5.0 out of 5 stars A critical mandate . . . Highly recommended!
By THEMIA on September 8, 2020
Healthcare is currently one of the largest industries is the US, unfortunately it is also one of the sickest. Nicholas Webb’s latest book, The Healthcare Mandate, takes a close, bold, and courageous look at the systemic problems and challenges plaguing our healthcare system. One striking aspect of this book is its bridge-building and solution-oriented approach to addressing the major problems in healthcare. Its tone is apolitical and the book’s intent is not meant to be that of a crusading apologist going after profiteering industries; instead, it engages into offering new paradigms and practical yet powerful insights that have a great potential to be greatly impactful to a system in great need of change.

Among the book’s tenets is the idea of enabling patients to be active participants in the making and shaping of their health. This is made possible by shifting from a doctor-centered healthcare model to one that is patient-centered. This shift, labeled as the Big Shift, entails a redefining of the patient as a constituent, meaning moving away from the preconception that people are viewed as bearers of sickness (patients), instead of being constituents—people in charge of their well-being and health.

The book goes one step further by considering the constituent as a consumer. This is a rather bold proposition, because the actualization of such an idea will require a total revamp of the actual healthcare paradigm. The consumerization of healthcare as described by the author implies an enhanced patient experience that is smooth and frictionless—adjectives that are currently not even remotely associated with the current system.

The Healthcare Mandate is a highly recommended reading for anyone wanting a healthy respite from rhetorical and polemic discussions to address the major problems facing the healthcare industry. This book provides a refreshing view and describes a hopeful horizon for the future of healthcare.
