My Heart's Home (The Long Road Home Book 1) Kindle Edition
Chief Master Sergeant Cameron Freeland had a few job prospects but nothing that sparked much interest. And now… his flight was grounded, and he was stranded in an airport. At least, he could kill time in the USO.
A chance meeting there altered his decision, and he boarded his plane to Hope City with an interview for the job of his dreams.
Single mom, Mercy Cahill faced life and death struggles every day to protect herself and her daughter. Now hiding under a bridge in a homeless community, she needed was a break, a job, and a home somewhere her ex couldn't reach them.
Cam's new job as a special investigator took him to the cardboard cottages, where he met Destiny, the little girl with the big green eyes and her mother. Involving himself deeper with the mother and daughter was a mistake but leaving them in that place was impossible. If only Mercy would trust him, he'd give her shattered heart a home.

to help him get his dream job in Hope City.
When Cameron is working in Hope City he goes undercover as a homeless person to find a dangerous man. It is his experiences that draw you into this story. The way the author expresses this story is touching and enlightening. Cameron meets Mercy and her daughter Destiny and they teach him how to survive. Kris Michaels is able to make you feel the emotional journey that all three characters go on. There is a powerful connection between Cameron, Mercy and Destiny and with the author’s words this story just touched and grabbed my soul.
My Heart’s Home is a fantastic start for The Long Road Home series. Can’t wait to read the rest of the stories.
Ms. Michaels wrote a powerful, emotionally charged story about two homeless people and the "Cardboard Cottages" they live in. Homelessness is a sensitive subject and one that needs to be visited. Ms. Michaels did this well, she didn't preach about it or try to solve the problem, she simply told a story. A story that will open your eyes and remind you that every homeless person has a story and it's not always their fault. Mercy and Destiny's circumstances are a perfect example. In fact, being homeless saved their lives.
This story was gripping and had me tearing up a few times. It is a must-read and what a way to start a series with other authors. We learn a bit about the others in this story and I found myself wanted to know their stories as well. That is in my opinion is the sign of a wonderful story. This story will stay with me long after I have read it.
The strength and determination that Mercy shows is admirable. Regardless of what life has thrown at her she does all she can to protect and provide for her child. That spoke to me so much throughout this story. Good Moms are like your own personal superhero, and that’s exactly what Mercy was.
This story also shined a light on something I honestly know nothing about, made me rethink my view on homelessness. One of the things I love about Kris Michaels stories she shows me a world I never knew existed, changes my point of view on things I thought I knew, an overall incredible storyteller.
I wish I could give this more than five stars.

There are just a couple of editorial/grammatical errors.
The characterisation, as ever from Kris Michaels, is outstanding with both lead and supporting characters shining examples of how to draw a character.
The plotline is engaging, if a little slow to start as the book builds the strongest possible background for Cam and introducing the desperate conditions in Cardboard Cottages for Mercy and Destiny.
The descriptors used by Ms Michaels weave such a picture you can almost touch those shacks and tents.
The story of hope and redemption is inspiring and the love interest is so beautifully written.
There are a few sex scenes and a little swearing.
I have no problem recommending the book.
I found myself skipping pages, it felt a short book, the storyline was good but not as gritty as the author’s Guardians series.
The relationship was formed over a short space of time, and I felt the “I love you’s” were said far too quickly. I just really couldn’t connect with the characters which I usually do with this author.
For me, there was just something missing to really engage me, and to pull on my emotions.
