Four years ago, I lied. I stood in front of the police, my friends and family, and made up a story, my best one yet. And all of them believed me.
I wasn't surprised. Telling stories is what made me famous. Fifteen bestsellers. Millions of fans. Fame and fortune.
Now, I have one last story to write. It'll be my best one yet, with a jaw-dropping twist that will leave the nation stunned and gasping for breath.
They say that sticks and stones will break your bones, but this story? It will be the one that kills me.

The strange thing about this book is that while the title alone is obvious, I don’t think I can actually divulge much about the plot without giving away major spoilers. Even though the bomb drops pretty early on, I want to leave you to discover that on your own instead of me ruining it for you.
Helena Ross is one of the top-selling and most popular romance authors around. She’s built a phenomenal career, and was living the fairytale life with her husband, Simon, and their daughter, Bethany. It’s just that… things aren’t always what they seem. Behind closed doors is where another world lies. One even Helena herself does her best to ignore.
Now, she’s ready to write her story, to tell the best one she’s ever told, to tell her truths, and she’s pressed for time to get it done. Three months, that’s all she has. It’s a brutal schedule, and when she’s honest with herself, she knows she needs to reach out to her agent, Kate, for suggestions. That’s when she recruits her ghost writer for assistance. What stems from the unlikely pairing is an eye-opening, gut-wrenching, and heartbreaking journey. Helena has been hiding the truth for over four years, and it’s time to address the skeletons in the closet before it’s too late.
I can count the amount of stories that have changed my life in recent years on one hand, and The Ghost Writer is there. I can also count the books that have made me openly cry on one hand, and, surprise surprise, The Ghost Writer is there.
The funny thing is, I didn’t always find myself on Helena’s side. She was reserved, curt, formal, and cold. She also had type-A tendencies that bordered on driving me batty. However, she was going through something very real, life-changing, relatable, and hard-hitting. Torre doesn’t beat around the bush and wax poetic about any of it either. Her lines are rigid, to the point, and honest. Her style really added to the mood of the story, and when it meshed together with the unfolding complications of the plot, I was met with a beautifully tragic and emotional ride.
What I absolutely adore about Torre is the variety you get with her stories. She wears so many different hats and can jump into numerous moods for the worlds she wants to create and that’s commendable. When so many stick to one genre (which is also fine), she dares to branch out and I find myself getting something different every single time I pick up one of her books. The Ghost Writer is contemporary fiction and filled with suspense. The Innocence series is pure drama and erotic romance. The Deanna Madden series falls under thriller. I could go on and on. I never read the same scenario twice when it comes to her work.
Needless to say, I haven’t picked up another book since I finished this one a few days ago because I’m still reeling. Like I said, the best book I’ve read in 2017 and I can’t rave about it enough. However, I’m going to quit while I’m ahead because if you haven’t read this one already, you need to go get a copy asap because it’s utterly brilliant and moving. Please read this one and thank me later!
You must read this book .
You must read it because Alessandra Torre tells a story that will grab you by the jugular and not let you go, even after you turn the last page. She will hook you from the first page. She will make you gasp and cry and even laugh a little. She will lead you down a path, dropping occasional hints, yet still shock you with a plot twist that will both horrify you and make you feel so incredibly sad.
The Ghostwriter is a book made for a book club discussion. What would you do if you were Helena? What if you were Kate or if you were Mark?
What would you do?
If you're accustomed to Hot Romance Novels from Alessandra Torre, understand that this is not one of those. This is the story of a woman trying to both fight and make peace with the ghosts in her life with the help of a ghostwriter.
I urge you to not read any blurbs other than the one Torre provides. Go into this book as cold as possible, knowing as little as you can. Soak in Torre's words and mood and tone. Be aghast and appalled and hopeful.
Torre says in her notes at the end of this book that she struggled with writing it and almost quit. Be so very thankful that she wrote this story.
Now. Go read it. Then come back here, hit up the comments, and let's discuss.
Torre did well with her range of characterization, the main character being easily dislikeable with and without good reason, but highly undeserving of sympathy, despite her one measly act of heroism toward the end. Many could argue she got what she deserved.
The two major plot twists carried the heavy weight of this novel, making it worth completing. Also, the only portion of this book easy to speed through is the last 75%. If a fraction of a book is entertaining, then it's a good *portion*, not a good *book*.
The title itself is a bit misleading, for no purpose that I could understand. The book has little to do with the Ghostwriter themself. Furthermore, the subject matter that the Ghostwriter is supposed to cover is repeatedly dangled in front of the reader, supposedly to create mystery or suspense (?), but dragged on and on and on and on so painfully that it subtracted impact from revelation and climax.
Helena's journey during her last few days had moments that were heartwarming, with little life lessons everyone can carry away with them. The book also has a (fairly predictably) happy ending.
Ultimately, 'The Ghostwriter' was good in its themes, characterization, climax and ending. But I found it to be neither spectacular nor memorable enough for a high rating.

This is not a love story and there is no HEA if you are looking for one. It’s raw, it’s real, it’s ugly and twisted, and it will leave you with a bitter taste at the end. I loved the story although it was difficult to read. It started a bit slow, the ending was revealed in advance, but the events that lead to it weren’t clear. It kept me guessing, it kept me wondering, it kept me intrigued right till the very end where the ugly truth was finally told. It took me by surprise and I wasn’t expecting the direction the story took but little by little I understood the motives, the actions, the painful circumstances that lead to this gut-wrenching ending. This didn’t make it any easier to read. It was devastating and it left me a bit depressed. Yes, there was some kind of closure to the whole story, but it couldn’t change the outcome.
This book made me question a lot of things – I’m not going in details about it, not to spoil the story for anyone, but probably I would have done the same exact thing as Helena, given the circumstances. However, the whole book still left a painful feeling inside of me. It was good, but if you’re looking for something sweet, light and drama free, stay away from it. If you want a realistic, heartbreaking story, then go for it. It’s drama-packed and devastating. Not exactly my kind of fun, but it was well written, with some twists and turns I didn’t see coming and an intriguing story to keep your interest to the very end.

I would have been a complete and utter weepy mess on the tube the next day. It struck a cord, causing my heart to ache, and my breath to hitch, I couldn't help but feel empathy for Helena Ross, the ending so powerful, it was beautifully heartbreaking, the whole book was so well executed, how could I not shed tears.
Alessandra leaves tiny snippets, and clues as the story progresses, being quite intuitive I tend to figure out plots, part of which I found to be correct but it only spurred me on to keep reading. I needed to get to the end, for the final piece of the puzzle to fall into place, and when it did, it was pure literacy genius.
This is definitely one of my favourite reads to date, I know for a fact that I'll be reading this book again. The story will stay with you well after you turn the final page, I'm just flabbergasted that this is the first book that I've ever read by this author, but so thankful that I 1-clicked on Amazon.

I don't want to say to much and spoil it, but this is one of them stories that plays with your mind as you try to figure it out, as this book is suspenseful! I also found it emotional and had tears running down my face. This story is brilliantly written and would recommend it to be read.
