When John Gilstrap's first novel, Nathan's Run, hit the market in 1996, it set the literary world on fire. Publication rights sold in 23 countries, the movie rights were scooped up at auction by Warner Brothers, and John changed professions. A safety engineer by training and education, he specialized in explosives and hazardous materials, and also served 15 years in the fire and rescue service, rising to the rank of lieutenant.

That "first" book was really his fourth, and that one call from an agent (after logging 27 rejections) changed the trajectory of his life. Twenty books and seven movie projects later, it's been a good run, and it's still running. But his career track looks more like a sine curve than a rocket ship. There were lots of setbacks along the way. At one point, his writing career appeared to be dead. Then came the comeback.

John's presentation, "Dare to Dream", tells the story of triumph, disappointment, despair and finally some long-lasting success.

John has spoken at events across the country, most recently at the Pike's Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs, and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers in Denver. In February, he will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the California Association of Teachers of English in Los Angeles. His YouTube channel, "A Writer's View of Writing and Publishing" has over 1,700 subscribers and more are coming aboard every day.

Outside of his writing life, John is a renowned safety expert with extensive knowledge of explosives, hazardous materials, and fire behavior. John lives in Fairfax, VA.

However, getting tired of writers using inappropriate words during the telling of story... using the word "EDGE" for example, to describe slow movement is just plain wrong; I sit on the edge of my seat, I cut my grass to the edge of my property, I DO NOT "EDGE" up to something. I'll creep, sidle, crawl, even "inch" up to something. "Pull", is another mis-used word in my opinion, writers using it to describe taking a drink.. I pull my car out of the garage, pull money out of my pocket, I have never heard anyone sat "pull on a drink" - sip, savor, chug, guzzle, absolutely

I have been devouring John Gilstrap's books since I first discovered his Jonathon Graves series. End Game was certainly no disappointment. This series just get better and better. The characters are so well developed that their personas both as individuals and as a well functioning team bring the reader into their hearth and home. I know these people, I like these people, I want to keep visiting these people and for sure they are the Christmas card list! To me that is one of the greatest things that can be said of an author. Mr. Gilstrap has taken the fragments of his imagination and created this whole likable team.

The action is non-stop and each book has teaching elements of history, of weaponry, of strategy and the list goes on. End Game set Jonathon Graves team up to take a fall. Saving the PCs in this mission was a constant game of who is on first, who is on second...who is the good guy, who is the bad guy...they kept changing hats.

It's another winner which is great....the bad news is that I think I might be out of luck for that next installment. I'm on my way to check...if my luck has run out I will be impatiently patiently waiting for the next one.

I liked the story. I enjoy the interaction between the Jonathan, his staff and the priest. I could do without out all the explainations about the different types of weapons. There is a lot of violence but it does fit in with the story. If you are uncomfortable with lots of killing, this book may not be for you. No sex and some bad language that is appropriate to the story.

John Gilstrap writes with such realism you feel your in a 3-D movie, rather than reading novel. I've had difficulty finding thrillers lately that don't jar me out of the story with blatant errors, overblown description, and static dialogue. But, so far, not with this author. Mr Gilstrap knows his subject matter to the nth degree, and creates the suspense, danger, and surprises that readers of his genre crave. His characters are well-drawn, but with enough left out for the reader to become engaged with them, imagine them fully, and accept them as real. His knowledge of the tools of the uber soldier trade is remarkable. Most writers don't know, nor understand, the ordnance they write about. Many think a magazine is a monthly periodical, and a clip is something you use to reclose a potato chip bag. Take it from me, a former Marine, Gilstrap knows his stuff. He's the real deal.

I'll be reading more of his work. I'm betting I won't be disappointed.

End Game finds John Gilstrap back to his usual top-notch thriller writing. After the ludicrous previous installment in the series, I was afraid that the character and author needed to take a long vacation from each other, so I'm glad that this book was as good as most of the first four books. The plot moves along well and there are plenty of twists. One of the differences in this novel compared to earlier works by Gistrap is that the protagonist, Jonathan Graves, doesn't actually meet either of his rescue targets until the final 50 or so pages. Usually Boxers, Graves, and the POI's interact more than they do here. It was OK to not have that usual bonding time here, and instead have a new potentially major character get a fair share of page time.

Worth reading. Lots of fun, and I'm eager for the next book.

"End Game" is a great thriller in the Digger Grave series by John Gilstrap, except for one reservation that I will get to later. A teen boy, innocently dragged into a deadly chase after nuclear codes, protected only by a young woman who has some excellent combat training. Another woman from the FBI recruits Digger to go after them, but there are others involved as well. Much of the "fun" comes from figuring out who is who, since the why is made clear early on. One of the two women has an agenda that is not wholly consistent with Digger's -- I won't say which, but this is an easy one -- and I was not really happy with how Mr. Gilstrap dealt with this. The easy solution was never seriously considered, IMHO. Finally, there are scenes of torture that are a bit much, though they do make sense.

The Digger Grave series is one of my favorites, and this latest story is among its best.

The action moved along quite well and the plot structure was neatly woven together. The one part I did not like or took some time getting used to is the shift in scenes without a chapter break of sorts. For example, frequently the author would move the scene from one location to another without any kind of break. It would cause me to have to return to the previous sentence or two to make sure I had not missed something. Now, whether this method was a unique style of weaving the action together or not, a page break or chapter break between "scenes" would have assisted me in keeping the action in order.

Good but not as good as previous ones

I don't regret the purchase, by any means, but so much of the book took place out of sight of the lead characters that I felt like the leads were being used as peripherals to set up a new series. I mostly read this series to see Dig and Boxers in action, and that was almost non-existent in this one. The one bit of suspense was caused by one lead character neglecting to mention something that there was no way he'd have neglected to mention, leaving his partner completely and unnecessarily distracted at the worst time. I didn't buy that as realistic. Still love these characters. Hope the new one doesn't hang around & that the next in the series gets back to basics - two guys opening up multiple cans of whoop-ass on the bad guys and saving the world, one pc at a time.
