Blog postWhen I write novels, I tend to create a playlist for each book. I don't necessarily listen to the songs while I'm writing because lyrics can be distracting, but I like to have songs that fit the book in question. In the past, I've kept those mostly to myself. I've talked about songs inspiring fiction on a few convention panels, though. Sometimes a song will help inform a character. Sometimes it hits on a theme. Sometimes it simply evokes a mood.

Blog postRecommended movies from the 1970s.
Movies released from 1970-1979. These would get at least a B rating from me at the time I saw them. Some movies, we watch again and like better. Some movies, we wonder what were we thinking? But enough with the caveats. This is a long list, so if you're looking for something to watch, maybe you'll find a few gems in here. List is in alphabetical order because I'm not about to try to rank them.

Blog post2019 in movies and a look back at the 2010s.
As a storyteller, I consume stories all the time. Novels, movies, TV shows, you name it. The problem with novels is that while I can recommend a bunch, there's just no way anyone can read every good book produced each year. Also, because I'm constantly writing books of my own, I can't keep up, so with the exception of a few favorite authors, I find that I don't get to many of the books I want to read sometimes for many y2 years ago Read more -

You are cordially invited to a murder...
My aunts, Liz and Clara, own a metaphysical bookstore in Cassandra Springs, a small town in Colorado. Aunt Liz thinks she's psychic, and Aunt Clara believes she has a ghost lover named Edward, and a ghost cat named Hannah Rose. I think they're making it up to seem eccentric because I know how things work in the real world.
But when Aunt Liz asks me to attend her annual murder game at Bostwick Manor, she's convinced she's going to be killed for real. It doesn't help that she invites the employees who hate her the most to the weekend retreat, and starts pushing their buttons.
Sure enough, she turns up with a knife in her third chakra.
Now I'm snowed-in with a group of her employees, and one of them is a murderer. My only ally is a Siamese cat named Nico, and let's face it, she mostly wants to be fed. I need to figure out whodunit on my own before the killer strikes again!
Don't miss this first novel in a humorous new cozy mystery series.
The cards are cool, so I check them out, but my magic-happy cousin, Sabrina, tells me I'm not supposed to touch them. Oops. Too late. Now the damn cards are tuned to me, and if someone else wants to use them, I have to die. Why couldn't she have led with that information?
Magic was never my scene, but my dad is one of the most powerful wizards in the world, so I've got unrealized potential if I ever bother to apply myself. I'd rather power nap, but with wizards, gunslingers, and cannibalistic shark dudes coming at me, that's not gonna happen.
They say I'm a half-assed wizard, but if I don't play my cards right, I'm gonna get my whole ass killed.
Vic is a writer hanging out with his dog in his favorite bar when a beautiful woman enters. She's followed by two men who want to abduct her, and things go sideways.
Vic wants to help her, but what can a lone man do against professional assassins?
Enjoy this twisted little short story.
The moon is full and Kelly Chan is back in action!
A domestic disputeKelly tries to help a mother and daughter out of a bad situation, but they neglect to tell her the woman's husband is not only a samurai, but he's also a freaking werewolf!
To protect the family, Kelly faces modern day samurai, more ninja than you can safely squeeze into a book, and rival companies each bent on creating an army of werewolves.Hunting a dead sorcerer in ancient Egypt
Sharon shows up with a time god named Chronos, and they send me back to ancient Egypt to stop a dead sorcerer named Henry Winslow from getting the Emerald Tablets of Thoth.
No big deal, right? If I can't stop him, the world I know will only be wiped from the sands of time.
But hey, I get to meet King Tut and his hot wife, which is great until Tut is killed and I'm blamed for his murder...
Part one of the three-volume time travel sequence.
We are not alone...
When Steve Riley stops for a burger on a road trip, a dying man hands him a file that proves the US government has aliens in captivity. Before he can even process that information, he's thrown into an ongoing battle between a secret breakaway group within the government, a private organization investigating UFOs, and different contingents of aliens from outer space who have been visiting Earth for millennia, and are on the verge of war.
But what can one man do? With Men in Black trying to kill him, a private group trying to recruit him, and aliens with their own agenda, Steve must find a way through the intricate web of conspiracies or die trying.
The grift. The scam. The double-cross. Blackmail and burglary; murder and larceny. Blood Business tracks the underbelly of human nature as it drags itself through the muck of our lesser angels in twenty-seven crime stories set in this world... and beyond.
"Blood Business is as satisfying as a stiff drink after a tough case. Deliciously gritty, and dark as a day-old bruise, these stories will thrill any noir fan."
—Jaye Wells, USA Today bestselling author
"In Blood Business, duality is a theme but nuance reigns. Honesty won't save you. Virtue is subjective. And what if the only difference between appearance and a reality is what we choose to believe? Cinematic at times, uncomfortably intimate at others, Blood Business is a visceral delight."
—John Wenzel, The Denver Post
“Blood Business compiles an absolutely stunning collection of talent."
—Brian Keene
"Editors Acevedo and Viola offer an anthology of noirish tales exploring the dark recesses of both real and supernatural worlds... Two sharp, distinctive, and complementary clusters of stories."
—Kirkus Reviews
"In this uniformly good anthology of noir stories, the authors are able to inject some life, of the supernatural variety, into a genre usually rife with clichés."
—IndieReader
"Take horror writing at its best and add a crime/mystery spin. Then pair this with psychological depth for the foundation of the special atmosphere and focus of Blood Business, where every story is powerfully wrought, filled with satisfying twists, and presented with a flair of originality and surprise not typically seen in crime story collections. For all these reasons, Blood Business is a unique, compelling, dark production very highly recommended for fans who like their crimes tinged with psychological depth and horror, and who look for original, unique, compelling productions where every story is a gem and no 'filler' is allowed."
—D. Donovan, Sr. Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

From the author team of Bill D. Allen and Gary Jonas: Pirates of the Outrigger Rift!
When the security director of the powerful corporation Nebulaco dies under mysterious circumstances, courier Sai Collins has one last top-secret delivery to make for him. But she has a secret of her own; she's a computer telepath who can connect to the grid without hardware.
It’s a talent she needs when she arrives at the drop point to make the delivery and is ambushed by heavily armed goons, barely escaping with her life. Now, caught in the crosshairs of feuding lords, unrelenting security forces, and dangerous outlaws, she’ll need some help to make it out alive. Enter a pair of unlikely allies also caught in the mix: charming, down-on-his-luck pilot Hank Jensen and jaded PI Mike Chandler. Their mission: take down the ruthless pirate who is bringing the galaxy to its knees with his bloody hijackings of corporate trade routes.
Unfolding at a break-neck pace, Pirates of the Outrigger Rift is the rollicking new sci-fi adventure of corporate espionage and interstellar piracy.

Stephen Noble, a rich old guy on the board of Dragon Gate Industries is executed by a clan from another dimension. Since I still owe a favor to the company, they hire me to provide executive protection services to the dead guy's grown kids. Graham and Rayna.
Rayna is hot, so that's all right, but Graham is a jerk. And it turns out they stole a dragon from the Marshall Clan and brought it to Boulder, Colorado.
Yeah, you heard me right. I said dragon.
Now Kelly and I are faced with protecting spoiled rich people from a team of assassins and the blood-hungry beasts they brought with them. Those things will kill anything in their path.
And did I mention the dragon?
Kelly Chan, the magically engineered assassin, in her first solo adventure!
Picking up a package for a friend should be easy, but when the package is at Tally's, a shop that caters to things that go bump in the night, and that package is a woman, things can go south fast.
Of course, if the person picking up the package is Kelly Chan, when things go south, bad guys die.
But what happens when the bad guys are already dead? Or more specifically, undead.
Kelly finds herself face-to-face with an actual vampire who has the power to issue commands Kelly has no choice but to follow.
So how do you kill something you've been commanded to protect?
My old man sics a nuisance demon named Kevin on me to force me to grow up and stop being a slacker. The only way I can expel the jerk is to develop magic I create and control. Until then, Kevin plans to push me, prod me, and annoy me into action.
It's one thing to miss a few naps, but Kevin shoves me into a dispute between a Greek god who wants to be a rock star and some hot women I thought were just myths, but make wonderful music together. Now I have to learn magic or the only nap I'll be taking is a dirt nap.
