Illustration and font choice play a huge role in children’s literature. In most children’s books, you'll find that many are filled with pictures and silly fonts that are meant to draw a child’s attention to the book. Seuss follows close to this guide with his illustrations but strays away when it comes to the font choice. It seems like He used the default font that came on whatever word-processor his publisher used. If I had to guess, this may be because the book is aimed more at the parent reading the book to the child. I believe that the simple font choice also opens up more space for the child’s imagination to run wild with the illustrations.
Being one of Seuss’ more famous books, it’s odd that there is no real theme, recurring at least, that I can find. Seuss only spends one to three pages on each set of characters and then completely turns 180 degrees to another set of characters and a whole different story line. Really, the book is made up of a lot of story segments that loosely, if at all, tie in to each other.
The tone of this work is “playful” (the best way I could think of to describe it).
“It’s fun to sing
if you sing with a Ying.
My Ying can sing
I sing high
and my Ying sings low,
and we are not too bad,
you know.” ( Seuss23)
As a kid I loved hearing this book read to me. My parents would always change their voices to the character they were reading and always put extra emphasis on the rhymes and the made-up words.

Once my husband had identified Michael Fish (ex-TV metereologist), I knew the answer was “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish”, without having the faintest idea why. It just sounded right. The answer was then given, stating that it was a Dr.Seuss book.
Then on Tuesday, at the pub quiz, we had to decipher three book titles:
1 F, 2 F, R F, B F (also S 5, and A T o 2 C)
There was that book again! I could not recall having read it, and my husband had never heard of it, so there was only one thing left to do. On Wednesday, I ordered a copy. It arrived on Friday, and now on Saturday I have read it and am writing my review.
I love it!
The illustrations are superbly fabulous, and the rhyming text anarchically silly. This is not a book to teach children about reality (it does have ‘lessons’ on counting and colours) – it is a book about the way words sound, and all the fun you can have with rhyming. Incidentally, it will help children learn to read, as they see how similar sounding words look similar too. But, for me, the pleasure of reading it, was in the way it sounded and looked.

This is a great book for any child – whether they are reading for reading yet or not. It is also fun for middle-aged non-parents!
I will be passing this lovely book on to two of our pub quiz team mates who have a one-year-old child. It is never too early to start kids on books.
My son (5) likes it too and most of the words are easy enough for him to decode without much help.
