Wanted this to be good

I wish this movie had been free rather than pay for a movie that didn't make the grade. This is an interesting story but the continuous flashbacks can be confusing. The real disappointment is the ending. They never show how the legal system proved the case. We just saw the outcome in one sentence splashed up at the end of the movie. What saves the movie is the opportunity to watch Vanessa Redgrave. Still glorious at 84.

A Must for Christolph Waltz & DC Society Fans
Verified purchase
If you liked Christoph Waltz in "Inglorious Basterds" and "Django Unchained," you'll love this movie. If you like reading about DC snobs and the DC world of social climbers and power players, you'll like this movie too.

Christoph Waltz plays his usual role as a foreigner who, while playing nice, is clearly evil underneath. Another great performance by him. Everyone else plays a good job as DC snobs who are trying way too hard to seem important, and who can be played like a violin if you stroke their egos. So this is a good "con artist who eventually gets what's coming to him" film. Annette Benning does a good job, but many, many actresses could have played her part.

But you've seen this movie in many forms. And it's shot on a small budget. So I didn't give it four stars. But those who do give it four stars aren't unreasonable. I think giving it five stars is too much, though.

Bottom Line- you won't regret watching Georgetown. It's based on a true story of a delusional con man who took advantage of a elderly Georgetown (that's a neighborhood in DC) socialite.

Well Done but Incomplete

For the most part this was enjoyable and well acted. Very happy to see Annette Bening and Ms. Redgrave again.

But there's a gaping hole where more details of husband's conviction should have been. How did they make the leap? What evidence did they pull together? It would have made the movie much more interesting to know these details.

We were gripped throughout the whole movie. Excellent movie - writing, acting, directing. And Redgrave, Bening and Walz gave Oscar worthy performances. Incredible true story.

Thoroughly nasty, droll, true-life story

A German adventurer, here portrayed by the film's director, lands in Washington DC and romances an old woman (Vanessa Redgrave) with high-level government and think-tank connections. The adventurer is a transparent fraud from the outset, yet he gains credibility because it's difficult to believe anyone could be such a charlatan. Murder and international diplomacy all come together in this heady brew, which cannot be delineated too far without a rash of spoilers.

Horrible, boring waste of acting talent. Poorly written script which could not be saved even with remarkable cast. It was not a psychological thriller, mystery, compelling drama, interesting, entertaining or funny. Zero star & not worth watching even if it was free, which it is not.
