In GROW: How We Get Food from Our Garden, a child and grandfather work on the farm planting, growing, and harvesting various crops and produce. Through colorful images a child gets to see so many types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. As well as various animals found on a farm. I believe a young child will enjoy the pages where some of the foods are shown halved and they can see inside.

A child will have fun with this book, not only for the fun images and learning about what they can find on a farm, but the way the words are used.

They will learn words for the foods in a fun way, through rhymes. Through the rhymes they learn poetry and alliteration while discovering different ways some words can sound than they might know already.

This should definitely be in the home, classroom or library.

Strange Illustrations and Words with Little Storytelling Context

I love the idea of a book focusing on a grandparent and grandchild farming fruits and vegetables together. However, this book was simply odd. First, I didn't think the illustrations of the people were that good. They looked more bizarre than realistic. The best part of the illustrations was the fruits and vegetables, and frankly, I wished there were more of them. The text, too, was strange. Rather than coherent sentences, the author wrote mostly in words, whether verbs to describe what might be going on in the garden at different points of the plant-growing cycle or nouns of different fruit, vegetable, and nut names. But they were given with little storytelling context. It felt like random words given because they were similar rather than they were telling a story of how we get food from home gardens. All in all, I was not wild about this book. I like the concept, but it needs to be better realized.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

This look at growing, nurturing, and harvesting a garden has something for everyone. As a teacher/ librarian I can see using this book in a series of lessons and settings.
With delightful rhyme and alliteration, the author not only writes about growing a kaleidoscope of colorful foods in our garden, but he puts delicious words in our mouths worth savoring and discovering. Fun book to 'plant' in your library 'garden'...and watch young minds 'grow!'

What a fun and creative way to introduce children to gardening. I especially enjoyed the delightful rhyming throughout. The detailed discussions of the origins and development of food growth and harvesting is well documented and enticingly illustrated. The use of intergenerational gardening activity is heart warming. The extensive lists of various food types is instructional. A must for the many children who have no opportunity to garden.

This book has cute illustrations , but that’s about it. If you are looking for a good book to explain gardening to kids, this is not it. It uses gardening words with no explanation or definition. Kids have no idea what grafting is. It mentions terms with nothing else. Sure it rhymes, but so what? If you are looking for something to help introduce kids to gardening keep looking!
