5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing read that truly causes you to lose track of time!

When I first picked up this book, I thought “eh, why not?” Little did I know that I would be staying up way past 3 am just for one more page. The stride of a good book is when you never know what time it is but fail to really care...

This story was interesting in that we had the typical portal fantasy guy pulled over into another dimension. What happens after is often dark but humorous romp through a fantastical world that leaves you asking more questions than you would expect. I found myself randomly laughing out loud at certain points and other times sitting on the edge of the couch literally about to fall off as the sometimes the action got so intense.

My only detraction would be for the random love interest. One minute we see his first meet with our lovely lady, the next they are in full on relationship. Would have been nice to seen how rather than get “Oh, so that happened...”.

This book was awesome read, long in page count and full of characters unique enough that I honestly had to just write several paragraphs worth of a review. If nothing else, pick this up and follow this crazy Aussie for the laughs and thrills, I know I’ll be getting the second book the moment it hits the market.

Litrpg elements are well done once it gets moving but nothing original. However, preachy is an understatement for roughly 15% of the book. I bought the book to unwind with fantasy entertainment, not read the author "debate" himself on socioeconomic dogmas and those stupid faithful..which I'm atheist myself. Couldn't make it past 75% when yet another soap box moment started. If you like progressive echo chambers, this is the book for you. I'm all for healthy debate, but it all comes off as smug and masturbatory when your writing both ends...in a fiction fantasy book.

I don’t say that lightly. That was an amazing read.

I laughed out loud more than once.

Cultivation adjacent, but definitely more towards the LitRPG side. Not very crunchy, but a very interesting skill tree setup.

The was originally written as a serial and it does show occasionally in repeated descriptions between chapters. Still easily worth reading.

A few minor typos. Given the sheer size of the novel, it’s hardly worth noting.

Worth every penny and then some. This is what LitRPG should be.

This series is one I have greatly enjoyed, enough for me to support the author on Patreon. This is a fun time of a lit rpg/progression fantasy. A young man from Earth find himself on another world, inadvertently summoned there by cultists. Now Jason must survive and thrive.

Every weekday, I look forward to reading by the next chapter in this epic story. I'm at chapter 664 and I'm looking forward to re-reading the early adventures of Jason with his just the right amount of snark.

Smart-arsed, sarcastic, quippy humor. What more could you ask for? How about an awesome magic system. A fully realized and fantastic magic world. Some of the best supporting characters ever. And, a hero who is in equal measure; a giant d-bag, a loyal friend, a terrifying enemy, and pop-culture loving goof. The evil magic powers are cool, too.

This is just an all around great book. The characters, the world building, the story's pacing, etc., it's just top notch. I've been following this story via Royal Road, then Patreon, for about 18 months now and the quality of the author's work has remained incredibly consistent from start to finish.

I would be quite surprised if anyone who purchased this book didn't enjoy it at least as much as I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoy the Series

LITRPG - main character goes to another world. Read more than a few of those, but the author does a great job bringing forward certain aspects that are usually ignored or glossed over. Like how would a normal person react when they suddenly find themselves naked in a hedge maze and eventually end up in a fight for your life against a cannibal. If you didn't notice by the title it also delves into how a person changes when they have to kill people and were they draw the line.

Great series so far and I really like the book size.

5.0 out of 5 stars LitRPG at its finest!

Someone recently asked me to recommend a new book, and this was the first one that came to mind. She hadn't read any LitRPG's before, and honestly I could not think of any better book to start her off with.

The best thing about this series is the MC. His antics and attitude are what make the series. Sure, he has animosity towards religion and oppressive politics, and sometimes goes overboard making that known, but still....it's his snappy reactions and snark, which make up most of it, that make this so great. Imagine you're about to be killed by the overpowered leader of a cult, and instead of cowering in fear, you start a discussion on how non-villainy his name sounds, and how the group really should have picked someone with a better name so as to keep up their image. .....and that's just one tiny example of our beloved, snarky, MC.

I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond epic! Take a chance and read it!

Holy cow, WOW! I don't even know how to describe this book other than it is beyond epic. Seriously, as soon as I finished it on KindleUnlimited, I purchased it, so I'd have my own copy for when I want to reread it (and I KNOW I'll want to reread it lots because I always reread books that I loved reading the first time) and then pre-ordered the second book which will be released a little over a month from now and then sought out the author on Patreon and became a supporter because this person has to keep writing! As you may be able to tell, I became a little crazed... but I don't regret it! Man, I'm so excited that the 2nd book will be released so soon!

There is so much that happens that I'd never be able to do justice to the journey that Jason goes on in search of finding his place in this world of magic he's been pulled into. Yeah, he's a bit (or a lot) arrogant in regards to his beliefs versus this new world's (ex: the manifest gods or the nobles being due respect/obedience) But it's obvious he's been brought in to shake things up, introduce new ideas, prod others out of complacency, etc. And in watching his evolution into an Adventurer we delve a bit into ideals vs reality (ex: in the beginning he is contemptuous of anyone who kills wrongdoers with little to no remorse - but by the end he's become just that sort of person - which of course then provokes thoughts into if he likes the person he's becoming)

The world building is just amazing, it's obvious that a lot of thought has gone into everything from the different gods, the types of magic and how they can be mixed together to provide a wide variety of talents, the various races.... just everything! Can not say it enough, take a chance, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable!

I've always been enamored with the LitRPG genre but I've struggled to find ones that I enjoy. He Who Fights Monsters caught me before the sample was up and I couldn't put it down (literally finished it within 48 hours). Some of the key points-

-MC is definitely strong, but not stupidly OP.
-It isn't all about the fighting- there are fights, but it's also a lot about life etc.
-It doesn't get super bogged down in the mechanics. Majority of the mechanics are done narratively rather than tables and graphics, with some tool tip-esque iterations
-I actually like the MC. He can be a bit preachy but all in all he's a pretty likeable aussie dude. His snark kinda reminds me of Harry Dresden. Not on Dresden's level but solid effort.

-On the negative, the MC can be REALLY preachy. Some of the convo's feel a little forced; not something you'd run into in real life.
-He also makes some astonishing intuitive leaps that feel a bit unrealistic
-Pacing can be a bit odd, but I think that's due to the fact that it was an online serial story before it was a book.

All in all, if you're a pedantic individual looking for a literary masterpiece. . . this probably isn't for you. However, if you're just looking for a gripping escape into a parallel world of magic . . . buckle up.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best new GameLit series to come out, books 1-5 review

This is a well written fantasy/gamelist/litrpg adventure, its long, the books are extensive. The story is well paced and the characters are very entertaining. I very much enjoy this series, for the last two nights I was up till 4am and then 3am last night to finish book 5, I have to work at 8am so this was pretty stupid but I could not put the book down. I am not going to give any spoilers on this series, this is not one of those "the group of young heroes walks off into unimaginable danger, defeats an unbeatable foe and everyone goes home basically unharmed to live happily ever after", there are main character deaths and things do not always work out, that is what makes it good. This is currently my favorite series that I have read in the past 5 years and I average over 50 books a year (per goodreads challenge) and they are all sci-fi, fantasy but lately all are gamelit/litrpg. Cannot recommend this high enough, if I could give it 6 stars I would, the entire series is fantastic. Oh, I am a long term KU subscriber and am loath to spend money on books with so much on KU that is very good, but if none of these came out on KU in the future I would still buy them on day 1 of release. Enough blathering, go buy/borrow them and read the series. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
