Action Plan
Having grown up in rural Idaho under fundamentalist Mormon parents and an abusive older brother, Tara Westover has written Educated: A Memoir from her experience. Despite her parents' objections, Tara wasn't enrolled in school. Her father saw public education as a threat to their lifestyle.
She provided the family with medical assistance in sicknesses and even extreme injuries, as her mother was a self-trained midwife and herbalist.
Graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University, she went on to Cambridge University with a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and received a graduate degree from Cambridge University.
She began to feel that her path to becoming educated was unacceptable as her parents and other family members viewed it.
Tara gained a new perspective on her childhood as well. From that perspective, she adopted a more authentic lifestyle.
In her story, she mentions nine principles with which individuals seeking growth, maturity, truth, and authenticity can identify. Tara's story is summarized and analyzed in this book to highlight nine principles and examples that demonstrate them.
In light of Tara's story and the principles shared in the book, we highly recommend reading the entire book.

This is a companion, of sorts, to Sanjay Gupta’s Keep Sharp - How to Build a Better Brain at Any Age. The book itself covers a wide range of subjects to do with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and cognitive decline. He cites his own intensive research into the subject and calls us up to take preventive measures against loss of brain function. One of these measures is appropriate eating styles.
What follows is mostly a recipe book, but in the spirit of Dr. Gupta’s own belief that a diet does not work as well as a lifestyle change, we’re also going to take a look at some of the ideas explored in Keep Sharp. In some cases, we will expand on them.
We’ll take a look at the ideas that inform Gupta’s book, and his own conclusions. We’ll also look at how we might address our own issues with eating healthily and some of the reasons why we might not.
There are times we will explore a particular food group or meal and how it can help us to maintain cognitive function, and we’ll work out when to eat and when not to eat.
Further, we will, of course, look at some recipe ideas that are built around Gupta’s Sharp plan, and the diet that informs it, the MIND diet.
This is an unofficial summary & analysis of Gary Taube's "The Case for Keto" designed to enrich your reading experience. Genius Reads is wholly responsible for this content and is not associated with the original author in any way. Text Copyright © Genius Reads
The Case for Keto is the latest of a number of books by Gary Taubes dealing with nutrition and how we approach the problems of obesity. As a journalist with a scientific background, he has previously looked at the benefits of fat in Nutrition: The Soft Science of Dietary Fat, calories in the best-selling Good Calories, Bad Calories, and the detrimental health effects of sugar and its properties in The Case Against Sugar. In addition to co-founding the Nutrition Science Initiative in 2012, he has also won the Science in Society Journalism Award three times, amongst other awards.
The book is laid out in a journalistic style rather than academic, making it highly readable. He takes each issue on its own merits and looks back at the history of each aspect dating back, at times, to the 19th century. Each chapter starts with an epigraph relating to the subject and he often illustrates his claims with quotes, pictures, or diagrams. What is not shown in this summary is the comprehensive list of sources and footnotes citing studies and articles.
Much of Taube's discussion is drawn from clinicians, physicians, and Keto dietary advocates from scientific backgrounds. He is keen to draw not only from those directly involved with nutrition but also from related sciences like endocrinology. The book has much anecdotal evidence from these sources, many of whom were interviewed specifically for the book.
It also draws on key figures in the science of nutrition, such as Robert Atkins, Ancel Keys, and from the 19th century, William Banting. In doing so, he explores how our attitudes toward diet are the legacy of sometimes flawed thinking, and that, in our over-cautious attitude to fat, we have missed the opportunity to engage with diet and obesity at a more scientific level.
