The Definitive Guide to Doing Business with the Government
Winning a Government contract can be incredibly lucrative for a small business but responding to Government Requests for Proposals can leave you feeling frustrated, confused, and overwhelmed due its level of complexity.
The Government is the biggest buyer of goods and services in the world. But did you know that many Government Contracts are won way before they are ever published?
Author, Monica Rubombora, brings over two decades of an insider’s view of the Government Contracting business. She has served as a Deputy Director General in the South African Civil Service and a Managing Director in the Public Sector business of Accenture. Today she runs her own business and technology consulting company, with Government as an anchor client.
Based on her deep understanding of the challenges that face many small businesses, Rubombora wrote this book to help small businesses navigate these complexities so they can win more government contracts.
Government Tenders Don’t Suck! is a no-nonsense playbook for the overwhelmed small business owner who wants to navigate the complicated government tendering process and win.
The book is a comprehensive guide for business development and Request for Proposal or RFP. It has been designed to help you—the “little gal and guy” to:
- Avoid common pitfalls and make the most of your business understanding, skills, and experience to win profitable Government Contracts
- Compete for business through structured and meaningful written responses to solicitations from potential government clients.
- Figure out how to respond to government tenders without losing your mind, even when your resources are constrained, or you have few prior assets that can demonstrate a successful track record
- Manage tender response operations on shoestring budgets through time-saving tools and templates you can rinse and reuse

A definite winner and one book you must read if you are a business owner!

This book is very easy to read, which is a pleasure in the overwhelm of stodgy books about government. And it’s not only about how to make government tenders work for you, but it's also full of encouragement. The author gets it: the going through the roof with frustration, the insecurity, the temptation to give up. It’s full of personal experiences and practical advice, cut-to-the-chase techniques.
As the author promises in her introduction, this book takes the trial and error out of the application process – it puts the fight back into you and gives you every chance of success.
Divided into 6 component parts with a total of 34 chapters, the book takes business owners from identifying their purpose and unique value or selling point(s), through knowing and developing long-term trustful relationships with clients, responding to and managing requests for proposals (RFPs) as projects, strategies for overcoming the incumbent and avoiding the pitfalls of incumbency, along with priceless tips for the actual writing, presentation and packaging of the proposal itself to overcome the competition.
Through the annals of this book, Monica Rubombora has shared her decades of experience on both sides of the isle, initially on the government side of awarding and evaluating tenders, and later on the other side as a corporate executive, and now a business owner doing business with government, to lay bare the challenges and pitfalls in the tendering process for small businesses but also the opportunities for making real and impactful change in people's lives by doing business with government.
The fact that we live in a globalized world means that the nuggets of wisdom shared in this great book of easy read should become an invaluable resource for all businesses around the globe because they can be adapted to suit the cultural nuances and the political climate of the target government agency and country.
Key components of this book which make it stand out include the Lessons from the Trail that summarize the key points in each section, the one page power map, the police-stamped affidavit as part of the proposal, and the discussion on bribery and corruption in the government tendering process which has attracted global attention.
In the last chapter of the book, Monica "Wraps it all Up" by describing the book as a "no-nonsense playbook for the overwhelmed small business hustler who wants to navigate through the complex government tendering process and win."
After reading through this book, I have to agree with and thank the author, Monica Rubombora, for achieving her goal and more. The included free book resources library of templates and others for developing wining proposals and growing one's business and the offer of a free 15-minute BREAKTHROUGH STRATEGY CALL/CONSULTATION are added reasons to buy this book.
The book covers key topics that will equip small businesses with insights to be successful, such as top strategies, understanding the client and their organizational influences, structuring an offer, and even tips on qualifying opportunities… the best of which is how and when to walk away.
A very valuable part of the book includes a detailed description for structuring and writing a winning proposal in response to a government request for proposal.
