Rick Partlow is that rarest of species, a native Floridian. Born in Tampa, he attended Florida Southern College and graduated with a degree in History and a commission in the US Army as an Infantry officer.

His lifelong love of science fiction began with Have Space Suit---Will Travel and the other Heinlein juveniles and traveled through Clifford Simak, Asimov, Clarke and on to William Gibson, Walter Jon Williams and Peter F Hamilton. And somewhere, submerged in the worlds of others, Rick began to create his own worlds.

He has written over 40 books in a dozen different series, and his short stories have been included in twelve different anthologies.

He is currently writing the best-selling Drop Trooper series for Aethon Books, a mil-SF alien invasion series, as well as the Earth at War series for Pramantha Publishing.

He lives in northern Wyoming with his wife and two lovable mutts. Besides writing and reading science fiction and fantasy, he enjoys outdoor photography, hiking and camping.

Again, it is nice to read a book that does not have everyone just running forward and doing a WWI charge through automatic weapons. Fire and maneuver, supporting weapons, chain of command, and use of cover and concealment, just what they should have done.
Space battles that are fought without inertial dampeners and crews suffering under high G forces.
Loss of life.
No godlike weapons so superior that just one shot kills the enemy. Tactics and maneuvering to bring weapons to bear at the correct time.
So refreshing to read.
Very good.
Looking forward to the next.

Genesis has everything we want from Military Sci Fi. Told from the 3rd person perspective of a few different characters, each not only distinct but believable and imperfect, Genesis is a tale of first contact and the ramifications of the encountered aliens being hostile. With ship combat, space fighter combat, and ground combat, the story covers all the bases and handles each with a healthy respect for both military tradition and the limitations of science. While stronger in the ground combat scenes, the author still brings the ship and fighter combat to life creating tension while painting a clear picture in the reader's mind. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Mostly-near-future space tech, with the crews feeling G forces when the ships accelerate and weapons that are limited by real-world physics and fuel limits; battles that keep you reading and do not disappoint in their resolution; characters with developed personalities and plausible motivations; and plausible reasons for opposition from both the main antagonist alien species and the internal political issues. Up to book 4 in the series and not yet been disappointed, already pre-ordered book 5.

For my money, this is about as good as it gets. This is a very well-designed and thought-through story. It could actually happen as it reads. I think this is as good as some of the very best among the more famous writers in this sub-genre.
He covers all the battle modes from squad level to fighter spacecraft to big ships vs big ships and each mode is written well to be both exciting and written clearly enough that the reader can understand how the battle would unfold.
The characters are sharply enough written that we care if they get snuffed by some no-good alien or not. I also liked his explanation for the wormholes, the gates that allow long-distance travel.
This is serious, hard military science fiction of the highest level. I like this author.

I've read several other SF series by Rick Partlow, all in the same setting in which the human Commonwealth is locked in war with the alien Tahni Imperium. This book takes us back in time to first contact with the Tahni and the beginning of the war. The author's experience as a U.S. Army infantry officer has always lent a high degree of realism to his accounts of ground combat. I was very pleased to find in this book that he is equally talented in describing space battles, from the ship movements actually according to Newtonian physics, to the tactical decision-making, to the choices, uses, and effects of different weapon systems including various missiles, countermeasures, lasers, and coil guns. It was all fascinating and rang very true to life! I'm looking forward to the next in this series.
