Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales, a literary genre he so mastered that he himself has become as mythical as the tales he wrote. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories—called eventyrs, or "fantastic tales"—express themes that transcend age and nationality.
During his lifetime he was acclaimed for having delighted children worldwide and was feted by royalty. ¡Una lectura imprescindible para los niños de hoy y de siempre!
Over a century after its first publication, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid persists as one of the world’s most enduring works of fantasy for children.
This edition combines the world-famous translation of H.B. Paull with two sets of classic illustrations, the engravings of Vilhelm Pedersen from the original Danish edition and Helen Stratton’s illustrations from the first English edition of The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Both sets provide a beautiful and dramatic visual compliment to this haunting and inexpressibly moving tale of love.
Also included are notes with pronunciations and definitions of some words that may be unfamiliar to grade school readers.

Writing in the midst of a Europe-wide rebirth of national literature, Anderson broke new ground with his fairy tales in two important ways. First, he composed them in the vernacular, mimicking the language he used in telling them to children aloud. Second, he set his tales in his own land and time, giving rise to his loving descriptions of the Danish countryside. In contrast to such folklorists as the Brothers Grimm, Anderson’s tales are grounded in the real and often focus on the significance of small or overlooked things.
Here are all of Andersen’s collected tales, many—such as "The Little Mermaid,” "The Red Shoes,” and "The Steadfast Tin Soldier”—still popular through modern adaptations, and others, including "The Flying Trunk” and "The Most Incredible Thing,” well worth rediscovering.

125 of the most famous, classic fairy tales.
Includes The Ugly Duckling, The Toad, The Emperor's New Suit, The Ice Maiden, Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, and many, many more.
Illustrated by the beloved creator of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Little House, and Katy and the Big Snow, this is a delightful version of the tale that boys and girls have loved for centuries. The Emperor himself, his court, and his clothes—or lack of them—are as outrageous and comical as only the master storyteller Hans Christian Andersen can make them, and Virginia Lee Burton adds to this tale of fun her own irrepressible humor in pictures and design.
This lovely new Folk Tale Classics edition celebrates Burton’s lively concoction of remarkable spirit and beauty.
A richly entertaining and informative collection of Hans Christian Andersen's stories, annotated by one of America's leading folklore scholars.
In her most ambitious annotated work to date, Maria Tatar celebrates the stories told by Denmark's "perfect wizard" and re-envisions Hans Christian Andersen as a writer who casts his spell on both children and adults. Andersen's most beloved tales, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Little Mermaid," are now joined by "The Shadow" and "Story of a Mother," mature stories that reveal his literary range and depth. Tatar captures the tales' unrivaled dramatic and visual power, showing exactly how Andersen became one of the world's ten most translated authors, along with Shakespeare, Dickens, and Marx. Lushly illustrated with more than one hundred fifty rare images, many in full color, by artists such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen will captivate readers with annotations that explore the rich social and cultural dimensions of the nineteenth century and construct a compelling portrait of a writer whose stories still fascinate us today.
Few works of children’s literature have had as deep and lasting an impact as Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, which has won the hearts of young readers for almost two centuries, and inspired works as diverse as Disney’s Frozen and C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
This version combines the classic English translation of H.B. Paull with the dramatic and beautiful engravings of Vilhelm Pedersen from the original, Danish edition.
