautiful book! But a few words are disappointing. I for Engine (Ingine - train), w for Wah (wow), and another about hail stones, which seemed a little dark and out of context to the rest of the book.

My other complaint is that it still adheres to the English alphabet letters, and not the Hindi alphabet. I understand that it is a story book format, so I could look beyond that, but it isn’t what I was hoping for. The pictures are cute. My toddler is half Indian and we are trying to build up his vocabulary. But I feel like we were cheated out of a few opportunities to learn real Hindi words, and that’s frustrating.

A fun book for kids if you want to introduce them to a bit of Indian culture and some Hindi words. A few of the words were silly, for example, I for Injen (i.e. 'engine'), way to go to confuse the English-speaking kids with their spelling with that one... particularly since it follows the Roman alphabet, not the Devanagari. Also X for Xmas, wow, I can't even bring myself to read that one. But mostly it's fun and has lovely pictures.

The illustrations are nice and unique. I like the idea of introducing hindi words in the more familiar A,B,C format as a way to introduce the language. That said, as a native speaker, I did find many of the words to be either a little archaic or random - for eg., “Kashtatarang” (=Xylophone). I get that it’s hard to find Hindi words for every letter of the English language, but having simpler and more every-day words would probably make the book more useful and interesting to little readers.

Well- this book is a blend of some good and some not-so-good. The pictures are fun and vibrant and my baby loves to look at each page, but according to my Indian in-laws and friends, the word choices are poor/inaccurate. It might be a regional thing, and that’s ok of course. That aside- I was bothered by the use of ‘X-Mas’ for the letter X. I realise that it is hard to find a word for ‘X’ but as the book took an English approach on this letter anyway, maybe using X-Ray or something else would have been better.
