She wakes up alone in a dark house. She has no memory, no idea who she is or where she came from. Blood runs from a wound on one side of her head. She hears strange sounds coming from one of the rooms upstairs. She still doesn't remember anything, but she's starting to realize the awful truth.

She's trapped inside a haunted house.

Not even knowing her own name, the woman starts searching for clues. The strange sounds continue. Is she truly alone, or are there others in the house? And if there are others, are they friend or foe? After making her first shocking discovery, the woman begins to fear the worst. Time is running out. The doors and windows are sealed shut. Nothing makes sense, but a grandfather clock in the hallway seems to offer clues.

Who is this woman? What was she doing in the house before she lost her memory? And even if she remembers in time, will she be able to stop the evil that lurks in the shadows?

I think I like this one, but I can certainly see why some have rated it 2-3 stars, and why others have rated it 4-5.

Although the lead character, a middle-aged woman with Amnesia (name is revealed in the story) was likeable, the rest of the cast of characters didn't seem to have that much impact on the story. In all honesty, they didn't really *do* anything to move the plot along, besides making some really stupid decisions that ultimately did not come to fruition.

The twist was easy to figure out, towards the end, though some may still not be able to see it coming.

The ending just seemed to be haphazard and not very well written. A lot of things weren't explained at all, including how one of the characters knew the entity, who that other woman was, and etc.

It was a great one-time read, as Amy Cross is always worth a read, but readers will be forgiven for finding this book one of her strongest, and one of her weakest entries.

This was an interesting book. It was a good one for people who enjoy paranormal reads but don't like feeling scared or creeped out at all. It has mild gore but not really even a lot of that. Without giving away spoilers, I liked the twist with Cynthia. It wasn't expected and was a new concept that made the book more interesting than it probably would have been otherwise. It wasn't a favorite but it was a nice and quick, easy, fun read. The ending felt a bit rushed but it made sense to have it that way so it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. It was kind of left at a point where she could continue the story with a second book or leave it be as it is.

First, I've read several of Ms. Cross' books. They have generally proven to be entertaining, quick reads.

This one, however, seemed rushed at best. Character development was non-existent so the reader has absolutely no care for what happens to them. The plot had some promise but was too large in scope for the space into which it was crammed. There was nothing eerie or thought provoking. Granted, I read a lot of horror, but literally nothing about this book stuck out to me except how incomplete it felt.

Try one of her other titles first. Quist House is a miss.

Amy Cross is a masterful writer. Quist House keeps you guessing from page one till the final paragraph. There were so many twists and turns that there were a fee nights I read an extra hour before going to bed. Great author, great characters, great read. You won't be disappointed.

It was OK, and any Amy Cross is better than none, but it didn't really engage me. It starts off with a middle-aged woman - whom we eventually find out is called Rebecca - who wakes up in a strange, boarded-up house, suffering from amnesia. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or why she is there. And to make matters worse, upstairs she finds the murdered body of a priest. This all sounds like a good start for a horror story. In theory. But I found it all a bit disorientating. Sharing Rebecca's amnesia gave it all a dreamlike feel, sort of discombobulating (great word). WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS - Then we get Jonathan, a bratty man. And Cynthia, a bratty girl. And then Ixaal, a bratty demon. On top of all that, waiting outside is Rose, a rather nondescript, slightly bratty girl, whom we are told is absolutely essential for the demon's needs, although frankly it's hard to see why! There are long periods of just talking, particularly when Cynthia is having a long monologue with herself in the downstairs loo, and some fairly typical Amy-ish cartoon violence. We are constantly told that Rebecca is a genius with an awesome mind, but - and even allowing for the fact that she's suffering from amnesia - this all takes some believing, as she doesn't seem capable of doing anything very much, and she rather wimpishly takes far too much flak from Jonathan for any self-respecting intelligent middle-aged woman. It all has a bit of a teenage horror film vibe to it. There are still some great Amy Cross touches, such as decent plot twists, and the story generally romps along, but the cardboard characters all left me feeling a bit "meh".

The plot was good but, the telling left a lot to be desired. It was a haunted house story with a difference, part "The Exorcist" and part "The Mummy ". It started out well but fell flat toards the end. A real pity but, still worth a read.
