Six teens murdered. A suspect behind bars. A desperate father. In a case this shadowy, the truth is easy to hide.
Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives—predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning—and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development…
Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson’s innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client’s name.
As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen’s suspicion that Robert is hiding something—and that he might not be the only one with a secret.

The protagonist is as unsympathetic as I have encountered, with a terrible non-standard of ethics both professional and personal. Sketchy, implausible plot, truly substandard. The lie is that this is in any way a book worth reading.
Six teenagers have been murdered. They have been sexually assaulted and their sexual organs have been removed and discarded like trash. So it's shocking when the seventh victim returns to his home, hurt but alive, after weeks of his absence. He was able to escape and is pointing the finger at his high school teacher, Randall Thompson!
Dr. Gwen Moore is a psychiatrist. She treats the worse kind of patient. She treats the ones who have urges to harm others. Gwen tries to guide them into a place where they can self-control these fantasies. However, a recent client and his wife are dead and now the police want to talk to her about it. At the same time, Robert Kavin, a defense attorney, wants her to come up with a profile for the Bloody Heart Killer and Randall. There is one caveat, Robert is the father of the sixth victim and he believes the man is innocent.
But how can he be sure?
I have to tell you as soon as I opened the first page I was pulled into the story. There is no way you can put this book down. I absolutely love everything about it. The dark setting, the intrigue, the twist, Gwen, her job, her psych friend, her pet.
Everything about it was perfect!
Cliffhanger: No
5/5 Fangs
Meet Dr. Moore she is a psychiatrist who specializes in killers dealing with Personality disorders and violent compulsions. She’s been keeping a professional eye on the BH Killer, like everyone else in the LA area. She works with high-risk clients.
Meet Robert Kavin a defense attorney who wants to represent the man accused of murdering six teens. Robert’s son Gabe was one of the killers victims. He’s hired Dr. Moore to profile the killer.
Alessandra Torre or A.R. Torre speaks my literary language. Her writing voice is the brand I search for. Not genre but writing style. She falls within the category of a well written storyteller taking everyday words and turning them into something spectacular and thrilling.
This is a fast paced thriller with Defense Attorney Robert Kavin and Dr. Gwen Moore combing over case files. It’s not your typical, police procedure type of investigation. It’s far better with the workings of a doctor specialising in profiling killers and a dad who wants justice for his dead son.
Alessandra Torre has more than twenty novels. I’ve read and reviewed twenty-one of her books. She’s my one-click author.
I had my suspicions about the killer which panned out. What I hadn’t figured out was motive. All that was explained. This was a well thought out and executed story from beginning to end.
Torre gives Gwen a partner, although that partnership begins more as a one-night stand than anything professionally based. Robert, a high-profile defense attorney, has a personal connection to the case, and he seeks Gwen's help. Tensions build, both professionally and personally, as Gwen and Robert keep important information from each other. Their motivations are not nefarious, however, leaving us with an idea of what those good lies can be.
You may think you know who did it, but Torre is ready to snatch the rug out from under you. She never lets you get comfortable, either with her characters or her story, before knocking you off-kilter. You question everything--Gwen, Robert, their suppositions and conclusions--knowing that if something seems obvious, it's likely a ruse.
I love thrillers, particularly psychological suspense. The Good Lie had me glued, furiously turning the pages to find out what happens next. The subject matter is painful at times to read because it's heartbreaking, yet I couldn't turn away.

The “Bloody Heart” BH killer, is one of the most depraved serial killers and he is difficult to profile and almost impossible to catch. He wants to be famous; he wants credit for each kill, he toys with his victims for weeks before killing them, but he leaves no signs and no evidence. The BH killer is controlled, organised, intelligent and analytical but a showman who displays the bodies spread-eagled, the genitals removed, a heart carved into the chest of each victim (his calling card), and their pinkie finger removed. Yet there are inconsistencies, there is evidence that the killer is showing acts of kindness because some of the wounds inflicted during their captivity have been treated. Why? And Who is this person?
Dr Gwen Moore is a psychiatrist, treating patients with violent tendencies. As well as being notified by police that her patient John Abbott may have murdered his wife Brooke before committing suicide, Gwen is approached by defense attorney, Robert Karin, to help profile the serial killer. He is convinced that his client is innocent and Scott Harden who accused his client of the abduction and murder knows more than he is saying. What complicates the story even more is the personal connection Robert has to the case, for his own son was also murdered by the BH Killer.
This book is multi layered, with a cast of convincing characters that seem interconnected in some way, but the link is difficult to make, and too many people are keeping secrets which further heightens the tension in the book. The story telling is superb, and the author uses their knowledge and / or research of the topic of psychology and personality disorder to write a very credible book with a wicked plot, lots of red herrings and an unpredictable ending.
This is one of the most captivating psychological thrillers with an outstanding plot full of suspense and tension. If you haven’t read already, get a copy, then sit down and put your seat belt on because you are in for one hell of a ride.

This was such a gripping book to read, it had me on the edge of my seat many times and had my mind working over time trying to work it all out. A brilliantly written thriller that blew my mind and i couldn't put it down, I loved everything about it! Wow!!!
READ ON KU!!!

This is a psychological thriller. Full of murdered young boys and violent wannabe killers. Another of my favourite genres.
Not so much full of red herrings but definitely swimming in murky waters.
Marvellous denouement. I didn't see it coming.
