The Gilded Cage is the third book in The Science Officer series by Blaze Ward.

Gilded Cage filled the absence that Mind Field left. In character development mostly. Where Javier and Syroka straddle this crater of intense, and confusing, hatred. I can understand his loathing. Hers seems to be more so self manifestation, that organically transitioned into reality. She convinced herself it was the only truth, and he very naturally confirmed it for her. Seems like a survival mechanism.

Javier is slowly unraveling a weave of intricate personalities that unmistakably resembles split-personality-disorders. With at least a dash of PTSD. Somewhere inside of his careful Javier, quirky, Science Officer veneer lives a man who committed unspeakable deeds in the name of righteousness and futuristic patriotism. This amalgamation of assassin, Captain, and more.

I'm happy with Willhemina's reappearance. Not entirely comforted by the circumstances that brought her return. I wouldn't have wished these experiences on Sykora. Even if she allows her own internalized issues to hue reality and create magnificent problems, easily of avoided. Hopefully there will be more Mina in this tales future. Her companionable relationship with Suvi supports this eventuality. And I personally agree with the confined AI, Navarre could benefit from her influence.

Well I essentially have to start off this review by wondering who Blaze Ward is and why he/she/it has decided to conceal their identity. The Gilded Cage is the third in the series involving the same cast of characters. The starship has just defeated a minefield and released a spiritual person from a five hundred year cryogenic sleep. They send her off to a frontier post where they were to drop her off and their gunnery officer is captured and held for ransom. So our science officer volunteers to go and save her only he really hates the gunnery officer because essentially he is an arrogant prick who is full of himself and she hurt his feelings. Not a bad story, easy to read and fun. For pirates they're pretty lame, no walking the plank,rape, or murder amongst the crew. The science officer for all his claims of peace and love and vegetarianism proves to be a stone killer.

The only thing I dislike about this book, actually all the science officer books, is that they are short. You can easily read them in under two hours. I’ve just ordered the next in the series.

Solid characterization vies with fast pacing to give an exciting read. Our protagonist finds himself in the position of having to rescue a hated enemy from death by pirate. Fortunately he has the help of a few friends(and,of course,a trusted AI) and havoc reigns. Some of Blaze Ward's tightest writing combined with bad bad guys and likable good guys give us fine adventure. Recommended.

My only problem with this series is that the books are just too darn short. I start reading and the next thing I know, I'm at the end and a couple of hours are gone. This is a great addition to the series although I did miss not having as much "science" stuff as before. However, that was made up with lots of action. This is an exciting, thrilling read.

The end of this story came too soon, especially since it's a short read. However it was a great little tale in the Science Officer series. It has a little of everything; romance, revenge, good guys absolutely destroying the bad guys, and of course a heavily armed AI. Can't wait for book four.
