Nine years of tranquility came to an abrupt end when a Méridien starship entered the Hellébore system, sounding a dire warning for Alex Racine, the Haraken president. Unwanted visitors had arrived again. But this time, they’re not alien; they’re human.

Alex Racine journeys to Méridien to investigate and uncover the Earthers’ intentions. In the Haraken world, SADEs (self-aware digital entities) have been freed from their boxes aboard the Méridien-built starships. The mobile SADEs are powerful players in Alex’s strategies, inventing ingenious methods to investigate the Earthers and their ship.

Complicating matters, the Méridien leadership is in turmoil. The Council Leader insists her people ignore the Earthers, but this path has costs.

As tensions escalate, García sends a request for support to his superiors back on Earth, lest his discovery of the rich, Méridien worlds, boasting unbelievable advanced technology, slip through his grasp. A UE battleship heeds the call, escalating the pressure for action. Join the journey as the Harakens and Méridiens work together to protect their planets and their way of life from the newest invaders.

From my early years to the present, books have been a refuge. They’ve fueled my imagination. I’ve traveled to faraway places and met aliens with Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, Herbert, and Le Guin. I’ve explored historical events with Michener and Clavell, and I played spy with Ludlum and Fleming.

There’s no doubt that the early sci-fi masters influenced the writing of my first two series, The Silver Ships and Pyreans. I crafted my stories to give readers intimate views of my characters, who wrestle with the challenges of living in space and inhabiting alien worlds.

Life is rarely easy for my characters, who encounter aliens and calamities, but they persist and flourish. I revel in examining humankind’s will to survive. Not everyone plays fair or exhibits concern for their fellow beings, but that’s another aspect of humans and aliens that I investigate.

My stories offer hope for humans today about what they might accomplish tomorrow far from our home world. Throughout my books, humans exhibit a will to persevere, without detriment to the vast majority of others.

Excellent story with an mostly unbelievable hero. But SciFi has always been that way since Lazarus Long, and Michael. I started reading ScFi at about 9 years old in 1952. If you are planning to read this, make sure you read, at least the first 2 books. Otherwise you will be lost and confused as a nun hipped alien.

Following the trails of their colonial ships of 1000 years ago, an “explorer” ship arrives at Meridien, heavily armed and ready for conquest. Fortunately, Mahima Ganesh’s recalcitrance towards outsiders gives Alex time to place Haraken forces in the way. Unfortunately, their invasion rebuffed, the Earthers split to take New Terra and Haraken thanks to Ganesh’s betrayal. Fortune favored the bold, but one ship returned to Earth with a tale of woe. Now Alex and Renee will be heading to Earth. Can they convince Earth it’s a bad idea to take them on, or will Alex suddenly rule another solar system?

Good book, with a better sequel

So this is the first book I have any issue with in this series. And it's mostly because the first lesbian we get, Samara, is creepy and almost definitely a predator. Also, the pretty obvious sexual exploitation of women in the UE for career advancement is super messed up. While I don't like Wombo's assistant or Samara, I definitely feel disgusted that they've found sleeping with others to be necessary for their advancement, and would sincerely hope that after Sol, it's not something that's common in the UE anymore. Because eugh, reading about the way the Major treated Wombo's assistant made me feel sick. I've rarely been so happy to see a character die as I was with the Major.

I did otherwise enjoy this book, and was excited to see it continue into Sol.

Also, a minor warning to lgbt readers, as far as I can tell, lesbians have only appeared as villains in this series - though they don't show up till starting in the fourth book. There's a few characters who might be bisexual but I'm really not sure. Jucha, please give me some lesbians who aren't totally creepy and predatory the way Samara and Lacey are. If you wanted to confirm Deirdre and Svetlana as a couple you'd officially catapult this series into my favorites.

EDIT: I emailed the author about it a while back and he hadn't done this intentionally, and has plans to have more balanced representation in the future. So I'm excited for that!

Loved the first three books, and Harakan is the perfect addition to the storyline

I will start by saying I read and loved the first 3 books in the series, and didn't know more books were out in the series. As soon as I did I bought all three right away and have been flying through them, Huge fan of the characters, and this book was perfect in that it picked up 9 years after the 3rd book ended. As a result we got a glimpse into life on Haraken and how the characters have evolved, especially the SADE's. I won't give any spoilers about the challenges faced in this book, other than I really liked the idea, and thought it was very clever and fun to read. Had a lot of fun with all the characters, especially in the fête scene. Also enjoyed the new characters, both the antagonists and the some of the new friends.

If you like good character driven sci-fi, I think you will like this book. It's very entertaining, and I think humorous when you get to know the players. Author also does a good job setting various scenes, in other words I think the author does a great job explaining, without over explaining ideas - making them easy for the reader to visualize and understand.

Finished this book yesterday, already 75% through book 5 - Sol.

I'm finding enough interest in each book (I'm up to #4) to keep on going so I feel obliged to give it a reasonable rating. So far, the books seems to follow a formula of a dangerous threat to 'good' planets, and it's the MC and his people (including aliens) to the rescue and these stories are inventive. However there are sexist annoyances. Firstly, the key relationships are strictly hetero - this may change in successive books in the series. Secondly, although the author gives women equally heroic roles - e.g. they are strategists, fighters etc., if they fall in love with a 'strong' man they become a cross between coy, adoring sex kittens/mothers whose role is to keep their man healthy. These women 'giggle self-consciously', 'squeal', 'gaze adoringly up at their man', 'scamper' and on it goes. It's teeth-grinding stuff. I admit I'm hooked into these books because of the story-telling but it's getting harder to push on.

I can't thank Scott Jucha enough for focusing on the redeeming qualities of sentient beings, and the redemption of so many through the humble and unceasing drive of an extraordinary man, and the increasing collection of remarkable individuals who follow him. I have read negative reviews that such altruistic characters and societies are implausible at best. I counter this argument by saying I personally know a few people similar to Alex and the Omnians, and it is these kinds of humble leaders who change the world a single person at a time. It is far easier to do nothing and complain that it is to actually lift those around you, even if only through simple kindness.

This is an outstanding follow-up story for the characters who defeated the Silver Ships. This plot line is a prime example of why I love Science Fiction- it is an allegory for our current times, showing the best and worst of humanity. The story provides examples of all dimensions of our political arena. We have no shortage of thugs and despots who wish to take control of everything. We have leaders whose judgement is clouded by past personal events. We have great leaders (at times) whose integrity and devotion to right have saved our world many times. We have leaders who do not have a clue, and do not understand the history occurring around us.
Mr. Jucha is one of my favorite authors. I would suggest making Haraken, Sol, and any related following books a subset of the Silver Ships saga (perhaps a Haraken trilogy), unless he plans for the Silver Ships to return.
Thanks for not delving into sex relationships too intimately.

So almost giving up it wasn't until a third in that I really got to grips and became hooked in the story. Glad I persevered and now just can't wait to read the follow-up, Sol.

For readers wanting a similar (although not necessarily space orientated), do check out Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive), Dark Space and Imhotep. All three series are at this (top) level. Recommendations as to what to read next would be appreciated!

Well I seem to be another person that felt they could not put the book down and had to finish to find what happens on the day of the book's release. I like the ideas and importantly for me - that the writing triggers alternate story lines in my mind. Looking forward to Sol. I have read several books from other authors and while I have enjoyed them this has maybe a more optimistic feel. The last books series I enjoyed to this level were the Hugh Howey silo series books - very different world - but for me equally hard to put down.
