The only thing keeping me from giving this 5/5 stars is the build-up to the characters getting together. The characters were in "will they/ won't they" limbo for waaayyyy too long. I almost started to lose interest. I am all for building up the romantic tension, but keep it reasonable. They don't take a step until you are almost 60% through the book. I get it. Hawk is adverse to starting a relationship and Yaz wouldn't do anything until they had one, but good Lord help me out. But that is literally my only complaint. I loved the book.
As I read this I found I was judging Yasmine really harshly as I expected her character to be a bit stronger based upon how she was presented at the start of the novel. It seems I filter everything through my personal life experiences. I don’t like drunks, as my Mother had a male partner who drank and would be abusive to her while drunk. I hated that. So, her getting sloppy drunk and then Hawk’s brother being drunk all the time just triggered too many negative vibes for me to totally enjoy this one. The higher rating was given because of the suspense created by the possibility of someone stalking Hawk or maybe his psychopath ex wife somehow still finding a way to have him killed. Very neatly done.
