Praise for Gregor the Overlander:"Kids who love adventure books will find this one... hard to put down." -- The Boston Globe* "Luminous, supremely absorbing." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Collins creates a fascinating, vivid, highly original world and a superb story to go along with it, and Gregor is endearing as a caring, responsible big brother who rises triumphantly to every challenge. This is sure to be a solid hit with young fantasy fans." -- Booklist"In this accessible, almost-cinematic fantasy, Gregor and his two-year-old sister fall into an amazing underground world.... This is an engrossing adventure for fantasy fans and for those new to the genre." -- School Library Journal* "Collins does a grand job of world-building... Unlike Gregor who cannot wait to leave, readers will likely find [the Underland] to be a fantastically engaging place." -- Publishers Weekly, starred review"Cliffhanger chapter endings propel the story forward to its inevitable but nevertheless immensely satisfying conclusion, which, happily for readers, hints at more heart-pounding journeys to the center of the earth." -- The Horn Book ReviewA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING SERIESA USA TODAY BESTSELLING SERIESA BOOK SENSE BESTSELLING SERIES

SO SWEET!! I was amazed that my non-reader son would have this high interest level in ANY book! So, in my opinion (and obviously my son's) - 5 stars! My oldest passed these books on to my youngest son with instructions - he was giving them to him out of love and he must take care of them and respect them. My youngest is reading it now and is just as hooked!
I read this book back in the 6th grade on a suggestion from my school librarian. (Remember this was before Hunger Games) I was a slow reader at the time and struggled socially with other kids. When I started reading I couldn't put it down, I then got the second book, and couldn't put it down. But at the time, the series wasn't close to being finished and only two books were out at the time.
Fast forward 15 years later (I'm 25), the series always stuck with me. It actually bothered me for 15 years and I got tired of wondering what happened to the series. I couldn't remember the name and I searched for it for about 5 minutes and found the series again. I only bought the first book as I have not read a book since High School.
Needless to say, I read the book IN A DAY. It was all I could have ever hoped for and it was a lot better than I actually remember it. I will be buying the entirety of the set on my next paycheck without a doubt. I highly recommend this for everyone. Not just for kids (I would say at least 9 and up as it recommends due to the violence. Which is great for adults though.) but adults as well. This was easily one of the best story telling books of fantasy I have read in quite a long time. And I have read all of the Warcraft books, LOTR and Harry Potter. (Who hasn't read Harry Potter though?)
- Boots' acceptance of all creatures as equals. She turns out to be way more thoughtful than most of the grown ups
- Gregor's undying faith in being able to bring his Dad back to the overland is heart warming as it gives him the strength to become the unwitting warrior of the story
- Tick and Temp's courage in the face of mortal danger; they didn't run away and abandon Boots like most of the humans thought they would but instead Tick charged the rats and sacrificed herself for protecting Boots, their princess of kindness
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series as the book alludes to Gregor being back again in the Underland, as part of another prophecy.
At least we could marvel at the intricate and novel worlds...until now.
It showed much promise. i had paid zero attention to who the author was until I was already into the book by several chapters. And....it’s really a very similar plot progression to the Hunger Games, in a fantasy setting with large bugs.
Might I add, I know too much about biology? Nothing with an exoskeleton, such as a roach, can be over a certain size. They will collapse under the weight of their shells. So I was already having to work heavily to suspend my disbelief. You then add in the same rather shallow characters (again, forgiven bc it’s a kid’s book), a prophecy that tells you the plot (author REALLY NEEDS TO STOP WITH PROPHECIES), and an utterly unrealistic series of events with a progressive arc very similar to every Hunger Games book.
You are supposed to improve your writing skills with every novel. But the author has not. Disappointed.
The book was at least cheap, and killed several hours. It was well written prose. So readable if you want a different version of the same thing as Hunger Games, plus rats and bugs.

I adore The Hunger Games but I think I would say that Gregor the Overlander is even better. Simply fantastic.
