Cottage Door Press is an independent publisher of high-quality children’s books. Our books are designed to spark curiosity in the littlest readers and fan the flames of lifelong learning. We understand children deserve our respect. That's why we always select artwork and stories that encourage caregivers to "read up" to their little ones––exploring interests together, learning together, and giving their young minds room to grow.

We also believe in creating stories that reflect the boundless possibilities of all children. We hope to create books that inspire little ones to connect, encourage them to dream, give them cause to celebrate, and allow them to see themselves beautifully reflected in the stories they read.

To bring these beautiful stories to life, our diverse and talented staff collaborates with authors and illustrators from all backgrounds and nationalities. We have also partnered with multicultural brands and literacy organizations to make sure our books reflect and reach as many little ones as possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very sturdy, but doesn't have pop ups on each page
By Ellie J. on January 7, 2019
My toddler was 16 months when we got this little book and she LOVED it at first! The pop ups are so sturdy which is a must for us. However, this wasn't a book we actually read together very often because she would get bored on the two page layouts that didn't have pop ups (some pages had them and some didn't). The pictures and text alone just weren't enough to captivate her. I'm still giving the book 4 stars because it's constructed really well and because it kept her happily occupied at many a restaurant during the holiday season.

1.0 out of 5 stars Christian Message Removed - Meaning of Christmas expunged from the text
By Ralph Hunt Sidway on January 12, 2022
What could have been a sweet and charming popup book presenting the birth of Jesus Christ in a simple form for Christian parents to raise their babies and toddlers with is instead a watered-down substitute for the true Christmas story, with the meaning stripped out and a disappointing ending.

The first problem is that the Virgin Birth is completely missing; Mary and Joseph are presented as an ordinary couple. Even after that, however, the central story about the birth of Jesus could still have been presented in a more complete way that honors the gospel accounts even in a simple book for babes and infants like this.

The dramatic midpoint of the book has the angels appearing to the shepherds, but their proclamation, a condensed paraphrase of Luke 2:10-14, strips out the key meaning of the event, and why they are there. The angels say merely, "We bring good news of great joy! A baby has been born to all the world!" As Linus (from 'A Charlie Brown Christmas') would hasten to correct the author, this is not just "a baby" but rather "...a Savior, who is Christ the LORD!"

From there the book leads to its conclusion, which totally misses the point, and further diminishes the meaning of the Birth of Jesus. The final 2-page spread has the wise men and shepherds arriving at the humble stable, and seeing the baby Jesus lying in the manger. After all the build-up — the wondrous signs of the star and the angels — the concluding pop-up tells us, "and he was loved." Well, yes, of course he was, but...

But this is not really the point. This book makes it seem like Jesus was a child who was wanted, even though he was born in a very humble situation, albeit surrounded by signs: angels, wise men following a star and bearing gifts. The book offers zero context for WHY the wise men follow the star, for WHY the angels appear to the shepherds with their message, for WHY the wise men and shepherds converge on the manger to see the newborn child, for WHY this is important in any way to us today.

The wise men follow the star seeking the king they ascertained to be born in Bethlehem (see Matthew, chapter 2). And, turning to Luke's gospel again we learn that the shepherds told Mary of the angels' message, and she "kept all these things in her heart" (LK 2:19), whereupon the shepherds returned to their flocks and their homes, "glorifying and praising God for all they had seen" (LK 2:20). This all could easily have been condensed to show the angels, wise men, shepherds, ox and lamb, and Mary and Joseph surrounding the Baby Jesus, with the final text, "and they all gave glory to God for His Birth!"

The "who" of Jesus Christ (king and savior, and Son of God) is the answer to the WHY questions not addressed in this book. It's sad, really, as a few extra lines (and no extra pages) are all that separate this from being a beautiful AND WORTHY Christmas treasure for Christian families.

I would warn young parents and family members to steer away from this well intentioned but muddled book, which would not help form the Christian faith in their young children. Look to other books out there from reliable Christian publishers for your first Christmas books for your babes and toddlers.
