Not even a little Halo
-You see the Chiefs face
-Captain Keyes doesn't act like Captain Keyes (yes he is a different race but no that's not what I'm talking about)
-They clearly didn't care about the original Halo story at all
-I bet it's really good if you don't know or care about Halo at all which is a weird way to approach a show.

20 years of lore tossed to the wind.
You guys had so much source material that you clearly did not care about. Screw the fan base right? Madrigal was glasses shortly after Harvest so even the time line is crap. You made up Spartans. Had the wrong armor. The MkVI doest exist until the game Halo2 which is after Reach is glassed. Master Chief removes his freaking helmet. Master Chief leads Spartan blue team Linda, Kelly, Fred and before dieing heroically Sam. As a huge fan of the games and books it is hard for me to watch your studio crap all over a franchise.

If you accept that isn't Halo Canon, and just watch it, its great!
I have been playing Halo for decades and I realize this isn't sticking to Halo canon, but if you just watch it as a spinoff show in the Halo universe with great characters and a smart exciting plot with amazing action and grounded motivations, I don't know how they could have done better! Even master chief taking off his helmet makes sense in context, I thought it was going to be terrible and I am walking away pleasantly surprised.

Not bad for a first episode
I think they shot their load to quickly with the Master Chief reveal but other than that I think the show has real potential. I would love to see what Paramount can do with this series.

Why do so many shows these days violate cannon?
Star Trek and now the HALO TV series are violating cannon wantonly. The old Judge Dredd did it but that was made up quite well by the recent remake. If a character's face is never revealed (HALO & Judge Dredd) then don't show it now. Not showing a character's face allows it to remain more of a symbol. When covered anyone can be Master Chief (guys anyway). As this is a HALO review I'll avoid the minor Trek rant I'd easily go off on.
The writing and actor performance is wanting. I've watched the previous movies both CGI and with real life actors. Practically all of them surpass this poor attempt to live off of previous successful movies. I never could get into the book series myself.
Maybe the point of this show is to anger the following the series has so when they pump out a movie they actually try to do well it pull in even more cash. IDK

Possibly one of the worst story hack jobs I've seen in a long time
It's like they didn't even try. A Human working with the Covenant, under the care of the Prophet of Truth, the most anti-human of the prophets? John taking his helmet off within the first episode to, what, make some sort of emotional connection with audience? John expressing more human emotion when he didn't develop emotionally as a character until Cortana came into the picture. Very well documented characters having their being and backstories rewritten. Keyes is seemingly relegated to a UNSC base on Reach, when at this time he should be out fighting the Covenant. Heck, he shouldn't even be a Captain yet as he was promoted just days before the Fall of Reach.

None of these characters act like they should. Miranda is supposed to be the child of a mother who overprotected her and attempted to stall her military career with a bad posting but still got into the heat of battle. Not working on Reach as a scientist.

They slapped on the names and want you to just accept it. Where's the sense of impending doom? Why haven't we seen the Covenant glassing multiple worlds? Halo is at its core a story about humanity backed into a corner struggling against extinction. There's none of that here.
