Likable characters and strong world building make this book shine. Although the basic set up is pretty standard hero’s journey, the book succeeds on a different level - it pulls the reader into a believable low fantasy world.

Depressing and crudely written!

I don't understand the good reviews! This story is very slow. The first few chapters consist of how the boy prepares a dead body in great detail. Then the story focuses on how mean and abusive his drunken father is to the boy. Next the author tells of an orphan girl who is mistreated by her ward. I kept thinking the story would get better but after reading 25% of the book I erased it from my kindle!

I picked up this series because I was hoping it would be similar to The Executioners Daughter. Even though I enjoyed that series I like these a little better they aren't as adult of content which I prefer. I think these are suitable for the 12 and up crowd.

A very enjoyable read; interesting characters and some refreshing points of view. The setting of the story is pleasantly traditional medieval. The story is fast paced. One minor word of warning though: after reading the first volume, I couldn't help myself buying the next three volumes in one go. Luckily they are not very expensive ;-)
