What happens when you mix a divorce attorney and a matchmaker? Arranged marriages were once the only way to go and Lori and Sam provide a service, that is legal and practical. A man needs a wife for his career or to appease a dying mother's wish to be married and a woman is more than willing to play the part for a set amount of time, with the prenup (executed by Lori) ensuring that both parties get what they intended and no more - unless of course they decide not to dissolve the marriage. After a tragic end to one marriage, Lori decides a cruise is in order with the widow and two other women, recently divorced, to get away and provide mutual support. Thus, the First Wive's Club is created. Enjoy the cruise, with no stress. That's not quite what happens. Sophisticated women with money, in the most lavish accommodations? Possible targets for every Tom and Harry (and a woman who provides advise from afar and is unknown until the very end). Not to mention a PI whose initial motives and focus is not clear, but who falls for Lori. It soon becomes clear that one of the women is in danger.

A little unconventional, this was a fun and interesting read. The women's personalities are very different, each with a well-developed voice. The friendship among the women is wonderful and even Lori's cynicism and mother hen actions are on target. It is well-written and the characters introduced in the context of a cruise and singles mixers. There is humor, mystery, romance and suspense along with some content falls in the "adult" category. This is the first in the First Wives Series (and my first by Catherine Bybee. I'll be reading more by this author for sure.

Fool Me Once is the first book in the First Wives Series. This series is a spin-off of the Weekday Brides Series. Lori is the divorce attorney that Alliance employed. Three side characters in this book are all former Alliance Brides, one divorced years ago, one just divorced and one unexpectedly recently widowed. They go on a cruise together to bond and to help all the women adjusting to their life after marriage. This can be read as a stand-alone book, but a lot of the plotline is based on the seven book Weekday Brides Series.

Lori has dedicated her life to her job as a divorce attorney. Alliance, a company that pairs couples in a temporary marriage where one party has a need met, and the other party has a prenuptial agreement for the time of divorce, a financial payment and any other perks that might be allowed (like a home), is her main client. She is taking three women on a cruise ship who are having trouble adapting to their new circumstances. Shannon was the temporary bride of the governor of California before he got elected. She fell in love with her ex and is having trouble moving on, even after three years. Avery is just divorced and plans to enjoy her new freedom, new wealth that isn't dependent on her parents and all the men. Trina didn't get to the divorce part of her Alliance contract before her husband committed suicide. Now she has lots of new problems to deal with. They plan to help and support each other while they enjoy some sunshine.

Reed is an ex-cop and current private investigator. His client had interest in this Alliance group. So he "accidentally" meets Lori at the cruise ship bar. Her nature isn't to trust men, but Lori is comfortable with Reed and the more time she spends with him the more she likes him. Reed begins to fall for Lori also, but he has a paying client to satisfy and a web of lies to untangle without breaking her trust...a pretty impossible goal. Will they be able to work it out as the truth comes out?

This is a really easy read if you don’t mind a slightly cheesy story. I got carried away with it. It is basically about a divorce lawyer who specialises in arranged marriages for the rich and famous and it is for a short period of time, the ladies entering into this arrangement sign a prenup and they act as arm candy and leave the short term marriage with a huge bonus. The lawyer gains a hefty pay check too. All goes well until one of the marriages does not go to plan, then it gets interesting.

I have read the previous books and enjoyed them. However I really disliked this book, I found most of the characters in this book unlikeable, this includes the previous characters. The lawyer and her friends came off as greedy women, only out to make as much money as they could. The book focuses more on what the agency stands for which is lying and deceiving people. Unfortunately, even Sam who I have previously liked came out as greedy, out for the money and who would do anything even if illegal.
