The book started well enough, and there was some excitement. Then it bogged down a little, but it was still okay reading about the protagonist learning to survive in a world with different ideas than she'd grown up to have. I couldn't finish it, though. It descended into a sexual free-for-all that I didn't want to read. You can only skip so much before you realize it isn't worth it. I won't read more of this series, but I may try later books, if I can find one that doesn't become more porn than sci-fi. I think he writes well enough, but this missed the mark entirely as military sci-fi.
Got this book because I've enjoyed some of his later work. At first glance, 'Yay! A nice thick book to read.' After forcing myself to keep reading for 284 pages, 'Is this ever going to get started?' Then it got even more boring. Couldn't finish.
If reading about what an author considers the 'best' society, i.e. 'best gov't. is none'; public sex is wonderful, should be encouraged, is way better w/o 'protective barriers', & group sex is even better; adolescent gangs enjoy cleaning up graffiti; everyone should carry firearms openly; etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum ...... then this book is for you.
If it have had a plot line, other than poor little Earth female is totally inadequate to live anywhere else until properly indoctrinated, it might have been bearable to read.
Having grown up in a didactically controlled society where crime is allowed to run amok, but performing CPR on someone in an emergency can lead to your arrest, she is shocked by the freely open society of the Freehold. As she learns to adapt, and come to call this new world home, she finds comfort is joining the Freehold military. Having passed a rigourous training course that hold all trainees to the same standard, she slowly realizes just how limited the UN and Earth was. And as she's settling in to a new career on this new world, she has to make the hardest decision of her life.

A freehold series? will be interesting to see as this is very complete in itself.
Grumbles? Well some might find the political and social commentry a bit too much, but at the end of the day it does give a bit more to ponder about . . . but it is a bit extreme and very much it seems based on the US political system and financial idealology, but it doesn't detract from the story
Would I read more . . . mmm that'll be a yes then

I'm not going to go through the story, it's too good for me to want to do that to you. It's gripping, has excellent narrative, great storyline and depth of character. They aren't two-dimensional characters.
Read it. You won't be sorry.
