Reading this book is like looking through a window into the life of a very happy family, the kind of family that I want my growing family (2 kids so far) to become. My family was awesome growing up, but there were many things that I felt could be better, and this book helped me clarify what that "better" is. I've also had friends or acquaintances who seem to have the kind of family I want, but there is only so much you can learn about another family. This book not only describes the principles of creating a happy family culture, but it also shows you what that looks like through personal experiences both of random people and Covey family members, which was extremely enlightening. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to proactively shape their family life for the better.
A few points for improvement: The whole 7 habits framework gets very confusing. He says things like "Using habits 1, 2, and 3..." and you're like, "wait. What were those habits again?" Also, the 7 habits framework is nothing special. It's just a different way of looking at true principles. I'd rather focus on the true principles than worrying about habits and names for those habits. As I read the book, I just tried to ignore the whole habits thing and focus on the true principles contained in this book, which there are many pearls of wisdom.
You won't regret reading this book from front to back!

About the Author
Dr. Stephen R. Covey is an internationally respected leadership authority, teacher, author, organizational consultant, and co-founder and vice chairman of Franklin Covey Co. He is author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which Chief Executive magazine has called the most influential business book of the last 100 years. The book has sold nearly 20 million copies, and after 20 years, still holds a place on most best-seller lists. Dr. Covey earned an MBA from Harvard and a doctorate from BYU, where he was a professor of organizational behavior. For more than 40 years, he has taught millions of people — including leaders of nations and corporations — the transforming power of the principles that govern individual and organizational effectiveness. He and his wife live in the Rocky Mountains of Utah.

Amazon.com Review
"What is 'effectiveness' in a family?" asks author Steven R. Covey. He promptly answers with four words: "a beautiful family culture." Building this culture is the primary theme of Covey's parenting guide, a manual based on concepts introduced in his blockbuster, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Covey, a New-Age business guru and leadership authority, has consulted with the world's top corporate and political leaders, but closer to home he is the father of nine children. Here, Covey reinterprets each of his now famous "habits" (Habit 1: Be Proactive, Habit 4: Think Win-Win, Habit 6: Synergize) to apply to parenting and family-life issues. Covey suggests writing a family mission statement, implementing special family times and "one-on-ones," holding regular family meetings, and making the commitment to move from "me" to "we" as techniques to improve family effectiveness. Covey is a brilliant storyteller. By weaving the voices and anecdotes of his wife and children with his own inspirational and informative stories, exercises, and parables, he has created a book with something for all parents interested in enhancing the strength and beauty of their own families. --Ericka Lutz

From Library Journal
A personal-development guru, best-selling author, and father of nine, Covey has done it again. Here he espouses the same seven habits to live by as he did in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (S. & S., 1989), but this time the focus is strictly on the family. While his message is not new, it is written with sincerity and simplicity, and even the most career-driven individual should feel passionate about family after reading this book. Covey contends that all families get off track, mostly because they don't know where the track is headed. The remedy: develop a sense of destination. As in Effective People, each chapter here explains the significance of one of the "habits," illustrated by personal stories. Chapters conclude with practical suggestions for putting the habits into action. At times hokey, at times virtuous, always thoughtful and enlightening, this book is recommended for all libraries. From AudioFile
Covey's seven habits of effective people are adapted here to families. The program works well on audio for a number of reasons. Covey's popular ideas are rooted in interpersonal wisdom; he expresses them sincerely in a concise and entertaining manner. He presents a number of useful lists and recommendations with authentic feeling and colorful examples from his own experience. Occasional live segments add variety to the studio recording. Throughout the program a tender, repeated musical theme and Covey's earnest voice offer hope to listeners seeking closer family relationships. For all these reasons, repeated listening will be useful for anyone interested in Covey's ideas. T.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

I'm familiar with the 7 habits already. This treatment doesn't bring enough new material to the topic. Of the few examples he does give, so many are the repeats from the original audio 7 habits. This is great stuff if you're not familiar, but I'd probably recommend an audio version of the original material and apply it to family life in your own mind.
That said, I did get some definite pearls of family wisdom from this version.

If you've read Covey's amazing book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, some of the material in this book will be redundant. That said, there are some great examples and advice for anyone looking to improve upon their family life.

The book is so helpful. Although I've read other versions (highly effective people, effective parents) by the same author, this comes at a time when I need to rethink how to be in a family with adult children. So calming and empowering to have this to help me think things through.

Think it's way too much in terms of some corporate culture and too little in terms of what would rea!my bind a family such as worship. Worship will do more to bind a family and drive the other habits so definitely has it backwards

This book provides great insight on how to operate as a cohesive family unit. The habits are practical but probably not practiced because of the busyness and distractions families face in this day and age. Our family started doing a weekly family night and really re-evaluated those things that were keeping us busy and from connecting.

It's still a great listen even though it's not the same as the book. It's more like a paraphrase with a little more here and there and less than the book.

It’s a very beneficial book that is full of anecdotes and inside stories that really digs deep into the very essence of the family ties rather than just tackling it from the surface.
In a nutshell it shows how to apply the 7 habits at home. Highly recommended. I read it three times!

Really good, helpful for all types of families

Very useful, practical tips for families. Especially liked the concentration on empathic listening - couldn't rate that highly enough. This is a very in-depth book, it's pretty thick - very comprehensive. It is a little repetitive, as are all these American self-help books, but in this instance, it didn't annoy me as much as with other books such as those by Tony Robbins. The examples are all really helpful, so I actually felt like I wanted more of them and less repetitive explanations.

This book was actually purchased by mistake but what a happy mistake it was! I wanted to purchase the author's classic and well-known book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" but instead got this and it was an excellent book, which quite literally everyone should read.

I am slowly getting through it. It was written some time ago and by an American! However, still applicable today and not so American it can't be brought across the pond. Some sound, simple advice and lots of good examples to see how the advice can be played out in different scenarios. As ever, a different matter trying to implement the advice!

Stephen Covey is a must read for anyone who really wants to get to the bottom of what it is, to be really effective in a family, as a family. read it over and over and let it sink in and become part of your subconscious - it's all good.
