But there are a few REALLY great songs like Scenario and It's Tricky and of course no one's going to like all the songs included, the real problem is that within an hour of playing it, you'll really be wanting more cards, and they're pretty expensive, and when you look at the sets, they all have some real winners and some real duds, song-wise, and parts of the same songs are mixed between decks.
It's pretty great, but if a friend already has it, don't buy another one, they'll be happy to lend it to you a couple weeks after they get it, especially if you offer to buy some more cards.
Real simply you have a bunch of cards that contain parts of popular songs. For example one card might be a drum beat from RUN DMC "It's Tricky" another card might be the horn section from Cake's "Short Skirt Long Jacket" another might be vocals from an Ed Sheeran song. Lay the cards on the tray and they make a song. Lay cards on top of a card already down and it overrides that card always playing the music from top card. It works surprisingly fast and flawless.
The set includes 60 music cards that are similar to a trading card like Pokemon. Out of the 60 we had one that simply did not work and one was missing. I did not feel like returning the whole kit at the time as we were having so much fun with it and they were sold out to send me a new one. Now it is simply too late and I forever will be two cards short. We bought a whole bunch of additional sets of add on cards and they have all been accounted for and worked.
This can be operated in freestyle mode or played as a game against other people.
The freestyle mode is awesome. You simply lay down cards making songs. The tone and BPM can be changed. Mixes you really like can be saved and shared. Something really satisfying about finding the perfect drum beat or guitar riff to go along with the song you are building.
Honestly, the actual game is not very fun in my opinion. We have played it multiple times but just have more fun in the freestyle mode. This kind of hurts the overall product as nobody really has any interest in using this as a competitive game. The freestyle mode is tons of fun at first but it kind of gets played out until you buy new cards to try.
Overall I am happy with the purchase and do not regret owning it.

However the cards came very bent, (you can see in my picture, that is after I attempted to straighten them out as best I could) looked as they were almost damp previously and no desiccant was in the box so that’s very likely. You can’t straighten them out either because they have a chip inside of them. Quite unfortunate for someone OCD like me. Also sucks the box has 0 room for further additional cards, seems like a major oversight for something that sells many additional add on packs....? I guess that’s what you get for buying Hasbro games rather than proper developers like Days of Wonder and Cool Mini
Gripe #1 : The discovery packs come with the same groups of 5 cards (they are NOT random) and there are 6 types in a season. These are unlabelled and can only be differentiated by the small picture on the front window. Online purchases are 'randomly selected' (so duplicates are almost guaranteed) and no-one hardly stocks them in America let alone anywhere else.
Gripe #2 : There are also several pre-defined Playmix packs available but the powers at be made 3 of them exclusive to certain retailers and if you are a completionist such as me then you will be very hard pushed to find them. Chiller for example is only 6 months old and it has vanished off the face of the planet. Flawless has become EOL from Target America so is also super expensive and Toys R Us have imploded with their Exclusive 'Bomb' Playlist.
Gripe #3 : They also made a handful of cool promo cards which were only available to those that were able to make certain Expo shows in the US. And you guessed it scalpers are now selling them on Ebay for $50-$100 per card!! Not fair on anyone who cant afford to go or lives overseas. Really bugs me.
Gripe #4 : The game modes do have some strategy in terms of card placement but could do with a little more thought. I was thinking something as simple as placing the card down at the right moment so it loops at the right moment for extra points.
Gripe #5 : The cards have a poor matt coating on them so they will look shabby quite quickly if you are not careful. I strongly advise you sleeve them immediately (and they still work fine even when stacked 6+ high)
So in summary, Such a great concept and starter set. Distribution and Marketing disaster especially if you are outside of the US. My quest for the complete set continues and I really hope they re-run the rare cards or re-launch the game better outside of the US as few people have even heard of it. So... 3 Stars for now, 4 stars if they re-release the rare cards and 5 stars if they improve the game modes a little more! If you are reading this though, please go ahead and buy the starter pack to support the guys at Harmonix / Hasbro. Thanks for reading!
The base game also feels pretty spartan, I guess because they want you to go forth and buy new cards.
