In a time when women have little choice in their futures, young Mary Fletcher is facing one of the worst. While her father is on his deathbed, Mary's brother sells her to the highest bidder. At nineteen-years-old and still underaged, there is nothing she can do about it. An unlikely savior comes in the form of the elderly but kind Duke of Fenwick, who marries her out from under her brother's nose.
For the first time in her life, Mary is happy and cared for. Until the night she comes home from the opera and finds the duke murdered. Suddenly a widow, strange things begin happening as Mary discovers more of the old duke's history.
She is surrounded by mysteriously shredded clothing, ghostly moving furniture, animated portraits, and black-eyed children. Mary is haunted, by a ghost who won't give up until she finds out who killed her husband.
If you enjoy a good murder mystery, a vengeful ghost, and a love story - this is the book for you.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"This is an engrossing story, deftly crossing a number of genres while avoiding cliche. Thoroughly enjoyed it." - Booksprout review
"Horrible relations, vile murder, vengeful ghosts, and a plot that thickens better than my gravy." - Goodreads review
From the Author
If you also enjoy a good murder, a vengeful ghost, and a round in the boxing ring this is the book for you. It was a delight to write and find that balance of spooky and fun. There were some heavy topics that were covered, which I tried to counter with wit and humor. It dragged me down the research hole several times (mostly in Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue), and I loved every moment of it. - Mel

About the author

Mel wrote, illustrated, and published her first book at the age of five. It was not a huge success and she only sold one copy to her mother. Undaunted, she plunged herself into reading every book she could get her hands on. She found a love for ghost stories and gothic tales, suspense-driven works of fiction, and of course a little romance never hurt. Now she combines all three of her favorite genres and writes up tales that feel familiar until you find out things are not what they seem. She lives in the Wasatch Mountains and enjoys time with her children, her husband, and her 100-pound lab/mastiff/dane, Boudica, who thinks she's a lap dog. She also has a serious addiction to yarn, fiber arts, and crochet hooks.

Since I discovered the author’s debut novel a little over a year ago, this one is the third book published I have read, and I have loved everyone of them. Each has its unique gothic, paranormal vibe, with everything to make you shiver in the good sense of the term.
So get cosy, snuggle in the couch and be transported in a time long past.
While this is a romance, outside the two main characters, there is of course the ghost, but there is a forth protagonist is this tale, Luke, the late Duke, he is the one who set everything in motion.
Henry is a knight, doing the Duke’s bidding but also a rescuer in his own right. So even if he has been in love with Mary for years, he has no real power like the Duke to save her, so he accepts her safety can only come from marriage to a kind and caring peer. One no one can outsmart, as cunning and prepared Luke is.
Mary has lived many years under the thumb of others, rejected by her mother, beaten by her brother, and exploited by her father. So marriage with Luke is a respite from her wretched life, when she was always scraping for something to make ends meet.
Luke is a man who has lived a contented life and abhors abuse of all sorts. So when he learns his late lover’s granddaughter is in danger, he jumps in to rescue her. Then from there, he sets a different course on the move with only the well-being of those he cares into view.
Then there is the ghost, the remain of a being from the past set of a revenge path and determined to see it through its end.
So while it is no ballad into the wood, it is a tale with grim aspects but also fun, humorous moments and despite the darkness of the story, it is love and concern which are the main purpose behind some of the dark deeds.
So do not deny yourself if you like a good gothic romance story.

I hesitated to give it 5 stars though, because I do have a few nits. I decided to stay with 5 stars because I really did enjoy it, despite the nits.
The author really needs to get a better editor...someone who knows how to use 'had' and 'have' in sentences instead of always relying on straight past tense. Also, there was an instance when the character name Luke was used when a different character was intended. I won't dock a star for grammatical nits, but I mention them so the author can fix them in future printings.
I think everyone already knows it's a ghost story/murder mystery, and what I'm about to say gets disclosed fairly early in the story, so these shouldn't be spoilers, but, just in case:
*******************VERY SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!!!**********************
I was disappointed that the murdered guy wasn't the ghost. The murdered guy had such a great character I was really looking forward to hearing more from him!
The black eyes thing was never explained and it totally didn't make any sense. It seemed like a poor attempt to be creepy. Sorry, the story wasn't creepy. It was wonderful and interesting, but it wasn't really scary or creepy. If that was the goal, she didn't quite pull that off.
************************END SPOILER ALERT**************************
The ending seemed rather rushed.
Other than those minor nits, it was a good read and I just ordered another of her books.
I believe the Strength of Love is ever Lasting.
True Love does endure.
So you need to read this book, and recognize that spiritual help is really possible.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were dynamic and believable, the settings were moody and set the stage well, and the way the characters built and grew with (or in spite of) each other was wonderfully written. I initially thought Duke Fenwick would turn out to be the lecherous old man taking advantage of the leading lady's plight. Instead, he is sweet schemer with delightful plans for Mary and what he thinks will make her happy. Fortunately, Mary is far from a martyr or damsel in destress. She refuses to be dominated by the machinations of her dastardly brother - a man who could give Cinderella's step-mother tips on being horrendous. She is bright, determined, and relatable.
The mystery is well paced throughout the story and the romance is a well-built slow-burn, but the author manages to balance both sides of the plot adroitly. I never felt like the mystery was being rushed to make room for the romance or vice versa. I felt the time period was well represented as well.

The writing style is easy to read and the story told at a fast pace. This really suits all the twists and turns in this ghost tale.
Mary is a likeable heroine who does not fit the society norms of her day which is great.
I really like how Mel tells historical stories with quirky characters.
