Classic Disney that shows the NFL had a sense of humor
Verified purchase
Gus is hilarious. My two boys (12 and 9) who have grown up with special effects-laden movies and high-tech everything were laughing out loud. It features Lou Asner, Don Knotts and Tim Conway, who are hilarious together and separately with their physical comedy and facial expressions (or, in Tim's case...his deadpan expression is what's hysterical).

Side note: another recommended classic kid movie is The Apple Dumpling Game, also starring those two. But I digress.

The plot of Gus is ridiculous of course, as are the effects. But that's part of it's charm. There's a lot of funny gags all the way through and of course, a warm and fuzzy Disney-esque ending. It also features actual NFL greats that your kids will likely never have heard of, but will be fun for you to see again - Johnny Unitas, a young Dick Butkus, and more. They're obviously having a great time in the movie which makes it extra fun to watch.

They don't make kid movies quite like this anymore and that's a shame. Highly recommended for a throwback family movie night.

Silly family fun with many veteran actors and one Bear!

There are three things I love about this silly and funny movie: Don Knotts, Tim Conway and Tom Bosley. Don's facial expressions are priceless and his deadpan delivery of lines is classic. Bosley and Conway play the villainous but hapless henchman who are hired by Harold Gould and Dick Van Patten to foil the exploits of Timothy Bottoms and the titled field-goal kicking mule, Gus Petrovic. The story of a field goal kicking mule is silly but there are some funny bits in this Disney movie. This film is so 1970s in its look. from the blue screen backgrounds of NFL stadium crowds, to the silly sound effects to the now-outlandish clothes, this is a typical 1970s Disney family flick. There are some funny bits in the hospital, football stadium, hotel room, the grocery store. There is also a very cool animated scene with a cat. Finally, Ed Asner plays the role of the hapless football team (the California Atoms) with enough grump and slickness that he is beleievable; Johnny Unitas and Bob Crane play two oddball football announcers; and Dick Butkis plays a good old ornery Dick with flair and the old Chicago Bears bravado..

Makes Ed Wood look like a genius.
Verified purchase
This may be the worst film ever made. Forget Ed Wood's masterpiece "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Wood thought he was making a great film. The people who made cannot possibly have thought they were making a good film. Some really talented, very funny people are neither in this move. I show it to my high school kids on the day before April vacation. What they find funny is that this film was obviously aimed at little children but most of the actors smoke throughout the movie. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a great favor.
