Rock N' Roll Litigation At Its Best -- You Gotta Love This One! Spell-binding Performances by ALL Actors.
Verified purchase
As a lawyer and retired judge, I can speak with some authority that the writers of Goliath have spun a great story supported by "real life" legal realities. I particularly enjoyed the episode where the main character gives "deposition tips" to an expert witness. It made me smile because it was "so true." This series is exquisitely entertaining, the characters are well-crafted, believable, and immensely genuine. Billy Bob Thornton gives us the best acting performance of his career, no small feat considering his past successes. He demonstrates the kind of lawyer we judges would simultaneously fear and admire, the ones who push the system to its limits but do so with an unerring determination to discover the truth of the matter regardless of personal consequences. The characters are complex, difficult, messy and heroic. This is signified by superb screen-writing and acting, and anyone with experience in the world of the hard-core litigation will recognize the characters. These characters are drawn from real-life. The language may surprise some, but the fact is, this is actually not too far off the mark in how lawyers talk -- rough, coarse and bold. Hopefully they keep the same actors and writers driving this project forward into future seasons. Each one of the actors is spot-on. In over 40 years of litigation, I have met every one of these characters!! Somebody on the inside of the litigation game is writing or reviewing the script.

Take it from the Judge, this show is Affirmed!

Excessively Vulgar!
Verified purchase
Excellent acting and directing, BUT...the music was brash, the plotline sometimes unbelievable, the vulgarity excessive, the sexual displays totally unnecessary, most of the characters, with the exception of Billy Bob, were one-dimensional. I do not recommend this film unless you like dialogue that has the F word in almost every sentence the characters speak.

Billy Bob Thornton Is Back In The Acting Elite With This One!
Verified purchase
Was not going to watch this because Mr. Thornton's acting had been off a bit of late. But some friends I trust in my gaming clan said it was well worth watching. I took the chance and am so very glad I did. FANTASTIC! Great acting, story, direction and yes even the editing was flawless. I am sort of new to Prime and have found many things to watch and enjoy this though was a gem that I encourage you to take a chance on and view as well. In my view this is a legal drama with hints of classic Film Noir. Not a down and out detective but a down and out lawyer, woman that can not be trusted any further than she can be thrown, crooked law enforcement, crooked judges, ambitious late to the game allies and a all powerful villain. Yes all the elements of a classic Film Noir. I always hate reviews that spoil the show so I will stop with this Mr. Thornton welcome back to the top tiers of acting...Thank goodness for us!

Raw SoCal only BBThornton could depict
Verified purchase
Ever since my first 1996 southern California visit, I have been forever amazed at the paradox that, in spite of the paradise weather and sunshine smiles, the SoCal general public vibes come off as depressed angst.
1--That stark contrast is totally captured by the inimitable Billy Bob Thornton's alcoholic attorney Billy McBride living out of a Santa Monica motel driving a s***box convertible befriending a stray pit bull no less, meeting his daughter (Diana Hopper) at his neighborhood bar Chez Jay (actual place today).
2--Most every character has some degree of this paradox as well: lawyers Callie Senate (Molly Parker), Michelle McBride (Maria Bello), and Donald Cooperman (William Hurt) all exude aloof, high-powered confidence but have very dysfunctional inner/personal lives.
3--Billy's crowd were even more duplicitous, and the car scenes showing this motley crew cruising down the beach front avenue are soooo SoCal.
4--Prostitute Brittany (Tania Raymonde) nailed the vulnerable, shallow, sexy, valley-girl, tinsel-town appearance while abusing killer drugs.
5--Patty (Nina Arianda) is a hoot with her blunt "yappiness" but heartfelt support of Billy.
6--And Lucy's (Olivia Thirlby) gradual sexual harassment leading to pathetic Stockholm-syndrome adoration of Cooperman is remarkably realistic.
7--But my highest praise goes to Thornton's pitch-perfect portrayal of alcoholic demons even in the final scene when we aren't sure if he has fallen off the wagon for good or not. . .some cliffhanger!
8--Finally, the screenwriters provide authentic dialogues and several plot surprises to make you binge-watch all 8 episodes as one long film so plan a weekend watch.
Amazon is hiring some fabulous acting for our affordable home viewing. . .thank you kindly!

Unbearably slow and overacted
Verified purchase
As someone who watches a lot of the really slow European mysteries (like Sheffield, The Tunnel, etc.), this one tried even my patience. It's really, really slow, which pretty much every episode just rehashing the exact same plot points and character relationships. Could easily have been 2 episodes. And it's terribly overacted, almost like the director was begging everyone to overact. Too bad.

and I have always enjoyed watching Maria Bello (loved her in The Cooler)
Verified purchase
I began watching this new Amazon series with a sense of anticipation. I was anticipating seeing Billy Bob Thorton do something he hadn't done before. I was excited to see William Hurt perform in a series. I was interested in seeing what Molly Parker, one of the leads in House of Cards, would be bringing to the table, and I have always enjoyed watching Maria Bello (loved her in The Cooler). Other than that, I never turned down the opportunity to see a new show come out of Hollywood, especially when it would be shot just a few neighborhoods away from where I now live.

What I got in Episode 1 was a dark and twisted story that started off (literally) with a bang, but fizzled to a cliche-ridden, tired yet true story about a man who was once at the top of his game, but now was at the bottom of the heap. I think my exact response was, "Whatever. I feel that I've seen this all before, dating back to the '70's."

Then, I gave it another chance, as I always do with a new series, and it started to pull me in. Yes, it was still rife with cliche, but the characters started to reveal themselves and I became interested. [Anything to take me away from the "reality TV of the Presidential debates.] However, it didn't feel as though it was "enough to keep me engaged" ... especially given that there are dozens and dozens of other shows to watch.

Then, it happened. By Episode 3, I felt "hooked." It wasn't any ONE thing (and I'm trying to remain Spoiler-Free), but an overall feel that perhaps this "low-life could indeed become the Goliath." And given that I love underdog stories, I was willing to give BBT and his cast of characters one more chance.

Yes, I still have to finish Season 1. And I will. Because I HAVE to know a few things...many by which you will likewise become intrigued.

Stay Tuned...

Worth watching. Almost always enjoy BB Thornton, and this is him at near his best.

Wow. Another really real well done story. Enjoyable, believable characters, excellent acting and nice attention to interpersonal details often left (or written) out. And yes, the opposing lawyers were a little card board cutout, one dimensional. But as far as how everyone behaves, I have had a large number of lawyer friends and can say they really do run the gamut: from polite, to beyond crass: They are everyman. Like any other group. Spending their lives attempting to "cut through the nonsense" (really, that's what they do though we don't see it that way.), They dispense with niceties VERY often and are perceived by most, as point blank and even rude. I come away with a different angle: I actually think most of them are pragmatic as hell, and more rudely honest with themselves, and even others, than most people (at least when discussing the law). That is not to say the practice of law itself is that way: They all do very pragmatic, cold, calculating things that really straddle "honest", and have departed "fair" a long time ago. But, while most people arbitrate, most of the time, lawyers are too frequently placed in a winner take all environment, and coming away as someone perceived as a "decent person", well that's much tougher when you are asked, paid, and in fact, legally compelled to only defend one side's interests within a framework they didn't build. Even though they employ skill sets from all three, They are lawyers, not diplomats or arbiters.

If You Have A Law Degree, Or Even A High School Diploma, Pass on Goliath

Every aspect of this show is completely unbelievable. I love how Billy Bob Thornton's character is going to file a multi-million dollar lawsuit based on the fact that something "just doesn't seem right." There are sanctions for that.

Also, Patty was such a poorly written character and it was painful to watch. It made me cringe.

I could go on and break down every aspect of the show that was absurd, but I don't have time. Great cast, horrible writing -- so bad, in fact, that I am tempted to quit my job as a lawyer to move to LA and become a writer on an Amazon show. And I would admittedly be a horrible fiction writer.
