But after several people flee his historic mansion, claiming to have seen a menacing spirit, Matt calls in Harrison Investigations. From the moment he lays eyes on psychic Darcy Tremayne, a former make-up model turned paranormal investigator, he treats her like dirt; indeed, Matt's redeeming qualities are few. Nevertheless, Darcy doesn't let his hostility disrupt her investigation or her burgeoning attraction to him. Despite the overblown imagery Graham (Night Heat; The Awakening) uses when Darcy and Matt are together ("the energy within her [was] a lightning storm that catapulted around him"), their intimacy feels contrived and superficial, largely because the protagonists themselves are one-dimensional. It's never clear how or why Darcy can sense things about people and ghosts; she just can-when it's convenient. Graham uses italics for Darcy's ghostly visions as well as for characters' thoughts, which may confuse some readers. Most, however, will be simply baffled by this established author's substandard effort.

Good Ghostly Mystery - Poorly Developed Romance

Well, I liked this book for the most part, if you exclude the romance. The mystery and ghosts were chilling at times, yet always intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked the hero and heroine, and all of the side characters as well. I actually thought I had the puzzle involving the ghostly woman in white figured out about two-thirds of the way through, but as it turned out I was wrong. The killer wasn't a huge surprise as I suspected it could only be one of two people, but I was never for sure which one. Overall the suspense was well done and I enjoyed myself immensely in that aspect...

My problem was solely with the romance which was not believable at all. I liked Matt and Darcy as people, but definitely not as a couple. She mistrusts him much too often, and he repeatedly calls her "creepy" and other unkind names. In all honestly these two would never make it. Then there were the sex scenes which I rushed through and thought were just plain weird. I have no idea how else to explain than to say they were way too "wordy" with one adjective after another and boring to boot. Of course they're in love at the end but I imagine Matt will be having another divorce on his hands soon...

In the end if you decide to read this story I would do so for the mystery and paranormal factors which were thrilling and unpredictable but I wouldn't recommend it as a romance since it seemed rushed, contrived and totally unbelievable to me. Overall I'd rate the suspense as 4-5 stars and the romance as 1-2, which is why I gave it 3 stars overall.

As far as the story line goes, it was very interesting. BUT, it was too lovey dovey to be realistic. I simply skipped over it after the first episode and found the story very readable. I was surprised at the ending and it was a quick read. I agree with a previous reviewer about the love portions of the story. Completely unbelievable. For both parties to have such doubts about each other - him that she was crazy and her that he was a killer and then to end up married. It doesn't seem like love, it seems like pure lust. The story would have been a 5 star if you cut out all that phony love business.

I really like Heather Graham's books. I have read many and typically can't put them down. So overall, I enjoy her story telling. The sex scenes are pretty much all the same vanilla descriptions. Tend not to be very exciting. So I tend to skim through those because they are all the same. She does have a formula for her books that don't vary much but like I said, I keep reading them. I love the ghost story aspect of them and some of the history. Not sure how accurate some of that history is since it is evident that these books appear to be written fairly quickly (it's the formula thing). I can't say I am too impressed with the publisher, they need to hire good proof readers. When the chapter shifts characters there should be some spacing between said shifts. You are reading along and then realize the character has shifted. Can be distracting. This gives the impression that the publishers are more interested in cranking out volume rather than a readable, enjoyable book. I'm no expert at grammar and publishing but typos and things like not spacing between shifts in perspective tend to be distracting.

Heather Graham is a master of mystery, and she can make you believe that ghosts are a normal part of everyday life. I couldn't put this book down. Besides being a great mystery, it was a great love story and a great example of friendship that goes deep into the soul. I can't wait to read another of her books, but you have to wait, because they leave a story that has to be absorbed before you can delve into another book. I lived this book as it happened. Ms. Graham, I nominate you for the mystery hall of fame. Great book!!

It's been over 30 years since I've read a romance and now I remember why I don't. I thought maybe the ghost story would be strong enough to make it worthwhile but it wasn't. I guessed the killer in the first third of the book and found the remainder repetitive and boring, and very slow paced. Not my cup of tea.

I loved this book and it's mystery. But I didn't like the main male character. He was so negative and mean and closed off. He was that way till the very last page of the book when he finally accepted the the main female character wasnt a lying fake, and then admitted his love...??? They were in love? sorry, but no. Lust? Yes. Infatuation? Sure. But love? No. She accused him of murder and he accused her of a great number of.things but ON THE LAST.PAGE, THEIR IN LOVE? god. I'm a little disappointed, it's so cliche. BUUUT, aside from the "romance" the story was great.

This book is the beginning of a great series. The first 9 books are Harrison Investigations. Then it becomes The Krewe of Hunters. I've read this series , at this point, 4 times. I'll probably read it again. No matter how many times I've read them, they are just as engaging as the first. If you are intrigued by the paranormal, you will really enjoy these books.

Darcy is called in to investigate a possible haunting at Melody House, when she arrives she finds the owner is not open to the idea that his home is haunted. However this investigation soon becomes more than looking for a simple ghost.
I loved this story, the characters are real with an assortment of personalities. The mystery was great, it kept me guessing and threw a few unexpected surprises in. It kept me turning the pages wondering what was going to happen next.
I will continue on with this series.

I think this book is well written but I have only given it 3 stars because it is not to my taste. The romance has a dream-like quality that (I believe) is typical of "low brow" women's fiction. There is nothing wrong with that per se, it is just not for me - I'm more kind of "earthy" rather than "dreamy".
