The Gravedigger's Son: A Charley Davidson Novella (1001 Dark Nights) Audible Audiobook – Unabridged
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Darynda Jones comes a new story in her Charley Davidson series...
The job should have been easy.
Get in. Assess the situation. Get out. But for veteran tracker Quentin Rutherford, things get sticky when the girl he’s loved since puberty shows up, conducting her own investigation into the strange occurrences of the small, New Mexico town. He knew it would be a risk coming back to the area, but he had no idea Amber Kowalski had become a bona fide PI, investigating things that go bump in the night. He shouldn’t be surprised, however. She can see through the dead as clearly as he can. The real question is, can she see through him?
But is anything that’s worth it ever easy?
To say that Amber is shocked to see her childhood crush would be the understatement of her fragile second life. One look at him tells her everything she needs to know. He’s changed. So drastically she barely recognizes him. He is savage now, a hardened - in all the right places - demon hunter, and she is simply the awkward, lovestruck girl he left behind.
But she doesn’t have time to dwell on the past. A supernatural entity has set up shop, and it’s up to them to stop it before it kills again.
While thousands of questions burn inside her, she has to put her concern over him, over what he’s become, aside for now. Because he’s about to learn one, undeniable fact: she’s changed, too.

The Gravedigger's Son has Darynda Jones' signature writing style and wit that I first discovered in the Charley Davidson series. I loved revisiting the characters and the supernatural world that she created in the earlier books. I loved Amber and Quentin and I enjoyed reading their story immensely. I would've loved it if this novella was longer. I was left wanting more! I highly recommend this 1001 Dark Nights novella, and if you haven't read any of Darynda's books, you are missing out!
The Gravedigger’s Son follows Amber and Quintin, once sweethearts and now adults, having gone their separate ways years ago. Amber has followed in her Aunt Charley’s footsteps and become a PI. Making her job easier is that she can see and communicate with ghosts, which is great when a case lands on her door to try and investigate a mysterious death. Never did she think that it would lead her to her first love and heart break, Quentin Rutherford. But one look at Quentin is all it takes to know that they boy she once loved has changed.
“How could anyone she hated so much be so startlingly drop-dead sexy? Life was not fair.”
Quentin is different from the sweet boy Amber once knew. Hardened and darker, she can see that the time apart has affected him more than he’ll say. And when she learns what happened to him and why he left, will Amber have it in her to accept him back into her life?
Quentin’s love for Amber has never faltered, but having to leave her the way he did, he knows that it would take a miracle for her to forgive him, even though he believed he did it for the right reason. When he comes face to face with her while on the hunt for a dangerous demon, will he let her in or run away again?
I enjoyed every second of this novella, as brief as it was. Quentin and Amber are two of my favorite characters and having a side story to them left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling. The more I can get in the Charley world, the happier I am and I loved this story. The pieces for Beep’s story are coming together and I am so excited for more!!
Amber Kowalski has become a PI for the paranormal. Her newest case involves helping a recently departed find out how she died. What she doesn’t expect is to run into her ex or to be dealing with demons.
This book was surprising. Quintin has changed so much since he was a teenager. He is no longer a kind, sweet guy but instead he is a rough and dangerous demon hunter. I was a bit angry at Quintin when I realized how he broke things off with Amber but once I got the full story I was ok with it. Quintin’s story was very emotional and heartbreaking. Amber really has some fascinating abilities, especially with the tarot cards, and I wish we got to see more of that.
I am a bit sad that this wasn’t longer because I really wanted to see more of their relationship, especially Quintin being grilled by her parents. Also, I really want to know more about Rune but maybe there will be another story with these two and we will get more information about him.
Overall, this was a great novella for the series. I enjoyed seeing Amber and Quintin get their second chance at love. Also I really loved Amber's ghost friend Kyle. He was a great side character.
Trigger Warnings: torture, abuse
I had originally posted a review a couple of days ago, but Amazon didn't like it, saying it didn't adhere to their guidelines. I don't know why. I posted about the book and said nothing that was illegal, immoral or wrong. I actually recommended this book.
So buy and read the book -- or not. At this point, I don't really care anymore and am seriously considering never posting another review on Amazon about anything again. I'd say that I'll never buy from Amazon again, but there are things that I can find on Amazon that I can't get other places. I just can't leave a review about what I buy.

Long time fans of the Charley Davidson series will absolutely adore this little glimpse into that world. And unlike The Graveyard Shift, this one can be read as a standalone but I will ALWAYS shout it from the rooftops if necessary, read the Charley Davidson series!!!!!
Now I need info on Beep's book and whether we'll get a series out of Amber and Quentin, or at the very least a full length novella because there's so much story to be explored there!!!
I've 'watched' Amber and Quinn grow up through the Charley books.
I saw them fall in love while learning all about the supernatural like aunt Charley, Reese and other beings.
This book is fabulous. It finally shows us what has happened from the children they were, to the adults they've become, and I loved it.
Thank you Darynda for this wonderfully written book.
