I have really loved this series, but it may be time to put it to rest. This one seems to have been phoned in, using gimmicks from earlier books to try to make it fit in the series. Exploding purse? Check. Fortune being startled out of bed and grabbing her gun? Check. Gertie wearing something outlandish? Check. Race for banana pudding? Check. Ida Mae fretting about getting her SUV dirty? Check. Bizarre happening leading to a worse crime? Check. Celia showing her bloomers? Check. Lots of local small-town Louisiana color? Uh... no, and that's where this one falls way short of the other books. This book could have been set in almost any small town near a major city, with three random characters as the lead. It felt tired, contrived, and like it was written just to produce another book in the series. If there's yet another one planned, I hope the author spends a little more time on plot and character development and less time on plodding conversations.

Once again I would like to suggest that this author go back to the first two or three books since those are what brings readers in and keeps them going.

This one and the last two, are nothing like the first one. There is little to NO action. Too much conversation. Not what made me want to continue the series.

Thus this is probably the last one by this author that I will pay to read. Too bad.

This is my least favorite book in the series. It feels in places like someone else wrote it. It wasn’t humorous; therefore I didn’t get to laugh (I needed those laughs). Her stories usually had good storylines, but this one was like she ran out of ideas and made a convoluted one from an old book. She didn’t use God’s name in vain or Biblical references nearly as much which was a wonderful thing (I have issues with not finishing a series; it’s like I’m going to miss something important). I did want to stop reading due to the usage of this and probably should have since they weren’t necessary to begin with. I had problems connecting with the characters in this book wherein I didn’t in the past 19 books. The book didn’t flow and the characters were harsher and more unlikeable.

SPOILERS ALERT: *I found it distasteful the way they thought of Gil’s wife, Tiffany. There didn’t seem to be any true feelings for the things she endured as a teenager. *I also didn’t like that she just called Manny and asked him to do a search on this or that person. What happened to Big & Little? They were a delightful addition to the story. *Carter seemed to be always stressed and he didn’t figure anything out on his own, really! *Even the roles she had the free main characters play was different somehow.
This book shouldn’t have existed; she should have stopped with 19. If she writes any additional books my suggestions are: Stop using God’s name and Biblical references; they aren’t necessarily and you offend some readers. Go back to some of your earlier books I really enjoyed some more than some later ones. Don’t make Gertie and Ida Bell equal with Fortune; Gertie’s mishaps are one of the things that add humor. Ida Belle’s take on her best friends made me smile. Don’t be ridiculous with events (The lawyers office event was just stupid and utterly unbelievable).

The series: the Fortune series as a whole is a delightful funny mystery series. You meet characters who are wonderfully loyal, direct, intelligent and a pure mess. They captivate you to want to read the entire book/series and invite them into your heart.

When I first read the blurb, I though this would be like the last Halloween Book. Not so. This is a fun time adventure with Fortune, Ida Belle and Gertie; and, with Carter trying to keep all three out of trouble. You can only guess how well that works out for him.

When a dead horseman shows up at the Halloween Festival, and dumps his head into Gerties' hands--this is the beginning of an investigation with a lot of twists and turns, that takes them from Sinful to New Orleans. Jana Deleon had me again laughing out loud at the antics of the three, and kept me guessing until the end of the book as to "who done it"? A wonderful read. I highly recommend.

I love it when a new book comes out, because I get to take a trip back to Sinful, Louisiana. The characters are hilarious and get up to the best shenanigans. I loved this addition to the series, and The numerous mysteries wrapped up within the main mystery. I love it when people mess with Celia. Also enjoy it when Fortune figures out just a little bit more than everybody else. I feel sorry for Carter though he really does bring it on himself a little bit. Really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one. Wonder if there will be more skunk shenanigans and inadvertant glitter bombs? Stand alone, though better if you've read the entire series. Helps you know who everyone is and their place in the story. Told from Fortune's POV. Highly recommend.

I love Jana's Fortune books, they are well written, unique and the interaction between characters is always interesting. Unlike some of the other reviews, I enjoy the antics of the 3 ladies, and if Gertie's purse doesn't explode I am disappointed. My only complaint about this particular book is that I like a little interaction with the Heberts in each book, and of course Manny. I also missed Walter and Ally, in earlier books they were actually involved in some of the action, not just bystanders or mentioned but not participating. Considering the trying year for all of us, and in particular for Jana herself, I was very surprised to have a new release so soon this year, and appreciative of Jana's efforts to give us a fun read. I hope we get one more entry before 2021 ends, a Christmas themed book would be nice. This is not my favorite book in the series, and some parts of the plot were a little too much like a previous book, so I gave it 4 stars rather than 5. But I did enjoy it and Jana stayed true to the characters that were active in this installment in the series.

Anther Fortune story and it is very well put together and as always has a twist in the tale that you never see coming. Unfortunately, as in the last couple of books much of the humour of the earlier books has disappeared and the girls are getting into less and less situations . Aside from this it is still a good tale and l await the next instalment eagerly.
I know that writing takes an awful lot of time but l did wonder if there was ever going to be more about the inhabitants of Mudbug which just seemed to end without any apparent reason. Having a crossover with Fortune and Helena being able to see each other would be great.

Fortune, IdaBelle and Gertie are amazing characters and the supporting cast from Deputy Carter LeBeau, his uncle Walter, Mannie their mob friend, Francine the cafe owner even Celia their town nemesis, to name but a few. All go towards making books that are a joy to read. This book, (while not as funny as some in the past) has a very complex plot that will keep you guessing right till the end. The highlight of my year is when I see another instalment in this series up for sale, long may Ms DeLeon keep writing them.
