RESISTANCE IS BRUTAL!
When the UN invaded the Freehold of Grainne, the intent was simple: force a noncompliant star nation back into the collective. What the politicians hadn’t accounted for was that the Freehold had spent 200 years as the haven for every independent, rebellious, self-reliant adventurer in human space.
Its military are scattered remnants, its bases smoking ruins, its cities occupied. But Grainne and its space habitats have resources beyond measure. Retired intelligence agents, disabled veterans, animal handlers, petty smugglers, half-lame computer specialists, research scientists, planetary engineers—all have one goal in mind: make the invaders suffer for their presumption. That’s the Freehold way.
RESIST. ADAPT. EMERGE VICTORIOUS.
A collection of hard-hitting tales gathered by series creator Michael Z. Williamson.

I'm a biology major, an IT geek with a MS in Information Security & Assurance, SF/F fan, personal finance nerd, nutrition / health geek, and mother to an adorable little girl and her baby brother, who is a devoted disciple of Chaos. My husband is a science fiction author, mostly published with Baen Books, and several of my acquaintances are long time SF/F fans, authors, and/or artists.
My first short stories and poems published for general view were posted to VideoTel, when I was 8. A quarter century later, the voices in my head still insist I write, although I don't produce much poetry these days. My original fiction is typically fantasy with a side order of science fiction. However, I also enjoy dabbling in what-ifs for classic novels, such as Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice.
A native Texan by birth (if not geography), Chris moved 'home' as soon as he could.
Attending Texas A+M for two of the four years he lived in College Station, he learned quickly that there was more to college than drinking beer and going to football games.
Deciding that a change of venue may be more beneficial, he moved to San Antonio, attending SAC and UTSA, graduating in late 2000 with a BA in Lit.
While there, he also met a wonderful lady that somehow found him to be funny, charming, and worth marrying. (She has since changed her mind on the funny and charming, but figures he's still a keeper.)
After the birth of his first child, and while waiting on the second, Chris decided that he should start his own business, and has been running it since 2001.
In a fit of creative inspiration, Chris began writing flash fiction in 2012, moved on to short stories, and should be finishing his first solo novel any day now. His first story, 'Bad Blood and Old Silver,' appears in the 'Luna's Children:Stranger Worlds' anthology, from Dark Oak Press. Other stories to be released: 'What manner of Fool,' featured in Michael Hanson's 'Sha'daa: Inked' anthology; 'Isaac Crane and the Ancient Hunger' in Fantom Enterprise's 'Dark Corners' anthology; and '150 Miles to Huntsville' in Baen's Black Tide Rising anthology. He has also co-authored (with Jason Cordova) 'Kraken Mare' from Severed Press.
His two cats allow him, his wife, their three kids, and two dogs to reside outside of San Antonio.
Philip Wohlrab has been a medic with the Army for over 16 years, and he has served his time in the sandbox. He earned the title "Doc" the hard way. He did a brief stint with the United States Coast Guard, where he did SAR, and formed an appreciation for all things nautical. He currently works as a professional war-gamer and analyst for a defense contractor in the DC area, and still serves in the National Guard. He can also be found at various Sci-Fi cons around the country.
Mike Massa has lived an adventurous life including stints as a university researcher, a tech entrepreneur, an investment banker and a U.S. Navy officer (1130). In addition to the usual military deployments, he has lived outside the US for several years as a civilian, mostly in South America and Europe. Newly published, Mike is married and enjoys the challenges of three sons and a growing cohort of grandsons all of whom check daily to see if today is the day they can pull down the old lion. Marisa Wolf was born in New England, and raised on Boston sports teams, Star Wars, Star Trek, and the longest books in the library (usually fantasy). Over the years she majored in English in part to get credits for reading (this...only partly worked), taught middle school, was headbutted by an alligator, built a career in education, earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and finally decided to finish all those half-started stories in her head.
She’s currently based in Texas, but has moved into an RV with her husband and their two ridiculous rescue dogs, and it's anyone's guess where in the country she is at any given moment. Learn more at www.marisawolf.net
Justin grew up an Army brat, living in Germany, Alabama, Texas, Korea, Colorado and Alaska, and fed on a steady diet of X-Men, Star Trek, Robert Heinlein, DragonLance, and Babylon 5. While attending West Point, he met his future wife, Michele, on an airplane, and soon began writing in earnest with her encouragement. In 2005 he graduated from West Point and served as a field artillery officer, completing combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and earning the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge.
Medically retired from the Army in 2015, Justin settled in Houston with Michele, their four children and an excessively friendly Old English Sheepdog.
Robert E. Hampson, PhD, is a Neuroscientist and author. By day, he is a professor at Wake Forest School of Medicine, studying how our brains encode memory. By night, he writes military, adventure and hard-science Science Fiction as well as nonfiction articles explaining science to the general public.
Robert's SF writing career began with several pieces of short fiction published in 2015. He now has three collaborative novels in the Four Horsemen Universe (Seventh Seal Press) and two solo novels—one forthcoming in 2023 from Baen Books. He has co-edited two anthologies, published more than 25 works of short fiction.
Dr. Hampson's scientific career has concentrated on understanding the effect of drugs, disease, and injury on human memory. As lead scientist for Braingrade, Inc., he is helping to develop a medical device to restore human memory function. He is a teacher, researcher, reviewer, scientific journal editor, and consultant. His website is http://REHampson.com.
Hey, I'm Jamie. Thanks for checking out my page.
I'm Canadian, born and raised in Ontario, spent some time in the CF reserves, and went on a peacekeeping mission when I finished highschool. Moved to the left coast to work in law enforcement, and retired in early 2021. Now I live in the Maritimes, and write full time. I'm married to the lovely Michelle, and we have cats.

A.C. Haskins is a former Armored Cavalry Officer and combat veteran, turned economist and business strategist (and occasional firearm instructor). He has a lifelong love of speculative fiction, having written his first science fiction novel as a class project in the eleventh grade. The book is a series of short stories by Larry Correia, Michael Z. Williamson, Brad R. Torgersen, Mike Massa, Kacey Ezell, etc with the stories split apart into segments on the timeline that Freehold is invaded by the UN of Earth. Set about 500 years in the future, the story of the second invasion of Freehold by the UN of Earth is quite bloody. Note, what comes around is fair game and several nuclear weapons are detonated on Earth during this book.
In the Freehold universe Freehold is a former Earth colony in a future where the UN and its sensibilities have become the ruling government of Earth. Freehold is quite the opposite, being solidly libertarian in it's governance and outlook.
The UN (i.e. Earth) decides that is too free and hurtful and invades to bring its colony back into the fold. While those events are covered in the previous Freehold books enough is told in this volume that a new reader can start right away with Resistance. Bottom line: This planet has a lot of liberty. The UN wants to make it behave. Freehold is populated with very sneaky deadly people who will fight to regain their freedoms. And then the hijinks start.
The individual stories are interwoven between each other along a timeline that is shepherded by three main narratives - the hacker white hat/black hat community, a logistics manufactory ship in deep space, and the diary of the UN force commanding General. Some of the other stories, such as the skywheel operator working to redirect supplies as well as the smugglers co-opted to work for the UN are in multiple parts and are spread out to match the timeline. That is fun because it provides a kaleidoscopic view of the facets this war goes through without being sucked down for too long in one area.
I'm not going to go into the individual stories. Other reviews have done better. There is such a variety to the stories to enjoy: personal courage exhibited by the skywheel operator, the frustration of the UN general who is fighting both the Freeholders and the lickspittle bureaucrats and contractors from the UN, the worries and wearying coordination required by the leader of the hackers, the final heroism of an uncle passing the torch to his nephew who thinks him a coward, the pissed-off anger of assassins guild members when the UN puts them out of business, or......the hunt of military leopards. Who doesn't like big killer cats?
This book is as much stories of an invented universe as it is a way of informing folks there are a variety of ways to deal with rude houseguests. I think Martha Stewart (aka NYBOP inmate 55170-054) would approve.
Limiting this book to five stars exposes the low expectations of people who create such rating platforms.
I am therefore giving this book 8 stars. By pure coincidence, I am the sole and uncontested authority of this review and cannot be outranked by a mere 5-star-capable computer programmer who isn’t me.
And here are the facts:
1) People who write reviews of books they have not read should be tossed into open space completely naked but enclosed in a giant, insulated, heated Ziploc baggie that by design fully protects them unless they open it. Lock them in that baggie with only an oral pacifier you find in the mouth of an infant and a worn stuffed animal, pink in color, purchased from the local resale shop. Give them enough oxygen to match the amount of time it would take to read the book and also place the book in there with a battery powered light to give them something to do until they suffocate to death or choose a well deserved vacuum, either of which is inevitable but ideal.
b. This book proves the valid and reasonable necessity of bringing back dueling to settle disputes that qualify enough to stake what matters on a resolution. First 3 stars are right there.
iii: This book proves beyond any discernible measure of micro-doubt that only a complete jackäss would willingly choose to be helpless and unarmed. And only an ignorant dümbshît believes the government is here to help you. Two more stars right there. So we’ve already hit the ceiling of the programmers who say five stars is the maximum.
Guns, freedom, rights, courage, valor, risking it all for the right reasons and standing firmly in what means everything is why to devour this book and give it as a gift to all teenagers.
A novelist turned editor who is able to manage the production of world class short stories from established writers into a cohesive, unified novel has now allowed other writers to help advance a fictional universe and timeline he created: The Freehold. Michael Z. Williamson is vying for Heinlein status in THIS universe.
And if the Freehold universe is not the universe you would sell everything you have to relocate to, you don’t deserve the Freehold’s promise and should piss off right now and secretly be soaked in Reaper scent.
Grok that and read this one.
