The Goodbye Man: A Colter Shaw Novel, Book 2 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
In this twisty thriller from the New York Times best-selling master of suspense, reward-seeker Colter Shaw infiltrates a sinister cult after learning that the only way to get somebody out...is to go in.
In the wilderness of Washington State, expert tracker Colter Shaw has located two young men accused of a terrible hate crime. But when his pursuit takes a shocking and tragic turn, Shaw becomes desperate to discover what went so horribly wrong and if he is to blame.
Shaw's search for answers leads him to a shadowy organization that bills itself as a grief support group. But is it truly it a community that consoles the bereaved? Or a dangerous cult with a growing body count?
Undercover, Shaw joins the mysterious group, risking everything despite the fact that no reward is on offer. He soon finds that some people will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden...and to make sure that he or those close to him say "good-bye" forever.

I learned one thing though! Never preorder a book again simply because you like the author. I will wait and review the comments
The style he chose of giving us a scene and then going back and describing how it was set up was good, maybe a bit over used but it worked. My problem is that Deaver wrote this as if his readers are not capable of remembering what he has written. Time and again he explains something that we have read not that long ago and don’t need reminding.
My biggest complaint is not so much the writing as the editing. It seems that popular authors are not being edited well, not only here but I have seen it in, for example, the most recent Dean Koontz book. Either publishers are getting lazy, have hired incompetent editors, or are not bothering if the author is popular. In any case, when it happens it derails this reader from enjoying the book.
This one gets two stars. Not sure if I will buy another Deaver novel.
Taking place in Washington state, the action starts quickly with Colter Shaw in a rental car. Then, an unexpected event transpires and this turns into an investigation by him..The Osiris Foundation is the public name for a foundation that assists people that have excess 'baggage'. Colter spends three weeks at the foundation.
There is suspense coupled with a cult that is indeed sinister which keeps the reader more than intrigued...Going undercover always creates that idea of danger and more suspense. The element of surprise is always present. So, yes, Colter does go undercover...Take a deep breath....
This is the second novel that I have read by this author and will once again say that Mr. Deaver writes with extraordinary skill. That includes a plot with twists and turns which makes it multi-layered, characters which are well developed and a dialogue that is clear and concise. This is an intense story so buckle up your seat belt and settle in for this outstanding read.
Most highly recommended and for multlple reasons.
Toward the end of the novel, the jumping gets worse. I was particularly irritated at the supposed death of an important female character, only to have her miraculously saved several chapters later. By then, I had gotten over her death, and her incredible survival was unbelievable and unnecessary since she had no significant part to play post resurrection.
1. I already have plenty of men in my life who want to tell me all about how they perfectly handled a situation afterward.
2. When I'm reading, I want to be swept away and into the action. I want to feel like I'm there, and part of a team.
This was my first purchase of this author. I won't be returning. He's not a bad writer--the language flows, pacing is tight, characters likeable enough. I just don't like being popped out of the story like popcorn that missed the bowl. Take me along for the ride!

This time, Colter is engaged in taking down a murderous cult, using his skills as a survivalist to the full. As in previous Colter Shaw novels, there's also a sub-plot running involving the mysterious death of Colter's father.
Mr Deaver has had just a couple of 'duds' in his career but this isn't one of them; if you're a JD fan, then you won't be disappointed.
The book provides a large amount of detail which explains how Colter works and how he figures things out... this makes it so much more interesting for me. Almost like I want to head out and start trying to find missing people myself!
I love Colter as a character. He is meticulous and empathetic and really seems to care about his clients.
Looking forward to the next one!
