Everything seemed fine until I opened the box. I was surprised to see that none of the cartridges were not individually sealed as every other HP (or any other brand for that matter) toner cart in the past. I replaced the magenta first, and instead of seeing the "genuine HP toner" on the LCD, I got an unrecognized toner cartridge. Not again!
I drove to Staples, bought the same pack there for $$$$ and yes, they were individually wrapped and the M cart was recognized by the printer. The boxes looked identical, except the date stamps on the back were different (staples having an earlier date). Looking at the cartridges, the Staples one have brighter magenta and yellow indicator rings and the plastic seems to be a slightly different texture.
I don't know if these are counterfeit, or if HP quality has taken a huge dive. Having had a Brother laser printer, and switched brands because their cartridges suddenly started leaking and going bad almost instantly, nothing would surprise me. Considering that the cost of a pack of toner cartridges (laser or inkjet) is about the same as a printer, it's almost more tempting to just buy a new printer every time I run out of toner! Probably why they're all moving to "starter" toner sets!
- Genuine HP box
- Not recognized
Yes, I probably could have just gone ahead and installed them to see how it worked - but why? The whole idea was to get genuine cartridges so the stupid printer would be happy and give me all the functionality (and color quality) I had gotten come to expect before purchasing horrible 3rd party cartridges. 1 amazon star, not remotely happy. YMMV.

Another problem here is that the cartridges are NOT individually packaged - they are open and loose inside the box. I am used to the cartridges being in sealed wrappings. There is a chance that they will dry out when shipped this way. That was a definite minus here. The convenience is the only reason I got these at Amazon. The price is about the same or less if you go to an office supply store, and they can recycle your old cartridges as well. Other than that, it's ink...

So, I'm glad to see that the one I just bought on Amazon has the expiration date in 2022, which gives me plenty of time to use it.
