5.0 out of 5 starsAbsolutely Fantastic.

An absolutely fantastic movie. A huge slow burn -- you'll enjoy it if you enjoyed A24's other movies (The VVitch, Midsommar, Minari, Hereditary, etc) and appreciate fantastic cinematography, acting, and writing, but if you can't do without action, you might want to pass on this one. My boyfriend fell asleep in the first 10 minutes, but I sat enraptured for the whole duration.
For maximum viewing pleasure, I recommend:
1. Watch Mythology Unleashed's youtube video "Sir Gawain and The Green Knight" for context
2. Pay special attention to color grading -- colors are important. Not just the filters, but the color of objects, people, clothing, lighting
3. Pay attention to dialogue, and think a lot about character -- after 12 years of mandatory "English" education (if you're from the USA), you should have heard a thing or two about character development, "show, don't tell," and actions speaking louder than words. Come on! Our main character is flawed, but that makes him all the more realistic -- and what's even more interesting are the characters around him and how he interacts with them. The whole thing is so well acted and very modern (maybe a little too modern in some places, though that also makes it more engaging) -- the screenwriter put so much effort into crafting great dialogue that guides the viewer into realizing more about Gawain's character. Everyone is rooting for Gawain to show some courage -- he is just his own biggest enemy. Isn't that all of us?
4. Artistic enjoyment: besides color, take a moment to admire the amazing framing of certain shots. Look at the silhouettes, light and shadow. So many "wow" moments.

An extremely artsy movie, but if you're into that kinda stuff, this'll put you over the moon. I'll definitely be looking to purchase a hardcopy if they end up releasing one in the future!

1.0 out of 5 starsTrailer, very misleading
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2021
Trailer was very misleading. The lighting for this movie was absolutely atrocious. Couldn’t see anything 70% of the time. Just plain crap. Don’t waste your money. This movie will be free to play very, very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indie medieval movie, not an action movie

I feel like many people gave this movie a bad rating because they went in with the wrong expectations. If you expect some kind of great action or horror movie, you'll be disappointed. This is a slow artsy medieval movie that feels not too far from The Lighthouse, which is also slow and confusing. If that's your thing, then you'll love this.

If you expected an intense action-thriller starring the Slumdog Millionaire guy as Sir Hackntear, sorry.

If your favorite movie from 2019 was The Lighthouse, however, grab some chips and beer and settle in for two hours of a brooding, plodding medieval fever dream that mixes classic prose with post-modern introspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars visually stunning, meditative, mythic fable

I can't think of any mainstream movie like this one. It's artsy, for sure: lingering shots of foggy woods, minimal dialogue, entire scenes barely visible through darkness, and little distinction between dreams and reality. The pacing is deliberate, some might call it slow. But it's not boring. The premise of the film is that Gawain must meet an appointment with death. Along the way he has several adventures with varied settings and diverse characters. Not knowing exactly what will happen next keeps the film engaging, and knowledge of the inevitable conclusions ratchets up the tension even during the "side quests". And despite the artsy style and dreamlike plot, it's not a difficult film to watch or understand. It's clear what is happening literally, and the figurative meaning is usually pretty explicit as well. I also found Gawain's character relatable, as he repeatedly undermines stereotypes of knights and struggles through realistic personality flaws.

Rating: easier to enjoy than a typical arthouse film, and more beautiful and atmospheric than a typical commercial film. If you can tolerate "slow" films, give it a shot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not an action film...something much better

The Green Knight is a complicated, messy film, that, in my opinion, demands any responsible viewer rewatch it. Consider this movie a bit like the titular poem come to life; just as the poem has buried metaphors, hidden motifs, and grand moral themes, so too, does the movie baring its name have these elements. Don't expect a feel-good movie with an easy ending. Don't expect a linear narrative. Don't come looking for a "happy" ending. Instead, if you seek out ambiguous stories that will haunt you, there's a very good chance that The Green Knight is the movie you've been looking for.

Where do I begin.
This is an adaptation of an ARTHURIAN STORY. It is going to be slow.
It's themes are going to be literally around a thousand years old. This movie is about self-respect, societal dignity etc. which are all actually relatable if you just think for a moment. All narrative themes re applicable to daily life, if you're just able to read into it.
Gawain is irresponsible, young, and naive, making him easily manipulated by those in positions of authority over himself, which is probably most of you anyways. Put it together yourself, it's really that simple.
Don't overlook this movie because you just have to try a little harder.
Soundtrack is phenomenal, overall message resounds, visuals couldn't have been better for an abstracted medieval England, especially on a budget.
A 10/10, the best movie this year.

Yes it's arty. But so is the legend from which Gawain and The Green Knight came. The atmosphere, acting, direction of course, and cinematography are peerless. It's deep, let's face it. But that's what I love about it. It'
doesn't gild the lily, and thank God, no one sings "Camelot!" I love it, can't wait to obtain a hard copy!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Assassination of the Green Knight by the Coward Gawain
Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2021

Based on the fourteenth century chivalric romance, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," the cinematic version of "The Green Knight," eschews the literal and action-oriented adaptations audiences have come to expect ever since director John Boorman sent Arthur on his quest all those decades ago. Instead we get a slower-paced, surrealistic look at the legend of King Arthur's nephew, Gawain. Depending on your tastes, expectations, and mood, you'll either find the tone it strikes dreamy and graceful or maddeningly pretentious.

I had a mixed to positive impression of the movie. Its technical achievements, especially the convincing CGI and the neo-folkish soundtrack, help evoke a mythic vibe that's as disconcerting as it is enchanting, so that, like with all good fairytale films, we feel like a genuine horror movie could break out at any moment (this is an A24 release, after all).

On the surface, casting an Indian guy (Dev Patel) as Gawain seems like a deliberately obnoxious way to perform a bit of multicult retconning on a very European legend. But Patel is just too convincing as the stripling who stands in the shadows of the greater knights for me to do anything but praise his performance, regardless of what did (or didn't) motivate the film's casting decisions. All of the other actors involved play their parts ably, giving convincing performances as members of a royal caste who understand that blood must occasionally be shed in order for peace to be kept or restored. The actors who play Arthur and his lady bring especial gravity to the task, and their scene of parting at the end, when Gawain is finally knighted, is one of the most compelling in the film, if also the most understated. Recommended.
