Inspired by true events, this is the story of Sarah, a teenager imprisoned by her father in the basement of their family home for over twenty years. The father told his family that Sarah had run away with a boyfriend they disapproved of. Meanwhile, as the years went by, he would secretly visit her in the basement, raping her while her mother and siblings continued living upstairs.

Don’t Listen to Bad Reviews! Great Movie!

All the bad reviews stem from not being able to play/watch the movie and saying they’ve been scammed out of money. It’s Amazon people you know you’re getting your money back if it doesn’t work. A review should be left based off the movie itself.

Anyways, not usually a fan of lifetime movies but my wife said this was highly recommended online. We checked it out and it is based on a true story, it’s gut wrenching to think these events happened in real life. But it’s worth the watch and I do not think you’ll be disappointed.

Never saw it -- it wouldn't play.

The movie wouldn't play after I paid for it. I now have two movies that won't play: The Girl in the Basement and The Woman in White (with Tara Fitzgerald). Please either fix them or refund my money. Thank you.

Very disturbing story...

As other reviewers have shared, I also shed a few tears while watching this film. It was a horrifying movie to watch, and to know it was based on a true story...frightening. What makes it worse the Lifetime film actually glosses over a lot what they poor woman went through. I decided to learn more about this story, and the woman in real life was violently abused and degraded, as the sociopath father was obsessed with torture porn. She also was forced to bear 7 of his children. In the film, the children are depicted "normal" for the most part, but I'm sure in real life probably suffered some kind of issues...due to the fact they were born of incest. It's just very upsetting. I hope the real life woman and her children are doing well...because, damn! The film itself was okay. The early parts of the film were solid, things were rushed near the ending.

Soooo good

I don’t understand the people rating the movie because they couldn’t play it. That has nothing to do with the movie itself. But anyway, this movie is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. It did not feel at all like a lifetime movie. The acting was superb and I just felt so immersed. I was disgusted, I was sad, I was angry. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.

Missed The Boat

It was very loosely based on the true story of Josef Fritzl. I always thought there would be a movie made about this bizarre story. I would’ve hoped it would be more accurate. This obviously made for tv movie was a bit of a disappointment in that regard. Aside from the inaccuracies, the acting and story telling are around a B-, typical of made for tv movies. The ending is very sappy and corny. Its just not holding to a realistic outcome for such an atrocity. A story centered around the family’s recovery would’ve had much more of an impact for me.
