Jan informs the reader that ‘The Love, California series is a blend of women's contemporary fiction with strong female leads, close girlfriend friendships, and romantic relationships. The women in this series are stylish, creative, and smart, but like any of us, they sometimes make mistakes. I enjoy helping them overcome their challenges.’
Jan’s writing style is as stylish as her characters an themes – the book flows smoothly through the development of the plot that allows the reader to understand the modes of operation of big business versus small business (a timely topic for a novel!) and she allows us insights into her characters that make them credible – and loveable!
Jan provides a fine synopsis – ‘Verena Valent is at the helm of her family’s legendary Swiss skincare company in Beverly Hills. After her parents’ deaths, she becomes the sole provider for her younger twin sisters and her grandmother, rising to the challenge to guide and expand her family's business. She is in the midst of a critical international expansion into Asia when her carefully organized life begins to unravel. While she struggles to save the business that means everything to her, she meets Lance, an executive chef at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She encounters this intriguing man again on a business trip to Paris, and soon gains a new perspective on life. When the unthinkable occurs and Verena’s world collapses, her friends rally around her. Ultimately, Verena learns that truth, family, friendship, and love are the unshakable pillars of life. But will she get a second chance in business, or in love? Set in Beverly Hills with action flung across the globe, this engaging series features gutsy, determined best friends, and how they manage to live the lives of their dreams.’
It is no wonder the Jan Moran is a best selling author. Her books are solid and allow insights and stances about strong women in a time when such topics are daily in the media. Grady Harp, March 17
SPOILER ALERT!! So if you are like me, in the middle of the book and wish you could skip it and go to something lighter, here is what happened: even though the bad guys don’t win, she loses the business anyway. She starts a new business at the very end with sort of a lame “out of the blue” product that falls in her lap. Yes she ends up with the good guy. The book ends with new starts all around and there is hope in her life.
Verena Valent had taken over Valent Swiss Skincare ten years ago when her parents were killed in a car crash. She brought the company to a new height while raising her twin sisters at the same time. Her Grandmother Mia had definitely helped but she had stayed out of the business unless she was asked to help. Her role was to care for the girls. Verena had just made a deal to expand into Asia and was being honored as “Executive Visionary of the Year”. Just before she went to accept, she had been told to call Marvin Panetta, her banker and friend. However, she didn’t have time. After the presentation, a news reporter wanted to know if National Western Bank would make a difference in the Asia campaign and if she was depending on Herringbone Capital and her fiancé Derrick Logan to fund the campaign. Verena ignored her comments but she knew something was wrong. Greta went on to tell her than Marvin Panetta committed suicide. What was going on? Derrick then informed her that Marvin was indeed dead and that National Western Bank would not be financing her new project. Without financing, her entire business was at risk. What was she going to do?
While she is trying to figure out what to do to save the business, she was being courted by Lance Martel, the chef at the hotel. He knows she is engaged to Derrick; but can’t seem to help himself and she is attracted to him.
What will happen to her business and to her love life?

Verena Valent has run her family’s beauty business for the past ten years, after the death of her parents. She looks after her grandmother, Mia, &, her twin teenage sisters. Both Verena & Mia, who originally set up the company with her husband, are well known in the business world & amongst their celebrity clientele. Verena has expanded the business into the opening of spas throughout America, & is on the verge of expanding into Asia when disaster strikes. With the sudden death of their friend & banker, & the looming credit crisis, Verena’s bank loan/ line of credit is rejected. She is forced to turn to her fiancé’s company, Herringbone, for help.
Derrick is a minor partner in Herringbone, a corporate venture group that is run by Thomas Roper, a business magnate, who’s well-known for his ruthlessness. Derrick was the one who pursued Verena, & later proposed to her, without a ring. Mia doesn’t like or trust Derrick, & warns Verena not to mix business with pleasure.
On the eve of receiving a recognition award for her work, Verena meets Lance, a dashing chef who runs the restaurant at the Beverley Hills Hotel. He’s enchanted by her, & cooks her a meal. Verena is attracted to Lance, but she knows nothing will come of the friendship: she’s engaged.
Despite the business struggles, Verena insists Mia takes the twins to Paris & Switzerland as planned. When Mia learns Lance will be attending a conference in Paris, she persuades Verena to go too, to meet up with an old business associate of hers, who is also in the beauty business. She then changes their hotel plans so they can stay at the same hotel as Lance, hoping to play matchmaker.
I really liked Lance, Johnny, Mia & Pierre. I liked the way the characters & best friends reacted with each other. What I didn’t like was Verena ignoring her intuition. Everything about the way Roper runs his business; how they made Verena & her company jump through hoops, even before they had confirmed they were giving her a loan. Having to work with a company that constantly changes their demands/ goalposts before the loan is confirmed would drive me mad, & I personally would think it a struggle to have a good working relationship with it, once a loan was available. If I had been Verena, I would have cut my losses. I am not sure about Scarlett: as a lawyer friend, I’m not sure if she properly explained the ins & outs of what Verena was signing. It felt, to me, that at the first sign of trouble, she implied she had warned Verena of potential problems, & went on to explain what went wrong. Couldn’t she have made it clearer before the forms were signed??? Furthermore, I felt the book finished too abruptly. I wanted more romance, more wooing by Lance. Instead I felt Verena ignored/ avoided him & then quite suddenly realised she loved him & he was the one for her.
I Voluntarily Reviewed a Copy of This Book.
Big business is ruthless and an inexperienced young businesswoman who puts her trust in people is torn apart by losing the family company.
I have had to mark it down in the star rating due to a mistake. When the grandmother becomes ill the twins are spending the night at a friend’s house but as the sun is streaming in through the windows, therefore very early morning, when the twins find the grandmother in distress in her bedroom and call for help. How did they get home that early?
