9780615856162\\“A bit of everything: adventure, melancholy, joy…common sense and pathos…. Simple language and homespun charm.” – Barbara Mojica, author. Ransom “Doc” Wilcox’s adventures began in Taber, Alberta, Canada in 1907, but he was soon whisked to the back country of Northern California where his family farmed, tended livestock, and sometimes got by via hunting and fishing—always with the horses and dogs. Once, when the hunter became the prey—of a charging wild boar—Wilcox stuck a pole he was carrying into the ground and climbed up! Another time his Australian Shepherd saved him from a mad boar. Wilcox’s love of animals, music, and the great outdoors is evident in his nature-themed tales. They convey courage, devotion, and perseverance with warmth and sincerity.

At this time the grandchildren are 2, 4 and 5. The 5 year old can read easy readers.
Because they are read to as a bedtime ritual, I introduce a variety of topics in the books we gift to keep their story time interesting.
A child will have fun with this book, not only for the fun images and learning about what they can find on a farm, but the way the words are used.
They will learn words for the foods in a fun way, through rhymes. Through the rhymes they learn poetry and alliteration while discovering different ways some words can sound than they might know already.
This should definitely be in the home, classroom or library.
With delightful rhyme and alliteration, the author not only writes about growing a kaleidoscope of colorful foods in our garden, but he puts delicious words in our mouths worth savoring and discovering. Fun book to 'plant' in your library 'garden'...and watch young minds 'grow!'

Dirt everywhere
Love this descriptive, fun to say, fun to read picture book. Great information for kids that makes everyone want to get out andddd dig in the dirt!! Karl Beckstrand’s books are fantastic for reading and reciting with kids.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
