I enjoyed this thriller/mystery. It seemed to pick up after 40%. I did guess part of the mystery. I enjoyed reading about the character's different perspectives on it.
The author could have touched on more about Helen's anxiety/lack of confidence.
I would recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood beginning, mediocre middle, poor ending.
Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2022
Debut author Katherine Faulkner offers us “Greenwich Park,” a domestic mystery involving young London professionals, the perils of maternity, and the consequences of doing nothing in the face of evil.

Helen and Daniel live in London’s upscale Greenwich Park and lead an idyllic life. Well, except that Helen lost both her parents in a car crash and has suffered four miscarriages. But all that’s behind them now. A new baby is on the way. And the maternity class Helen is attending brings a new friend, Rachel. She’s a bit of an odd duck. But Daniel is so busy with the architectural firm he runs with Helen’s brother (founded by Helen’s father) that Helen can use a new friend. So, when Rachel needs a place to stay, how can Helen say no? And that’s when Daniel’s and Helen’s life begins to go awry and everyone, readers included, starts wondering who Rachel really is, why she’s suddenly disappeared, and where she could have gone.

It’s a story comprised of elements employed by a host of past novels, books, and plays. The challenge for author Katherine Faulkner was to make this rendition somehow fresh and exciting.

The good news? Ms. Faulkner knows how to put words on a page. At the book’s beginning, I immediately felt I was in the hands of a professional. Descriptions were clear. Dialogue was natural and believable. And, initially, I was interested in the story. The characters had my attention. I enjoyed the Greenwich Park setting. And Ms. Faulkner planted many questions I wanted answers to.

But as the story progressed, my interest waned. Turns out, those characters weren’t so engaging after all. In light of all that goes on under her nose, main character Helen seems all too passive and more than just a bit dim. Husband Daniel is overworked, aloof, and cold. Her brother Rory can’t stay faithful to his wife and sloughs his work off onto others. And the only thing going for Rachel seems to be her penchant for inappropriateness and overstepping boundaries. In short, by the time I was halfway through the novel, I’d discovered there wasn’t anyone I particularly wanted to spend time with.

I also found the length and structure of “Greenwich Park” to be problematic. It’s overlong by about a quarter. By the time I was 75% of the way through I was more than ready for it to end (especially since it was turning predictable.) Also, the tale is told from multiple points of view, skipping from character to character, which I found jarring and taxing since I kept having to ask myself: “Who is this character again? What were they doing when we left them two, three, or six chapters ago?” Finally, the author waits until the very end to answer most of the questions she’s planted. To do that, she gives us two large “information dumps” meant to tell us the “real story” of what happened. In other words, Ms. Faulkner ends her novel with lots of “telling” and very little “showing.”

All in all, three stars.

I like it when I don’t have the ending figured out after the first page, or even the first chapter. These cat and mouse reads that I can finish in an addictive 2 day read are sometimes just what the doctor ordered. I did not, for the life of me have this twisty turner figured out until almost the end. But I liked the end. Without spoiling it, I love a good “comeuppance “ just as much as the next gal. The only only reason that I didn’t give it a perfect score is because I have grown just a little bit weary of the women in some of these books being just too trusting , too guileless and too gullible. I guess I am holding out for a female hero who is on to all the bad actors from page one, and makes damn sure they don’t make her the victim. The characters were also not as fleshed out in this read as I thought they should have been considering all the plotting and scheming. But all in all a very entertaining “ take my mind off the real world” read.

This thriller on 4.5 Stars from me.

SUMMARY
Helen is happily married and about to have a baby lol I’m. Unfortunately, her husband has been super busy at work and is unable to join her at their scheduled prenatal class. Her sister-in-law and brother are also about to have a baby and were supposed to attend the class with her but, also were unable to attend. The only other unattached mother, Rachel, is determined to become Helen’s new BFF. She seems to be everywhere Helen goes. It’s a little bit grating for Helen, Rachel is loud and a little rough around the edges, but, it seems all her other friends are busy and reluctantly Helen becomes friends with Rachel.

In addition to having a baby, Helen’s house is undergoing a large remodel. Everything is messy and overwhelming for Helen.

On the night of Helen and her husbands wedding anniversary, Rachel shows up at her house looking like she has been strangled. She begged Helen to let her stay with them. Helen’s husband is not happy about the situation, but Rachel says it will only be for one night. Several weeks later, Rachel is still there and Helen’s husband is gone more and more. Also, out weird things start happening. Several things have gone missing, such as Helen’s husband’s laptop. Helen finds weird things around the house. Something is clearly going on. Who is Rachel? Helen did not know her very well before she moved in and it seems that Helen’s life is spinning out of control since Rachel’s been there. Helen is determined to figure out what is going on. The more she searches, the messier things become.

WHAT I LOVED
This is a great twisty book. I never saw most of it coming.

I liked the characters. One of my favorite things was seeing similar situation through eyes of different characters. It seems Helen’s viewpoint was totally different than her husband’s viewpoint of several of the same situation’s.

The book starts out with a letter somebody is writing Helen from prison. It sort of worked backwards as to how that situation came to be. It was interesting trying to figure out who wrote that letter and why it was written.

WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE
I really liked almost everything about this book. There were a few things you just had except, like the fact that Helen would be willing to let a virtual stranger stay in her house right as she is about to give birth and not ask a ton of questions. I’m not sure I would be that nice. But, otherwise I really don’t have many complaints. Book wasn’t quite good enough to be a five star but definitely a good book and fun to read.

My goodness, I am not enjoying this book. Helen is a total pushover, I mean the weakest woman character I’ve read about in ages. The story is just driving me insane. I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish it, but I’m going to try. How in the world do awful books get such good reviews???
Update after finishing: ok, the story did have an entertaining ending, but I stand by my review. I could have been happy not reading this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars This was a solid debut and look forward to reading more from Katherine Faulkner

Katherine Faulkner’s debut novel Greenwich Park follows Helen Trope and her family (her husband Daniel, brother Rory and sister in-law Serena) as a mysterious woman, Rachel, worms her way into their lives and tries to destroy them.

Helen and Daniel are expecting their first child in a few weeks, after years of heartbreak from many miscarriages. When Helen attends her first prenatal class she meets Rachel, a young, single pregnant woman. Rachel and Helen could not be any more different. Where Helen is quiet, shy, and excited about becoming a mother, Rachel is loud, smokes and drinks and does not seem all that excited about having a baby. Despite their differences, Helen is drawn to Rachel and a fast friendship is formed. But their friendship is soon falling apart, as Rachel’s behavior becomes unsettling. After a heated argument with Helen, Rachel goes missing. As the police investigate, it becomes clear that Rachel meeting Helen was not by chance. Rachel had an ulterior motive, and she was threatening to expose secrets Helen’s family has been keeping.

While the story centered around Helen, and I did like her for the most part, her friend Kate was my favorite character. She is a reporter who is currently reporting on a rape case, and it is while she is working on this case that she discovers another rape case years ago that took place at the same college that Helen, Daniel, Rory, and Serena attended. As she digs deeper, she learns some disturbing facts about the case. I also really liked how she was there for Helen after Rachel disappeared and she even started investigating Rachel’s disappearance on her own. Kate’s digging into Rachel’s past turns up some disturbing facts and unearths secrets that Helen’s family was hoping would stay buried.

As I said, I did like Helen for the most part, but there were a few times that she annoyed me. Helen was too trusting and naïve in my opinion. There was one point in the story when Rachel showed up at Helen’s house on the night of her and Daniel’s anniversary. She was upset and looked like she had been abused so Helen let her stay the night (rightfully so), but one night turned into a couple of weeks. Rachel pretty much took over Helen’s house and all I could think of is ‘Why are you letting her walk all over you?”

I did enjoy trying to figure out what Rachel was up to. I liked the mystery about her and trying to piece things together. This book did have lots of twists I did not see coming and an ending that left me satisfied. Unfortunately though, for me the book did seem to drag at points. Despite the slow pace of the book, I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to Rachel and why she targeted Helen and her family. All in all, I thought Greenwich Park was a solid debut and look forward to reading more from Katherine Faulkner. 3 ½ stars

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting in the synopsis

Well this is frustrating... being in a book slump and reading the second "thriller" that fell flat. I guess this is the Book Universe telling me to give the thriller genre a break for right now.

This book seemed interesting in the synopsis and the beginning brought me in. Then it went downhill, for me, from there. The descriptions became a little too much for this to be categorized as a thriller. Unfortunately, I found myself bored and closing the book more than opening it.

I love the author’s style of writing...the unexpected details she offers to clarify the atmosphere, making it easy for the reader to feel a part of the setting. I like how each character was introduced and reintroduced into the unraveling plot. The final chapter was especially satisfying. I would recommend this novel to any mystery lover, but especially to women since childbearing was a major focus within the storyline.

This book keeps you guessing! Only downside IMHO was that it jumps around between characters and times- which just personally to me gets a bit confusing. Otherwise I definitely recommend!
