This is a superb German TV production. Very well produced, directed. The connection of five people at times is simply far too unbelievable given the enormity of their relationships. They all wind up, one way or another, on the terrible Eastern Front. Savage warfare ... partisans are shown as Partisans ... but I don't believe there is much shown about the Wehrmacht involved with killing Jews ... but they are "observers" of the SD & SS killing Jews. The complicity of the Wehrmacht, Ordnungspolezei, etc., has by now been thoroughly documented. Two of the characters go down as Jews or politically unacceptable. The two Germans in the war (the war scenes are vivid and accurate given the budget) ... are altered horribly by what they were expected or chose to do. Americans have no understanding of the sheer brutality of how the Germans waged war in the Eastern front nations. Merciless. All Jews were communists; all communists were partisans; all partisans were Jews ... the Ornungspolezei killed many. But so did the Wehrmacht. I think that this was not fully addressed. But, the devastation of that generation of Germans is shown pretty clearly. That generation wanted war ... very few Germans did not support Nazism ... & they showed the ways in this film. There are inaccuracies for what the Jewish characters are able to do given the realities of the time period. For a very decent view of German Wehrmacht fighting against the Russians, this is a good film. The disintegration of morality in those forces on the Eastern Front can't be minimized. Too many saw what was happening, or participated. I felt the characterization was very good. They felt real to me as people, even if there were too many "coincidental" meet ups given the vastness of fighting on the Eastern Front. The SD, SS, Gestapo presence in Germany I think was simply too austere for fraternization with Jews & gentiles after a certain point. Nonetheless, this is a compelling series. Well worth watching. - one star for all the "coincidences." Not believable after a certain point. Squishing too much in ... but, an basically very good series from Germany.
